is that why the sockets look like '=D'

Because it's not necessary, Euro-n00bs.
A) Europe doesn't have the Earth wire, Amerin00b.
B) It's better there than not.

Here we go, this is basically what my laptop's cord looks like:

And yeah, our outlets all look like =. (That period needs to be higher up, but meh.)

I guess... when you see it every day, it's not interesting anymore.

What about plugs/outlets where you live?

A picture of both:

and I may as well include the inside of a UK plug, in case you are ever in need of a guide to rewire one...

A) You are.
B) Prove it.
A) I'm what?
B) If a fault develops and the outer casing becomes live, the electricity gets taken straight to the ground via the Earth Wire so if you touch it, you don't get electrocuted.

Huh, interesting. It's not too different from ours. Altho the UK pic doesn't seem to be working...

The plugs are different is because the voltage output differs between US and Europe.

Ah, OK. (Little hard to see since it's, well... little. :-D)

Interesting tho. Electronics are way cool.

I like electronics, too!
Do the American plugs have the fuses inside them or the sockets?

I live in Europe, and my plugs don't look like that. They look like the plug I posted an image of, only those two things are round.

Erm, I have no idea... I'll look it up, however.

(dum de da dum do...)

Hmmm, it seems the rods just go straight into the wire. No fancy wiring after all. Well that's boring.

The US's appliances and stuff are designed to not use as much electricity as Europe's. So, never plug anything from the US into a wall socket in Europe or it'll fry.

That may be part of the reason the plugs are shaped differently.

But usually stuff you can buy in Europe was a switch on it that'll make it compatible, and the plugs have an adaptor so they'll fit.

A stereo I bought in Iraq did anyway.

If that were a good reason, then you'd hear about a lot more electrocutions in the U.S. than in Europe. But you don't. So it isn't.
