So does this mean Iris and Dento have no goals?

It had nothing todo with his appearance, he is a waiter.
And you can probobly find this information on Pokébeach if you go a few pages back. Actually someone posted the translation here on a different thread

I thought his appearance was one of the main reason so many people could see him doing Musicals, not being a waiter. I'm also confused as to why people a waiter makes you think that he has a good chance of doing Musicals. I've also looked through Serebii and Pokebeach and I did not find anything in the recent scans of Coro Coro that says Dento enjoys watching Musicals. They only mentioned that he is the first Gym Leader and you need to answer questions about Pokemon type compatibility in order to challenge him.

First off, I didn't mean that being a waiter meant he was likely to do contests. I meant he was dressed formally because he is a waiter.
Secondly, It was posted on Pokébeach a while ago when we first ever heard of Dento. I know about it because when traslated off the crocro scan there was an odd translation that said that 'Dento cocked Aloe' and if you check in one of the threads here--> http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/forumdisplay.php?f=392 you should find it.

Dento can easily do musicals/contest, he's even appropriately dressed for it. xD

More like Dento is more appropriately dressed to serve wine and bread with cheese. Oh, and give you an ass-whooping with his incongruous OTHER job as a gym leader.

Maybe the reason why he needs two jobs is so he can have enough money to pursue Pokemusicals?

I'll be okay if they never give them goals. After two series of main characters doing something (May and Dawn), it'll be a fun experiment seeing what they can pull off with these new characters.

And by goals I mean visible ones that we see them accomplish. I'm sure Dento and Iris will be given dreams and long-term goals of their own to pine over. More like Brock, Misty, or Tracey in those regards.

Ah, that makes more sense regarding Dento dressing formally. I've checked Pokebeach, twice, Serebii, and two threads on the Black and White section, specifically the threads on Gym Leaders/League and Pokemon Musicals since I thought the quote would most likely be in one of them, and searched for Dento. I didn't find any quote from Coro Coro like the one you mentioned. I also didn't find any quote/translation like Dento cocked Aloe anywhere. If that statement of Dento enjoying Musicals was true, or that Coro Coro implied it, I think that it would have been posted with the rest of information from August's issue of Coro Coro.

I still don't think that it's likely for Dento to do Musicals since I still think that they would use a female character, in the main cast at least, to promote a form of battle that targets the female demographic. Plus, I really would prefer seeing Iris having some kind of battle oriented goal since I already like her and want to see how she grows in the new series. I find it highly unlikely for Iris to do Gym battles. Having two trainers in the main group going for the Isshu League just wouldn't work for a number of reasons. If it turns out he does Musicals, I wouldn't be upset. It would make Dento more active in the group. Even if they don't have any kind of battle-driven quest like with Gyms and Contests, I hope that they'll both be likable and interesting characters.

No.
By shorter saga they probably mean less fillers.
Also DP seemed to be longer because of Dawn's losing streak.

Wrong. If Iris and Dento gets nothing to do, we will have even more fillers of seeing them get more pokemon and end up doing nothing with them.

I think most people have it all wrong here and that they are jumping to conclusions based on minor details.

First, Dento is a sommelier, which is a bit more than just an average waiter. He's an expert in horticulture (wine) and specializes in pairing certain foods with certain wines (or other liquours) based on the patron's tastes/budget. This explains his preference for the Grass type and why he is dressed so formally. How this translates to broadway star wannabe for some people, I have no idea. If anything, I imagine Dento tagging along with Ash to discover the culture of the rest of Ishuu. Also, he's described as being great at discerning the relationship between trainers and pokemon. This correlates well with his job as a sommelier, testing the combinations of fine foods and wine. I see him as an observer, more so testing the trainers they meet, and finding what new combinations exist in the world.

Now we have Iris, described as a 'wild girl' who happens to own a Kibaggo (likely this generation's base form to a dragon-pseudo-legend like Dratini/Dragonite). Why is such a young girl out on her own carrying around such a potentially strong pokemon with her? Furthermore, she doesn't keep it in a ball either. This could mean she just prefers to walk with it, or maybe she doesn't consider herself as its 'master' and rather just a close friend. I think there's a lot more to Iris than meets the eye, and she'll have much more of a part to play with the overall plot rather than just being another trainer or coordinator.

I'm ambivalent towards whether they should have goals. On one hand, it's really been enjoyable seeing two characters have a goal in AG and DP. Dawn and May really evolved and advanced thanks to having a goal. On the other hand, I'm not sure how well the writers would be able to handle three characters with their own goals and arcs.

I do think it's possible for them to be generally interesting and fun characters without goals like Ash's, assuming the writers take time to develop and focus on them.

The one thing I do hope is that Dento be a truly fabulous character.

He's a Pokemon Sommelier. That means he knows about the compatibility between a trainer and his Pokemon. Food and wine have nothing to do with it.

I'm sure they will get goals as we get more information. Its still too early to speculate right now.

I can picture them reverting to Kanto/Johto with Ash being the only one with the goal, as Black White/Best Wishes is supposedly a revamp of the franchise. If Black White does indeed have no sidequest, then this will be likely the case. Didn't Sapphire Ruby and Diamond Pearl already revealed their side quests leading up to their release by around this time in relative to Blackwhite's release?

I agree. Iris might be traveling with the group with a mysterious goal or purpose that they will slowly reveal as part of the plot.

Since he's a pokemon sommelier, it might have been cool if Dento'd been representative of the series fanbase.
You know.
Specialising in pokemon whine.

In all seriousness, I wouldn't be bothered if either of them didn’t have an active goal, at least, in the same calibre as the two coordinators, since all I ask for is that they are entertaining. Goals are all well and good in a show focused around a fictional sport (ha-cha!), but it can mean little when you're unable to appreciate the character striving towards it.
That said, I wouldn't want them to just be there for moral support or have some half-assed explanation for hanging around. Shake things up this time and have their reason-for-being relevant to an ongoing story that runs throughout the series, I say. Have at least Iris and Dento’s stories intertwine with each other for the sake of a common goal.

I don't think Dento will have a goal, I think he just wants to travel around Isshu and chooses to go with Ash since he beat him at his gym (I'm sure he did.) And if Ash did lose to Dento, maybe Dento could travel around with him and help him train so they could have a rematch and then Dento could give him the badge.

As for Iris, I really don't see her doing musicals but who knows, they've had plenty of surprises before. I'd like it if her goal was to be a Pokemon Ranger, it'd be different.

I'm certain Dento'll chase after Musicals. Jessie just might follow.

Iris...I can't say. They haven't even given her a real personality yet, let alone a reason to follow Ash (Then again, May didn't have a reason at first either. She didn't even like Pokémon.)
