Terra Nova
Skip to below the divider if you don't care about backstories.

The world is a scary place: monsters roam free, technology's slowing advancement has not brought unification, and the untamed lands of the world are hostile and uncharted. This place, called Terra Nova, is where many tiny communities and budding civilizations live out their daily lives, hoping to thrive in this unforgiving landscape.

One such place is Termina, the city of beginnings. Known far and wide as a place of opportunity and hope, many made pilgrimage to its borders from other places in the hopes of perhaps establishing it as the bedrock of a more unified Terra Nova. Yes, it stands as a beacon.

Or rather, stood.

Following its sudden destruction, people found themselves evacuating. Many lives were lost, and even more were uprooted. Now, those who were in the city find themselves trying their hardest to find other places, scattered once more into the land, and that bastion is now gone.

--------

Hello there. Welcome to Terra Nova, a non-Pokemon RP.

The premise is rather simple - you play a character in the setting which is following the events of a catastrophe in one of the major locations. The goal, at the beginning, is introducing them to a new place for the story to take root: this place being a thought to be abandoned town known as Eden. Naturally, the truth is far more complex.

As for your character, you are free to have them come from whatever walk of life you so choose, at least within reason. So long as it doesn't break any rules, you can be reasonably assured that it's fine.

Note: The world's aesthetic is like untapped wilderness with pockets of civilization, and functions like a post-apocalypse.

Before you ask - yes, this has some basis in Fallout. No, this isn't Fallout.

All general Roleplaying Section rules apply.

No godmodding, powerplaying, etc.

No playing as super powerful beings that come from somewhere far away. Everybody should be a native of Terra Nova, at least for the beginning.

Disallowed magic -- invincibility of any kind, spacetime, power copying/granting/negation, conjuration.

This will be hosted on Discord. If you don't want to get one or don't want to do that, then I'm sorry but this RP won't be for you.

Skills
Extremely good shot, very good at long range combat. Gets to know their surroundings rather easily when allowed to do so. Suffers physically without their armor. No magical aptitude.

Other: Constantly perched up high in Eden, looking over the town. Is actually really personable and open to bribes of sweets. The edgy look is completely intentional. Wants to learn how to modify firearms, primarily only worked Good at shooting, not great at archery.

Foundation information on the world.
Pretty much all of this is optional to read, and it's all pretty open-ended enough to let the players expand on it if they so please. Still, give it a read if you're bored or want to know stuff.

Kinda important topics
This is, for better or worse, a fantasy world with guns and technology in it.

Said technology ranges from rather primitive to somewhat futuristic, but the latter is in no way pervasive.

There's no magic that makes you immune to technology, and there's no technology that completely negates magic.

The world is big, and its fleshed out by everyone. The only thing this world probably lacks are gods and technological singularities.

Entirely optional information
Every faction is open to fleshing out, and this list is not exhaustive. This just happens to be a short list of known coalitions and bodies.

The Brotherhood Tribunal: A group of militants who use magic and technology in tandem to judge the lawless lands of Terra Nova in an attempt to "uphold the peace", capturing or executing those considered to be criminals and attempting to establish order. Following the nuking of Termina, the chapter here find themselves scrambling to find their footing as their leaders were caught in the blast.

The Triadi: A coalition of magical learners that very loosely affiliate with one another in Terra Nova, distrusted by most and hunted by some. Individually, they are as different as night and day in most regards, and fight more often than they agree. Following the destruction of Termina, their one place of accepted neutral ground is gone.

Raiders and gangs: Your archetypal hoodlums, thieves, and other such individuals who make it a point to do things for themselves. They takThey e advantage of the lawlessness of Terra Nova's wildlands, and work in many different ways. There are many tiny raider groups and gangs, but some of the biggest operate in different parts of the wild.

This is just a list of things about the communities and their relations. Really easy to follow.
  • There are a lot of communities that exist, but most of them are divided by large swaths of (potentially dangerous) land.
  • Their tech tends to be either rather primitive or not at all as advanced as the modern day. Exceptions exist.
  • Many tend to either not know about one another or are actively in conflict with each other. Trade does exist, naturally.
  • Their governance obviously varies.
  • Some might be okay with magic, some might not be. It all depends.

