It's been an age since Alice Hope had visited the Adoption Centre, and she'd been through a lot since the last adoption, too. She'd been on an adventure that she wasn't even sure she'd technically survived and more similar to that, but Alice wasn't going to share those details with the staff. She didn't want to freak them out, especially not when she had seen an advertisment for a perfect little soul. There wasn't a limit to the amount of cuteness her large Cloud home could fit (really – when you were a famous trainer and idol there was no shortage of work, traditional or otherwise).

She was wearing more than they'd ever seen her in, most likely. It was cold outside, loose blonde hair topped with a woolly pink hat that covered the ears and had a bobble on top, and a big matching coat with zip hidden behind fastened buttons. Now inside, she tucked her gloves into her pockets, patterned trainers not making much noise as the young woman trailed past the enclosures until finally, she found the Skitties.

It was a little difficult to tell them apart, but Alice had pulled out her predictably-coloured Pokegear out. It was covered with stickers on the back, but on its screen there was a picture of the chosen feline, downloaded from where she'd found it. “I'd like this Skitty, please. They all are, but I think this one's a real cutie and would suit our team.” She explained to the assistant she'd asked along with her. It had been a while, and Alice was more formal than she used to be, it seemed. Maybe it was the change of processes, or perhaps it was something else... But she was different. “Unless the other girl would want to come along more. I don't mind, I'm not here to force a Pokemon to come with me.” She had always asked them first, tried to persuade them, even. The Bellsprout in her hair, Bentley, remembered it well. He'd left his grassy home in this pose a long time ago, and so many others had left with Alice before and after him.

Would there be another after the Skitty? Only time would tell.

A cool breeze blew across the island, sneaking in through the lab window to play mischievously with a stack of loose papers. Professor Indica dropped a lazy hand on to of the documents to keep them from blowing off her dress. At no point in the process did she look up from her work, peering at a lengthy government form from behind drooping eyelids. Across the room, the constant scuttling of Professor Sativa echoed, as she unpacked boxes of large, intimidating looking books and arranged them on a shelf.

"Go tell Aunt Rhodie, go tell Aunt Rhodie, oh, go tell Aunt Rhodie..."

"Why are you singing?" Indica asked, concentration finally breaking. She heaved a defeated sigh, and slumped back into her desk chair, thick chestnut ringlets splaying out around her bespectacled face and spilling down her shoulders in heavy cascades.

"Because I'm happy-" Sativa replied, chipperly. Her statement ended with an abrupt glottal stop, followed by an unladylike grunt, as she hoisted a document box above her head and onto the top shelf. Though the heavy cardboard was worn out and peeling, the meticulous, dated labels suggested whatever inside was very important. Once the box was safely stowed, Sativa heaved her own tired sigh, and flopped down on the wooden floor for a moment of rest. Flopping onto her back, she laid there and stared up at the ceiling with a broad grin. "Finally. Our own lab. How cool is this?"

"It would be cooler," Indica ruminated, casting a dirty look to the forms she had abandoned. "If I didn't have to file our taxes."

"We can't afford an accountant," Sativa lamented. "We can't even afford interns right now."

"Well-... we have the one," Indica reminded, glancing out the office window. The angle wasn't good, but she could just barely see the building next door. A Fizzytopia Parks and Wildlife truck was parked out front, its bed loaded with carriers. A tired-looking trainer was talking to the driver through the open window.

"Yeah, but that one was free," Sativa hummed in reply, optimism undeterred. She folded her hands behind her head, her wispy platinum hair crumpling at odd angles between her fingers.

"That say you get what you pay form," Indica exhaled. Reaching up, she removed her large, round glasses to scrub at her face with one hand.

"Don't be mean," Sativa reprimanded. "The kid seems nice. Besides, people aren't exactly lining up to study tonal markers in Pokémon language."

"Don't make fun of my thesis," Indica pouted, as she replaced her glasses.

"It was a great thesis," Sativa assured, kindly, as she pulled herself back to her feet. She stretched noisily, bones popping and lungs groaning, before turning her attention to her colleague.

"You hungry?" She asked. Indica seemed to perk up at this.

"Starving," she confirmed, already standing. Sativa stickered at her predictability.

"Let's go help unload whatever they brought," Sativa posed, as the pair headed to the door. "And then get lunch."

"Are we going to keep the center running?" Indica asked, sounding tired again.

"We'd probably be bad people if we shut down a non-profit, just because we bought the land," Sativa reasoned. "Besides... it's a steady source of specimens, right...?"

"That sounds nefarious, when you say it like that," Indica mused, reaching up to scratch her temple. "Like we're going to experiment on them."

