I got a chain of Aron to ten, then the eleventh one survived the first hit, and used Roar. Grr. Serves me right for using a variable-strength attack like Magnitude, I suppose, but it's still incredibly annoying. Better that it happens at ten than at thirty-nine, though. =)

I still marvel at you people that can chain in the weather. I'm just too much of a chicken to do it at this point.

Wanna know my secret technique? I call it persistance. I broke almost all of the rules but I don't care, and every time I needed sleep, I reset the clock to 7:00 am, got my ten hours and tried again. I did this for a weak.

To All The Eevee Hunters

Thanks for all the congrats guys. And if you're having trouble with Eevees just keep trying. I broke chain after chain at 15-18, got one into 34 and broke it, a few more in 20. Eevee is hard, but go in over prepared, expecting to fail, being way too cautious, and THAT will be the day you do it. Don't ever let yourself get too cocky cause that is always when something bad happens. Always has for me, in pokemon, FFXI, life, ya know. So just keep it up. Try and try again. That's all ya need!

Just finished another chain - today's swarm was Magnemite, so I thought I'd chain them with a Static Pokemon. After a few falst starts (including the failed Aron chain I mentioned above) I got them to 40, at 2957 steps.

I got three shinies, at 3151, 8602, and 11902 steps. At 19121 steps, bored of not seeing any more shinies, I decided to experiment with a slightly different type of patch, and got another normal Magnemite. At 19600, the repel wore off, and I forgot to re-apply. I honestly thought that would never happen to me - maybe I switched my brain off. I managed to walk all of a single step before running into a Pachirisu. Grr.

Oh well, three shinies ain't too bad. As for the seven-thousand step gap after my third shiny, it was only rarely that the patch behind my head would shake, and I'm reasonably certain none of them were shiny patches. Why does the character have such a big head?

They do that just to make it harder, either that or they hate us chaining =P

Just chained Grimers in the rain to eleven on Route 212. Mostly I want them for their Nuggets - I got two Nuggets, but the third one wouldn't let go. Silly Sticky Hold ability. Possibly I should toss a Pokeball instead. Mind you, I doubt I'll try chaining them again - chaining in the rain is just too tedious and frustrating. Grimer don't appear in the non-rainy part of Route 212, do they?

well, i'm going to go chain... the dreaded eevee... and a tip on not getting other pokemon when your cvhaining the pokemon backlot mentioned. NEVER, EVER, EVER go in non-sparkly grass when you are chaining the pokemon he mentions

life is good, i got a shiny geodude on a chain of 13!!!

first shiny at... chain of 13 and 756 steps!!!
also, i give thanks to eoko and belthazar for the fact to be ex-careful

the shiny patch was... not easy or hard to recognize. for me, it's just a double (quite solid) shake, a puse, and another double shake same as last time.

eh.. chain broke at 19

Congrats everyone on their shinies. =)

I haven't been having much luck lately. I've tried chaining Ralts at least 30 times now, but I haven't gotten a single chain to go past 20 (in fact, most won't even make it past 10.) I'm following all the rules and doing everything the exact same as I always do, so I can't figure out why this isn't working. Even when I'm positive the shake is the exact same and it has to be the furthest away, it still breaks. Very frustrating.

You know, I'm tempted to record myself chaining, then go back and study the spots where it broke to see if the shake really was different and I just somehow didn't notice it. It'd be interesting to find out...

lucario83, just curious, but why do you say never go into the non-sparkly grass? That's the type of grass I usually used for Eevee and it worked pretty well.

No shinies for me!

Man, I feel so left out! I never caught a shiny, or even seen one!