To put it simply, the "monsters" are just megafauna that exist. Without going into detail, they're distinct from normal animals you would see by basically being stronger, usually bigger, and overall the most deadly thing you'll find. They make the setting pretty dangerous, since they're the apex predators.

Yes, regular creatures exist here. Yes, you can eat some of the monsters. Yes, you can tame some of the monsters.

No, the monsters probably don't have magic. No, they probably can't use technology like we can.

There's no bestiary here; we'll get creative during play.

Magic could probably get complicated, so this is just some tidbits on it.
  • Gods don't exist. Godlike magic users have and most likely do exist.
  • Can be a ritual or as simple as "wave your hand and shoot fireball".
  • Some smaller bits of technology can use ambient energy as a power source.
  • Nothing can just bestow magical power, because every human has the potential to use it. It's just really hard to use even with the natural talent.
One big thing is that, in-universe, technically the energy used by magic is just called "energy"; the act of using it for a specific purpose is called "magic". People use it interchangeably, don't sweat it.

Beyond that, technology only has some limitations that basically fit with the setting.
  • No star trek level things are anywhere. Rather high tech does exist, it's rare.
  • No massive networks of transportation exists as of yet.

Name: Talia Grace (Last name is a placeholder for now unless I can't find anything better)
Age: 24

Appearance:
what-colour-makeup-suits-you-724115_w600h600.jpg

Skills: She is versed in magic, but not well versed in all of it. Her natural talent of being able to absorb book information made it easy for her to learn magic as a child, but by no means is she a master. Her favorite types of spells are more along the elemental side such as electricity. Has a weaker immune system, so she tends to become ill more frequently. In turn, this disrupts her stamina and energy levels for magic use. Only good with magic.

Other: She has a snow lynx, spotted Bengal cat named Atticus. She can cook, but doesn't enjoy it. What she does love to cook though is bacon as she gives it different preparations, uses it in unique ways in dishes, and flavors it with unusual flavors. Singing is her favorite thing to do when she's alone as she is self-conscious of her voice. She loves compliments due to her low self-esteem.

Name: Blake Ventus
Age:
24

Appearance:
maxresdefault.jpg

Skills:

Blake doesn't realize that he's a magic user. He's always believed that his ability to slip into the shadows, to stalk prey across the wilderness was solely due to skill and practice. But unfortunately for his ego (if / when he finds out), he is in fact subconciously using a light form of magic to camouflage himself in the shadows. If he were ever to train, he would be a proficient user of shadow magic to further his stealth capabilities.

Outside of his magic, Blake is a wanderer, a man with no ties to any town or faction. As such, he's become skilled at surviving in a harsh world. He is handy with a bow, using the older weapon for silence. And while his goal is to avoid battle with guile and stealth, up close he is no slouch, having enough real world practice with his twin short swords to be useful in a brawl.

In terms of non-combat skills, as a wanderer who has been a lone wolf for a long time, he has real world practice in all the required skills to survive in the wilderness. He is a knowledgeable fisherman, gatherer and survivalist and while his cooking would never be mistaken for that of a master chef, he can make a tasty enough hearty meal with whatever he's got on hand.

Other:

He wanders in search of his younger sister, who is everything he isn't.

Name: Taeyeon "Tae" Lee
Age: 22

Appearance:

tumblr_o9sgjryr2O1tymdxxo1_500.jpg

Skills: Tae's specialty lays in magic, as she's shown to have a distinct affinity for animals and nature. She naturally can understand other animals, and has the ability to switch between three forms: her default human form, a snow leopard, and even a serpentine dragon - however, she tends to utilize the former two out of convenience and efficiency. Because of this, her senses are far superior to normal humans, and she is flexible, impressively so. As far as technology goes, she knows how to fire a gun with surprising accuracy, but that's about it - she prefers to rely on her natural strength.

