Review SM042: Alola at Kanto! Takeshi and Kasumi!!

Great episode, so much nostalgia. One of the few cases where I feel like writing a review.

Lots of nice moments:
>Kiawe being afraid of the plane
>Brock interacting with a Vulpix again, even though it's now Lillie's Alolan one.
>Ash running to Brock and Brock seemingly doing the same... only to hit on the lady. Great as always :p And that's how Misty comes in...
>Misty's more cheery and less grumpy than OS
>The sequence in which Misty and Brock introduce themselves is awesome. And Misty's like "I'm the greatest beauty", then look at Lana's face :D
>The two Oaks reunite, Rotom be like :O
>Lillie getting excited with the Spearow, only for Mallow to tell her they're in Alola too
>Ash VS 30 Tauros :p
>Kiawe riding the Rapidash reminded me of that Safari zone race episode
>Kanto Ninetales and Alolan Vulpix, particularly cute as Vulpix isn't afraid of a Fire-type
>SQUIRTLE SQUAD AT OAK'S PLACE! Wish Ash's Squirtle had some time with him, though...
>Poor Kantonian Exeggutor :(
>Ash's Muk going for the hug; no one comments on the stench though, oh well can't have everything
>KIAWE PUTTING THE WIG ON DUGTRIO. So many cool Kiawe reactions this ep
>Togedemaru does its thing again, the whole thing with Pikachu and the 2 Marowak was cool
>The alone time Ash had with Misty and Brock, as well as their chat, was so nostalgic
>Ash's Bulbasaur, of course this one had to appear. It got a Hoenn episode to it, appeared in the last episode of BW too; it's probably the one of Ash's Pokemon they show most when he visits Oak anyway
>Misty running on the sight of Gyarados, Lana staying; so not expecting that from Misty, she was supposedly past her Gyarados fear
>Misty/Lana interactions are nice. I kinda wish Lana is the one who'll be using Z-Moves against Misty's Mega Gyarados next ep, but it will probably be Ash...
>Brock's afraid of Onix too? :( I like how Kiawe kept his cool and even tried to battle it with Turtonator, though
>More Lycanroc. I would normally not like it being thrown in every episode, but at least Misty/Brock get to see it this way
>Brock's Crobat, nice. Misty's Staryu, meh wish she'd use something else.
>SERIOUSLY, BEWEAR?! This is getting more and more amusing to watch :p Misty's line afterwards is cool, a nice twist to the usual "Ya na kanji"
>And Jigglypuff appears again! :D I've missed you so long, it's been since AG!
>Delia and Mimey, Delia/Litten interactions, Bulbasaur/Rowlet interactions
>And Mew. Whenever someone (in this case Rotom) is talking about not seeing Mew, Mew is ALWAYS there and ready to leave argh -_-
>Although there's an implication there that Rotom somehow scanned the legendary birds and Mewtwo?!
>Cerulean Gym looks cool. Ash is a bit too pumped to have a Gym Battle though... as if he doesn't have the Badge. But I guess this time he could actually earn it by winning a battle, unlike EP007.

Overall, of course the episode lacked a few things and some points were rushed, you can't fit in everything. But it gets a solid 9.5/10
Wish we'd get more than 2 episodes of this :D

Question, I haven't watched the episode yet and am wondering if the episode will be interesting to me if I don't feel any nostalgia for Misty, Brock, or Ash's old Pokemon or if I should just skip it?

The episode is already average at best with nostalgia imo so if you don't have the nostalgia factor then you should probably skip it.
Others may disagree with me so yeh

I really enjoyed the OS gang taking on Team Rocket. One of my complaints with OS is that we didn't get to see Misty or Brock's Pokemon in action enough, so it was nice to see them get to battle, and Misty even got the finishing blow. I thought they overkilled the speedlines in that scene, but I guess that makes sense as a throwback. Bonus points for Ash turning his cap around.

Squritle is back at Pro.oak lab

Why was Room upset about the completing the cant region Pokemon he haven't seen all pokemn yet their some trio legendary birds

Rotom Pokedex scanned all the Kanto Pokemon, even Mewtwo and Legendary Bird Trio, but it didn't catch a Mew. Mew is a rare Pokemon to encounter, that's why it couldn't see it nor scan it. Also, this was Mew's first physical anime debut in the main series besides those dream or fantasy appearances. Rotom Pokedex was able to show an entry for Rapidash despite the fact it doesn't have any info for the rest of Pokemon that aren't in Alolan in the game.

how rotomdex gets mew two and trio birds while they dont live in the in oak lab they very very rare to find them that easily

I loved everything about this episode.

Ahhh how I just want Brock and Misty to come back permenantly now!
I loved seeing Staryu and Crobat again, and a few of Ash's old Pokemon (I feel like we would've seen more of his old mons if he went back to Kanto alone for a trip).