I have to get one of those USB Connectors so I can get a wi-fi connection in my house.. Or does anybody have an easier way to get a wi-fi connection? If so, do tell! It gets me angry when I hear about how people get a chain of 13, then see a shiny. I can't even get past a chain of 16...my friend sometimes jokes around with me, because I love to battle with her, and she said in order for her to battle me, I have to see a chain of 20...lol. Talk about TORTURE!! XD I just don't know a good place to chain..My goal is a shiny ponyta. Or Larvitar, but larvitar would be hard since it's difficult to see in the wild anyway. SO I guess ponyta would be my best bet. Eh, better get started!

Aww, 'tis nothing. Sometimes I have trouble following my own advice. =)

It's possibly a bit strong to say never go for the normal patches, but I prefer sparkly patches since they're easier to see. The main argument people give for using normal rather than sparkly patches is because it's easier to distinguish them from shiny patches, but I have no problem at all spotting a shiny patch from a sparkly patch.

Persistence is the key. Don't take any risks. When in doubt, reset. =)

If you've got a normal wireless router that doesn't use any stronger encryption than WEP, you can use that to connect to Wi-Fi. Otherwise, the USB Connector is your only option. Unless you want to go out to a hotspot - you can find a list of hotspots near you on the Nintendo Wi-Fi website, though I don't think that would be an "easier way". =)

It gets me angry when I hear about how people get a chain of 13, then see a shiny.
Heh, I feel the same way. Especially if I've just failed on a chain for the umpteenth time in a row. =)

Try Geodudes on Route 207 (though make sure there's no swarm there first). Even if you don't actually want the Geodude, it's still good for practice.

Well, my luck sort of picked up, but then it went downhill.

Managed to get my chain to 36, then I started resetting and found a shiny patch after only 2600 steps. Wow, pretty lucky, I thought! I was aiming to get a whole bunch of Ralts, so I continued resetting. Well, 27302 more steps and a very sore hand later - my finger slipped and I walked into the wrong patch, discovering a Shinx instead. *cries*

Oh well, at least I got one shiny out of it. He's a male modest-natured Ralts. I named him Periwinkle. =) I guess he'll just be extra special, then. No more Ralts chaining for me. xD

I've found myself drifting back to the non-sparkly patches. Not because it's tough to distinguish a true shiny patch from one of the sparkly patches - that's easy. For me, the sparkly patches just come in too many different forms. You know, the bright sparkly vs. the lighter sparkly, and then the speed and duration of the shake, etc. I like the long-shaking, non-sparkly patches as these are pretty hard to mistake, and give you a good long look so you can see them all. And I think you can basically get all of the pokemon on those types of grass. For example, I'm again trying to chain eevee, and got that going on the non-sparkly grass. I'm at 24 I think. I have my clock shifted by 12 hours so I can chain in daylight during the evening. One drawback is that on weekends if I chain during the "real" daylight hours, it's night in my game and I risk the wrath of the crickets. Also a bit harder to see the non-sparkly patches.

BTW, I actually almost missed a shiny patch the other day. I was chaining ponyta and when I reset I got 3 sparkly patches and one shiny. Trouble was, the shiny was on the edge and I only saw it with my peripheral vision. It also came after only about 4 resets from my last shiny, so wasn't really looking for one so soon. I was actually running to reset when I stopped and decided "hmmm... that the edge patch looked like a shiny!" and decided to go to it. I'd already caught 5 shinies I think off of the chain and so took the gamble, which paid off. If I hadn't had any shinies yet, I would not have taken the risk.

I've discovered it's easier to see the moving patches on Route 212 during the day, so maybe I'll try chaining Grimer again. If I can ever stop running into Bibarel (though the effect of the rain kind of puts a drain on the DS's resources). I'd rather not go messing with my system time.

This is the reason I usually go for the non-sparkly patches as well, and perhaps part of the reason my Ralts chains kept breaking so easily (I might have been mixing up the different types of sprakly grass.) However, the only Pokemon I've never been able to find in non-sparkly patches are the rare Pokeradar only Pokemon, such as Mareep or Ralts. I've never seen one appear in non-sparkly grass... ever. I suppose I could just be very unlucky though.
