One thing about the homunculus thing from 2003 was that it just seems really implausible. Surely more people would have attempted human transmutation than that since the temptation is so high and it seems relatively easy (easy enough for two little kids to do anyway). Also did they just decide to start naming themselves after the seven deadly sins even though there weren't even seven of them to start with? Did the first one just decide to name him/herself after one of the sins, then they got lucky enough that someone attempted to transmute a fat slob of a human that eats everything and were like "oh cool, there's gluttony" or something? I dunno, it doesn't make much sense to me.
One thing I don't like about both is how they're so inconsistent with their depiction of the sin in question. Greed and 2003!Sloth were more complex versions of the sins in question, but then we have Gluttony, who is pretty much the most literal version of the sin possible, even though, if you take the expanded version of what "gluttony" means (anything you have a bodily craving to consume, so drugs and alcohol count as well as food) it could have made for a pretty interesting homunculus. But nope, he just loves to eat. And Lust doesn't seem to be particularly lascivious in either. I mean, she's hot but...that's it. I guess in Brotherhood she uses others' lust for her gain in the case of her being Havoc's girlfriend (but seriously, they could have done way more with that arc).
I figured the deal was that previous homunculi had been killed by Dante or someone else, because when Greed was released they introduced him to the "new Lust" and the "new Sloth" and so on and so forth. And I think Gluttony was supposed to be one of the ones that Dante created just to have more minions, just like she did with Pride. We're told the first homunculus in that version was Envy, and I mean, he is pretty much the sin embodied, so maybe the naming tradition started with him.
Also, even if others had tried human transmutation, it doesn't matter unless Dante knew about it and fed the resulting homunculus red stones in time. Otherwise, they just die of starvation quickly in their mutilated state. She knew to keep an eye on Ed and Al because they were Hohenheim's sons. The only one that kind of puzzles me is how she might have known about Scar's brother. I guess maybe the other homunculi were keeping their eye out for potential desperate alchemists who might try it during the Ishvalan War?
(Should I have used spoiler tags for this? I feel like most anime fans know this much about the plot of the first FMA anime.)
