In-game, I don't think the professors have *given* names, do they? Hmm, concievibly, say Special or somewhere wanted to give Ookido a given name, could they call him something other than Yukinari?

In game, we wouldn't be able to tell whether those were given or family names - they seem to have only one name.

Wouldn't 'Mr. Briney' technically be a surname? You wouldn't normally tack on a 'Mr.' if it was his first name, no matter how old he is.

I love how they give people first names but no last names or they give them last names but no first names. XD TF, please. TF. XD

I guess since it's their fantasy world, they have no problems, because they can just give everyone a different name

I got a random SMS from South Africa a couple of weeks ago (I live in Australia) asking me what Misty's last name was, because my friends were fighting about it XD

If there were surnames (in the gameverse itself or any adaptation) would'nt it make sense if the surnames were matriarchal. Since most Pokemon end up becoming their mother's species.

Well, to answer the question posted by the OP back then, I personally like to believe that characters in the anime do have surnames, just that the writers never bring them up, since they are not really necessary. After all, I would just tell my first name to some stranger I meet (which is basically what happens in most of the anime episodes), instead of chanting my entire name.
