I was watching Episode 0 of the latest Lupin III anime (It's a tribute episode to one of the voice actors retiring, hence the 0). At one point, two characters get into an argument with one another shown via split screen and Lupin tries break it quite literally by pushing away the two screens. You know what my first thought was? "This is a visual gag I would expect from Pokemon."
Since the very beginning, the Pokemon anime has used split screens and close up insert shots to make the presentation more interesting and get reactions from characters. Now, Pokemon is far from the only anime to use these techniques but for some reason, this is the first one I think of when it comes to this style. On the same token, they have also used them for comedic purposes with characters pushing away the bars or getting squished by their "boxes" becoming smaller, one step away from breaking the fourth wall with this medium awareness.
What is your favorite use of split screens in the anime?
