ello ello hola! ciao and bonjour! guess what this is??!! it's lovelykissshipping!!
aka, this is a cute and fluffy (it's SUPPOSED to be cute and fluffy..) whitney x lacey fic! slow-burn romance starring the pink-haired cuties becoming kinda-sorta girlfriends. that's it. because i love whitney and lacey and lovelykiss so i really felt the need to write them sometime.
so here it is. whitney/lacey/lovelykiss :) the premise is that the bb gang goes to johto on a field trip and lacey is the only one not looking forward to it... but by the end, she's the only one not yet willing to leave. now featuring the rare and elusive Happy Ending In Sena's Works!!!

ummm in terms of warnings
there's romance stuff (handholding, playing with each other's hair, general light physical affection) and lacey grapples with some anxiety and self-esteem issues but it never gets very heavy and she works through it all with love and support!!
(also, it only crops up like three times, but "ume" is carmine and kieran's surname in my hc! just to avoid confusion)

i hope you enjoy!! <33

"Are we there yet?"

Thus was the tone of the entire Academy-sanctioned trip to Johto. Apparently, Director Cyrano thought that inviting a transfer student from Paldea wasn't enough of a cultural breath of fresh air for his students, and arranged for the BB League's members to take a journey halfway across the globe for one month as they did a bit of sightseeing and, more importantly, challenged the Johto Pokémon League's members. And of course, the whole trip was to be directly supervised by the eccentric man himself.

No, Lacey didn't think it made much sense either. The headmaster leaving most of his students behind as he took the school's best battlers (a group that was already sometimes criticized for receiving preferential treatment) for a whole month?

It's just not right!

But she had no choice. When the group was told the news, she seemed to be the only one who showed any trepidation. Crispin and the Ume siblings were practically bursting at the seams, Drayton offered up a passive yawn and a few mumbles that seemed to translate to "Sounds like fun," and Amarys and Juliana nodded along in typical Amarys-and-Juliana fashion.

Lacey wanted to say something. Typically, she's not afraid to say what's on her mind. She might be introverted, and sometimes a bit delicate, but she can be very assertive when she wants to be! And she definitely wanted to be assertive now.

But when she folded her arms and tried to speak, she couldn't find the words she wanted to say.

So among Crispin's whooping and Carmine's manic shouting as she gripped Amarys's shoulders and Drayton about to fall asleep again and Kieran and Juliana whispering something or another to each other, Lacey resigned herself to how alone she was in this situation. She let her hands fall back in her lap, interlaced her fingers, and smiled. It didn't reach her eyes, but everyone else seemed too excited or unconscious to notice.

That's just alright. Sometimes the popular opinion is the correct one. Lacey is no stranger to the mainstream in the first place. Come the end of June, she will go with the flow and have fun with her friends in a lovely new region. Not that many students attended the summer classes anyway, right? So it would probably work out. Even if Director Cyrano admitted he didn't have a replacement and had no clue where to find one. It'd be fine. The teachers would be fine, they're very intelligent, they can handle themselves. And of course the Academy's best battlers would be the ones who got the most out of a trip centered around battling! Lacey was simply overreacting, as always.

It's alright. She's alright.

Right now, Lacey was all wrong, or perhaps she was right last month. Today was June 28, and the Blueberry League heads were on a plane.

Rather, the miserable Blueberry League heads were on a plane.

Lacey squeezed her eyes shut as tightly as she could bear, trying to distract herself from the maddening sensation of Crispin accidentally kicking the back of her seat over and over like some deranged drumbeat as he swung his legs. He was a fidgety person. It wasn't his fault, Lacey couldn't possibly blame him. Oh, getting mad at him was probably immature of her, wasn't it...?

Well, to be fair, she wasn't the one asking every five minutes, like clockwork, whether or not the group had arrived at their destination of Saffron City. The answer always was a resounding "No," of course, because Saffron City was not at all close to Mistralton City, and he had been asking that overandoverandover ever since the takeoff.

She looked around. The setting was as dismal as ever. Behind her, she knew Crispin was there (because she could still feel him kick!), and Drayton was to his left (because she could hear him snore!). On the opposite side of the aisle, to Lacey's right, was Carmine sitting by herself (upon her own request), playing some kind of mobile game. Behind Carmine were Kieran and Juliana and- were they playing with each other's hair?

That was really, really cute. Lacey felt her face burn. Her friends looked so happy with one another; at peace, even. Adorable.

But as her gaze fixed upon Kieran, blushing as Juliana wove a tiny braid into his shaggy locks, she realized that the pink coating her cheeks had a much different meaning. Because she understood that the tears welling in her eyes weren't happy ones.

Yet being jealous is just not right.

Selfishly, greedily, enviously, Lacey had to look away. She hung her head, stared at her hands in her lap, and tried not to cry.