Deep down I'm hoping them showing off current Alola forms like that against their Kanto counterparts in these new eps, means we'll get more in USUM aha.

Bewear jumping out of the plane to come and get Team Rocket was probably the highlight for me.

In all 9/10, only cause we didn't get to see more of Ash's older Pokemon, even for a few static shots lol.

Rotom travelled throughout Kanto to fill the Dex, he didn't just find everything in the lab. The mew thing makes me wonder a lot though.
Overall, great episode. They should have made an entire Kanto Month, was way too rushed, but it had its moments. Bewear dropping out of the plane though, holy crap. Best running gag in ages. And bulbasaur basically going FTS at Mimikyu was top dollar, that thing is way too spoopy.

how did he found mewtwo

mew might have episode it will be the first for the anime

I dont get why didn't we see all of ash Pokemon

we seen some of pokemon

This episode reminded me why i enjoyed in Misty and Brock characters so much finding they complimented Ash and themselves in genuine and lively way.
Misty quickly finding common language with Lana searching for Popplio exuding with lot of personality and being her old self with new charming traits being added to supplement her characterization.
Brock having fun little interactions with Lillie bringing that balance to vortex of personalities with his mature and wise nature revealing he is doing good in his career of becoming doctor.

Iconic and lovable classic pokemon like Muk, Squirtle, Tauros or even Jigglypuff making appearance. Witnessing to clash of new and classic characters lot of us grew up with was delight to eyes.

Enjoying in this nice reunion which was more than just nostalgia. Since this episode had spirit and soul of past times bonding nicely with modern age of pokemon anime. Bringing revolution to stale and overused status quo of pokemon anime, shake up it was needed to be done for people faith in pokemon anime and those working behind it being restored. Knowing things can change and be done better.

Im really looking forward to next episode and how will battles end up(Gyarados better win or at least tie with Ash Pikachu, not wanting repeat of how Clair, Wake or Lysandre Gyarados ended up). Not with mega evolved Gyarados with Misty deserving victory more than Ash given that this may be last time we see her again.

Especially now that Misty shocked all of us with humongous and renovated Cerulean gym adding new life to it and her pokemon like Staryu showing to be stronger and more prepared than ever before. And proving from preview with how Pikachu electric attacks were neutralized that water specialist like her can and did developed counter measures to water specie weakness. Giving her pokemon way and chance to defeat pokemon who have type advantage. Something some people used to doubt before.

My only complaint: It was rushed with writers putting too many stuff in episode of 20 to 22 minutes.

For so many pokemon and characters that just wasn't enough to give someone like Brock and Misty who we haven't seen forever deserved and proper focus. Their 10 minutes of glory for satisfying update and giving them more development(why not; just because they're older characters that does not mean they should stop developing having untapped potential).

Maybe and hopefully this Kanto mini arc wont be last we see from Misty and Brock. And if people receive this episodes well polluting high ratings and interest. It may persuade writers and directors board to reconsider putting Misty and Brock back in pokemon series having influence on its future and story in some capacity, On at least semi recurring way.:)

I can see why people are bugged by the existence of Squirtle in the lab, but the episode is meant to deliver nostalgia rather than having sensable plot to the storyline. So many things at once that won't make sense occured, such as returning of Jigglypuff although she was left behind in Hoenn, or Rotom taking information of all the Kanto Pokémon except for the Mew (I get the reference, but it looks like Oak has Mewtwo, Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres in his laboratory, too), and many flows. Judging the episode by logical means would not take anyone anywhere. You gotta judge by how the nostalgia felt for old fans, that's all.

This anime doesn't make any sense anyway, if you have a Bewear running over water and jumping from a plane then Jigglypuff appearing out of nowhere, the Squirtle Squad being here and Rotom apparently having registered the birds and Mewtwo aren't that weird. And yeah, it was all played for nostalgia in this episode anyway, and they pushed aside all logic for it.

But if I had to give an explanation for Rotom seemingly having registered the Legendary Birds and Mewtwo, maybe it went inside the lab and found research files of Oak, detailing these four based on other people's experiences. Or something along those lines. In the games you can sometimes get Pokédex registrations for rare Pokémon by reading books or looking at pictures, so yeah.

A 22 minute episode featuring every single Pokemon Ash has ever had would mean no single human interaction.

Well, I surely wouldn't have expected to see all of Ash's Pokémon, mind you. Even I admit that doing so would have been next to impossible.

However, since these episodes are about Kanto, then why not show at least the Kanto Pokémon, even if they had a non-speaking cameo? Why not have a brief aerial race between the two Charizards, for example? Or having Popplio, Squirtle and Kingler partaking to some sort of bubble competition? Or Snorlax simply sleeping on the background?

Basically, little moments and shenanigans which could have produced some interactions between the humans and their Pokémon with Ash's Pokémon. I feel that would have been a bit more meaningful, while also providing some more nostalgia fuel.
