I don't often visit bulbagarden, and I don't think I've ever been on the forums before, but I signed up to answer this question. I'm certainly no chaining pro, my best is 39 and I've seen chains close to 200. The normal rate of appearance for shinies is 1/8192, but when you're chaining the chances increase over time. By how much you might ask, well that's not a very difficult formula. The chance of finding a shiny when using the pokeradar is 1/(8200-200x) where x is the current chain. When you use the pokeradar the first time, you start at 1/8200, slightly higher than normal, but at that point you don't have a chain yet. After that it's only getting better. The reason people stop at 40 is because at that point the chances have gotten as good as they're going to get: 1/200. If you count the 4 patches and do a little calculation that's a 1.985% chance of finding a shiny (much much better than .0001220% chance in a normal random encounter). So, as I've been advised but have not yet been able to practice, when you get to 40 stop looking for favorable patch arrangements and begin resetting the radar for shiny patches. I've been lucky and gotten a caterpie on a chain of 8 and a ralts on a chain of 32, and I bow to those who have gotten to 40, you guys must be really good. Good luck every body, and if you have any questions, ask and I'll do my best.I always wonder why does some people refuses to stop chaining after they reach 40 on the chain. Something I dont know about?
If this has already been explained in this thread, I'm sorry. I haven't read that much of it.
