Pokemon are pixels. A Wooper isn't tangible. You can't hold it, have it stare at you, potentially get sexually abused by drunken hobos, etc. ...

I dunno, ever since I was a kid, I always imagine things like Furbies and those virtual babies being used for the most vile, disgusting things. o_O

Um, isn't that just a fancy-schmancy, Japanese definition of the format every newspaper comic has used ever?

Possibly. I really liked how the Wind Waker manga pulled it off. And, of course, it's vertical, not horizontal.
