Master Boot Record. When you install Ubuntu, or any other Linux operating system, the MBR will get updated... and GRUB will be installed so that you can boot into Ubuntu. Since I have no use for Ubuntu anymore, I entered System Recovery, repaired the MBR, deleted the partitions, extended the Windows partition and was done with it.
Well, if you want to get rid of Ubuntu later on, you will need to reset the MBR before deleting the partition. In Windows 7, I believe that you need to boot into System Recovery and use the command prompt there to run bootrec -fixmbr. I believe that it also works in Windows Vista. As for Windows XP, I do not know, however, I think fixmbr exists as a separate command. You can't run them from the normal or Safe Mode environment, so you'll need System Recovery/Recovery Console.