"Just observe!" Sativa quickly corrected. "It's not like we're doing genetic engineering-... it's a linguistics lab. Not even TEPI could get mad over just... listening to Pokémon!"

"TEPI gets mad about everything," Indica deadpanned, squinting against the sun as the pair emerged into the daylight. Next door, the intern and the wildlife officer were already unloading crates. Sativa adjusting her narrow, rectangular glasses, and grabbed Indica by the wrist.

"Let's go earn our lunch," she enthused, pulling Indica along.

"Aren't taxes labor enough-" Indica bemoaned, tiredly. Still, she seemed happy. Together, they crossed the grass from the lab to the Adoption Center, and as they unloaded crates alongside their intern, the warm sun shone and the cool breeze blew.

Pokémon Adopted: Lv. 1 (F) Skitty
Adoption Fee: $200
Poké Ball: Poké Ball
Today's Date: April 5th 2019
The Skitty are both dozing comfortably in their tidy little enclosure, alongside a few other Pokémon of similar overall type. Yet more Pokémon frolic in the near distance, but youŕe not really interested in them, or any of the other lazybones who share the furniture with your intended target. No, you'ŕe single-mindedly fixated on one of the two equally round, equally pink bundles snoring away. You flag down an exhausted-looking -- and oddly familiar -- intern, who appears to be working alone. You pose your request, and the intern -- whose continued existence seems to be contingent on the river of caffeine pumping through their veins behind dead eyes -- nods.

"Sure," drawls the worker, listless but pleasant. "Let me just get one of the professors-"

With that, the intern shuffles off, leaving you alone at the edge of the enclosure. Your brief exchange seems to have woken up some of the nearby Pokémon, who regard you with various levels of lucidity. Amongst them is one of the Skitty, whose consciousness is determinable only by its raised head. It squints at you through its seemingly closed gaze, and then its tail begins to thrash. Pulling itself to its feet, it bounds to the babygate-like fence, managing to trod on the head of its still-sleeping companion in the process. As its assaulted counterpart adjusts to its sudden, violent awakedness, it leaps onto the post of the fence separating the two of you, and scales it with its sharp but sharp claws. When it reaches the top it leans its body against yours, and for a moment it seems like it really likes you... until, just as quickly, it takes off again, your gloves now in its mouth. Halfway across the enclosure, it drops the gloves, and begins swatting them around ferociously, having evidently decided they were some kind of prey item. All you can do is watch helplessly as it shreds them to the best of its abilities. Meanwhile, the other Skitty has meandered its way to the gating. It sniffs at your shoe through the barrier, and then sits down and meows, loud and expectantly, It seems to expect you to feed it. You don't have much of a chance to react, however, as in that moment the intern returns, accompanied by a sleepy-looking woman with a head of thick, brown curls. She blinks down at the nearby Skitty, who is still demanding food, and then bends over the fence and picks it up.

"This one?" She clarifies, having evidently been told you wanted a Skitty. You don't really get a chance to answer her though, as she tucks it under her arm and leads you to the front desk to fill out your paperwork. Abandoning your gloves, which are likely beyond salvage at this point anyway, you follow her. She places the Skitty on the countertop which she produces the necessary forms; well-behaved but curious, it swats at anything that passes in front of it, including the clipboard of forms, the pen handed to you, and your own hand as you work to fill the paperwork out. When your hand ceases to amuse, it begins demanding food again, chattering away demandingly. When you don't acquiesce, it plops itself down on the papers in front of you, and begins to chew at one of the buttons of your coat. Finishing the paperwork is difficult, and takes far too long, but eventually, you succeed. When you're finished, you pick up the Skitty, who doesn't resist and continues to alternate between trying to mutilate your coat, and demanding foodstuffs. Its unclear if it actually likes you, but it's willing to accept you as food and entertainment, at least. On the way out, you pass the enclosure again; the other Skitty has drug the remains of your gloves back to its sleeping spot, and seems to be guarding them. As you walk by, it growls. Leaving, it is unclear if you even got the Skitty you wanted. You seem to have gotten the nicer of the two, at least, although it seems demanding and easily bored, the way it wriggles in your arms looking for something else on your person to poke at, pausing only to issue the occasional expectant meow. Good luck with that!

Pokémon Adopted: Rowlet, Female, Level 1
Adoption Fee: $200
Poké Ball: Nest Ball 1/2
Today's Date: 26/4/2019
"Can Rowlet mimic human speech?" Professor Indica asked, in her usual lazy tone, squinting at the orb-shaped bird Pokémon in her wife's arms. It cooed softly, head rotating from one side to another in constant curiosity. It sort of weirded her out, if she was being honest.