"Fascinating."

Lacey flinched. Was she being watched?

She was not, as it turned out. For to her left sat Amarys, wearing an amused expression and fixated on an article in the complementary flight magazine that detailed several cities and establishments throughout Johto.

Desperate for some alleviation from her beleaguering emotions, Lacey peered at the subject of her friend's attention. Amarys was probably looking at something particularly interesting if she showed as strong of a response as nearly smiling!

"What, what is it...?"

The Steel-type specialist pointed a perfectly lacquered nail at a photograph of... was that a ranch? Expansive and placid, the picture depicted a herd of Miltank cheerfully frolicking among the vivid greenery, the rising sun perfectly framed in the background.

It was really, really, really cute. And really pretty.

Lacey was pulled out of her momentary fantasy by Amarys's voice. "This is the Paniola Ranch, a facility located in the Alola region."

"It's really cute." Curse you, Lacey!

"Perhaps." Amarys furrowed her brow, pushing her glasses further up the bridge of her nose. "However, I have an inquiry for the author of this article." She delicately flipped the page. "I would like to ask this person-" she flipped again- "-why a photograph of a location in a region with seemingly no association with Johto-" yet again- "-is featured so prominently in a-"

Lacey held up her hands, eyes wide. "Wait, wait!" Amarys glared at her friend sternly. Ugh. That's what you get for interrupting her... "Could you... flip back? To that picture? Pretty please?"

The stoic girl let out a small huff and did as was requested - sort of. Yes, the Miltank were very cute, but what really caught Lacey's attention was the image only one page behind Amarys's impromptu stopping point.

"Um... two pages forward, if you can?" Amarys raised an eyebrow before redirecting her focus to the task at hand, turning precisely two pages with a single flick of the wrist.

There it was. On the glossy pages of the magazine was a full-body portrait of a beautiful girl who appeared to be around Lacey's age. Clad in what looked like a heavily modified softball uniform, the pink-haired young woman was grinning as she waved at the camera, her eyes bright and warm and expression unapologetically gleeful. The caption below read "Whitney Tanpopo, the Gym Leader of Goldenrod City, first met her partner Miltank at Paniola Ranch."

So, her name was Whitney Tanpopo (meaning "dandelion" -- how cute!), and she was a Gym Leader.

A ridiculously attractive Gym Leader, to boot.

"Lacey."

She flinched again as Amarys lightly tapped her shoulder. "You have been wordlessly gazing upon this image for precisely three minutes. What is the matter?"

Lacey's blood rushed to her face as she realized just how long she had been looking at that picture of Whitney. "I'm- um- I'm okay. Thank you for your consideration... No, I mean, thank you for the... U-Um, thank you. For caring."

Albeit still slightly befuddled, Amarys gave a semi-understanding nod, closing the magazine. It was not the first time she had witnessed her friend go starry-eyed over a woman she'd never met, and it likely would not be the last.

Behind the still-blushing girl, Crispin released a comically exaggerated sigh. "Are we theeeeeeere yet?!"

No, they were not there yet. But now Lacey couldn't wait either.

I think this is maybe the second time I've properly read your writing, come to think of it? I'm okay with crackfic-style writing at times (like the contest fic you did), but I think I can safely say that the 'feel' of this work is a bit more my speed! Lacey is cute as always, she is my second adopted dotter .. and even though I have only watched a playthrough of the SV DLC, I'd like to say that you've captured her pretty well in terms of character.

I think using third-person limited for this fic was a nice decision on your part... you're able to mix in Lacey's feelings and internal monologue nicely but still leave the option for vivid (unbiased) immersion into the setting and such, too. Maybe I just really like hearing her talkLOL...

Comments below so as to not take up too much space!

I like your lack of breaks in the sentence here! It really brings home the vibe that the current situation is a bit too much for Lacey to handle :enzap:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you might want 'would' there instead of 'will'? (and 'was' instead of is, etc?) These two sentences seem to have been written in present-tense instead of past-tense like the rest of the fic, I think! But I might be missing something.

she's just like me for real.............

Poor girl LOL... we've all been there at some point probably T__T

she deserves hugs i hope she can get to hug a miltank soon ..

It was really, really, really cute. And really pretty.
somehow I feel like this might not be talking about the photo of the ranch, though I might be wrong?

Tanpopo!!!! Cute name..

HEKDJSSUHJ YEAH....? i lov her for that LOL, she is so soooo silly..

Hmm, I'm excited to see more, too! I think this is the first time I've actually caught a chapter fic at the start, so this'll be a fun thing for me!! Your writing is really easy to read, if that makes sense -- it feels nice and natural in this context, at least to me, and that's a good thing. Great job, great start, and hopefully we'll see more soon! (it helps this has one of my fav characters as well ehehe..)