Other: She is rather short and extremely underweight for her age, and it shows in her extremely gaunt and skinny figure. She can come off as odd and aloof, when in reality she just isn't very good with other people due to her awkward and introverted nature. She tends to value sleep over friendship, and if forced to choose between her bed and her dearest friend, she'd pick the former in a heartbeat. Tae is thought to be the human version of paper; this is due to her not only being as pale as a ghost, but also because she seems fragile and thin. Appearances can be deceiving, however. Among her nicknames, the most common ones are T, Tae, Taeng, and Taengoo. Many have commented on the fact that she has a heavenly singing voice, but she doesn't seem to agree. She also can't cook to save her life, so she typically just hunts for food in her snow leopard form in the wilderness.

Name: Dvaara (Ra) Santaree
Age: 25
Gender: Male

Appearance:

dpp_0006-copy.jpg

Skills: Ra is a normal human with little to no magical talent, while he does know the basics behind it and how it works, mainly due to him looking into it in order to help his sister, he himself isn't able nor is he interested in learning magic. Dvaara's skills instead lay in his stealth and recon abilities, having spent years as a raider he's developed an acute sense for strategy and thinking of ways for a raid to go successful, you'd rarely see him go off script or do anything rashly, instead preferring to take his time and make sure that things go smoothly as possible.

Physically Ra isn't a fighter, he knows enough to defend himself but mainly relies on hiding or getting away. Because of this he's also preferred the use of weapons, something that was quite hard to get in the sector he and his sister grew up in. Nevertheless, he took an interest and learned to utilize hand guns, rifles and grenades while also studying up on how other models work and how they can be used. That being said, even with his knowledge he's actually not that great a shot and prefers to save his bullets for when he really needs them.

Outside of raiding Ra's shown to be curious and studious, usually trying to figure out as much as he can about everything, he also dreams of establishing his own sector where he can find and give stability to others, which is why he's chosen to keep moving alongside his sister.

Other: Contrary to the image above, Ra is actually very unkempt and is lazy when it comes to taking care of his appearance, it's not weird to see him walking around or talking normally while covered in dirt and he and his sister can sometimes get into arguments over him forgetting to bathe.

Name: Peera Uthaa-Huaa
Gender: Female
Age: 20

Appearance:
hqdefault.jpg

Skills: Peera's main skills lie in her ability to use fire, having first used it all the way back when she was a baby, in which she accidentally set her mother's hair on fire. Since then she's lived her life trying her best to harness her strength, but alas fire is whimsical. Some days she can control it fine, while others, especially if her emotions are clouded, it can rage and go out of control. On a good day she's able to throw fire balls and use it as a jet of flames of ranging proportions, on an off day she'd either fail to either create anything or send out raging flames that she'll be unable to manipulate.

However, her emotional reactions are also a strength for her as she's very self-aware and emotionally conscious of others, usually trying her best to spot cues that tell her how others are feelings. She doesn't always do anything on these hunches though, but mainly uses it as notes to keep on them. This has benefitted her during raids as she can figure out when she or others need to pull back or what their target might be feeling.

Unlike her bother, Peera is a lot more straightforward in her approach to life, that's not to say she's rash but she'd willingly pick the road more travelled by if it fulfills her goals quickly, which has caused some friction with others when she, for example, charges headfirst with her flames even though her control of them can be varied.

She's also physically adept, having trained in martial arts as a way to make up for her lack of proper magic control and while she's not as knowlegeable on guns as her brother, she's pretty mean with a bow and arrow as well as a rifle.

That being said, she isn't just a fighter either, having grown up in an evironment where she was always moving around, Peera's also learned first aid and studied on how to properly take care of wounds (some good cauteration always comes in handy) she's no expert but she'll pad you out good to make sure you don't die.

Other: Possibly due to the contrast with her abilities, Peera hates rainy days and has a tendency of choosing not to go out during them. She's also pretty good at map reading and when she applies herself can be a really good hunter.