"I don't think so," Professor Sativa hummed, thoughtful and chipper. "But... it's not like I studied Rowlet in grad school."

"No, you studied tone," Indica reminded, a little cheeky.

"Tone is important!" Sativa defended. She lifted the Rowlet up in the air in front of her face, hands under its wings. It turned its head to look at her, and she smiled at it, brightly. "I think intonation is key in deciphering Pokémon speech."

"I think you're right," Indica conceded, sweetly, unable to bring herself to rib the blond too fiercely. "I don't think you're going to find the answers in that bird, though."

"No," Sativa sighed. "...probably not. But only because it's leaving."

They paused at the door that led from the exterior enclosures into the back of the Adoption Center building, and Indica opened it. The Rowlet was on her way to her new trainer, and it was there job to deliver her. Well... sort of. Really, it was their intern's job, but their intern was nowhere to be found. Indica, who resented the distraction from their work more than Sativa did, wondered if they should just get themselves another intern, but... well, it wasn't like they could afford it, on the budget of a non-profit charity and research facility.

"Are you excited to go to your new home?" Sativa asked the bird in her grasp. The Rowlet made an indecipherable noise. "I'm going to take that as a yes," she decided, willful and oblivious.

Adoption of Lv. 01 (F) Rowlet confirmed.

Pokémon Adopted: Lv. 01 (F) Axew
Adoption Fee: $200
Poké Ball: Pokeball (I now have 6)
Today's Date: April 27th, 2019
Indica stared at Axew. Axew stared at Indica. Slowly, Indica reached out towards the Dragon-type Pokémon. It opened its disproportionately large mouth, and snapped at her, causing her to drop back onto her own ass from her crouched position as she lost balance in her fear. The critter covered its mouth with its tiny hands and snickered, the sound hoarse and throaty.

Xexexexexe.

Indica narrowed her rose-colored eyes, and leaned forward on her knees, taking advantage of the Axew's distraction in order to seize it by the scruff of the neck. It immediately began to screech as if it were dying, the sound viscerally unsettling. Indica ran out of the nearby shed to see what the commotion was about, eyes wide with fright. Instead of whatever horrible thing she had been expecting, she found her wife sitting in the dirt, the hems of her coat and skirt dirty, a flailing dragon in her hand.

"Do you... need help?" Sativa asked, uncertainly, as Indica hoisted herself to her feet, face set with cross determination.

"Nope," she informed, tucking the angry Axew under one elbow. She began marching towards the center's back door, and Sativa just stood there and watched, until she had disappeared inside to -- presumably -- deliver the Pokémon to its new trainer. It wasn't typical to see her usually sleepy spouse so worked up, but evidently the Axew had crossed a line... somehow. Exhaling through her nose, Sativa shrugged it off and went back into the shed to finish digging out gardening supplies.

Adoption of Lv. 01 (F) Axew confirmed.

Pokémon available for adoption!
($690) Lv. 42 (M) Eelektross w/ Acrobatics, Drain Punch, Magnet Rise, and Rock Slide

The Adoption Center- a facility with a long and storied history in the Fizzytopia region. Indeed, the place had only recently come under new management yet again. But even as the old management moved on, the best of them was not forgotten. Photos hung on a wall, depicting several of the more remarkable moments in Adoption Center history. One showed a past Adoption Center managed alongside Jack, an Abomasnow who assisted him in tending to the Pokémon. Another showed a young Keith Masters bravely introducing himself to a distrustful Zubat who was trying to bite his arm. Another one showed a remarkably kindhearted Stunfisk administering Cheri Berries to Pokémon terrorized by the other Stunfisk that had been there at the time.

But one photo in particular seemed to be one of the more popular talking points among visitors, for it featured an indisputable celebrity. Indeed, many years ago, a youthful lady had arrived in Fizzytopia's old Adoption Center. Her presence created no small amount of commotion- after all, it wasn't every day that Kalos's League Champion simply strolled on into their humble establishment!

Diantha, however, was very cool about all the attention. As a League Champion and a movie star, she was more than used to throngs of screaming fans, so this turnout was positively tame to her. She gave polite smiles, acknowledged all greetings, but never once deviated from what she was doing- she was examining the Pokémon that were up for adoption, sizing them up. The management at the time watched this with great curiosity. Until at last Diantha had reached a tank containing a fiesty Eelektross. She chose the Eelektross, seemingly satisfied with what she had seen. When asked why she was adopting the Eelektross, she simply gave an inscrutable smile and stated that it was a gift... and a test. Exactly what she meant by that was unclear to anyone present, and no amount of prompting could get her to clarify, so they all had to be content with that answer. Besides, once Diantha got home, her meaning was going to become crystal clear to that whom she intended it to be.
