The secret to Rowlet: it also swallowed an Exp. Share offscreen

fitting because it'd lend even more to the feel that it's kind of unintentionally a cheater. (still don't understand how a decoy lets you escape a move you're already trapped in...) Then again, it's not Rowlet's fault that anime Z-Moves are way too easy to avoid and way too inconsistent with how effective they are.

(I have nothing against Exp. Share in the game, but they would definitely come off as cheating in the anime-verse)

Well for one thing, the VA list for the next episode (Torracat vs Incineroar) shows Tapu Koko, so I can't imagine why it would be in the list, if it wasn't heavily implied that Tapu Koko isn't Kukui's 6th Pokemon or the 6th Pokemon he uses, not necessarily his own Pokemon, though if that's the case, it would be a shame to not see his actual 6th Pokemon.

Agreed, it would be a wasted opportunity not see who his full team are

I'm really looking forward to seeing Empoleon in the anime again

Plus, it's Japan. A lot of stuff they do on television (and in general) can seem cringy to us westerners.
It's not that... they could act normally and talk about the stuff without going out of their way to overact and do cringey exaggerated reactions, especially those clowns at Oha Suta.
