One thing about the homunculus thing from 2003 was that it just seems really implausible. Surely more people would have attempted human transmutation than that since the temptation is so high and it seems relatively easy (easy enough for two little kids to do anyway). Also did they just decide to start naming themselves after the seven deadly sins even though there weren't even seven of them to start with? Did the first one just decide to name him/herself after one of the sins, then they got lucky enough that someone attempted to transmute a fat slob of a human that eats everything and were like "oh cool, there's gluttony" or something? I dunno, it doesn't make much sense to me.

One thing I don't like about both is how they're so inconsistent with their depiction of the sin in question. Greed and 2003!Sloth were more complex versions of the sins in question, but then we have Gluttony, who is pretty much the most literal version of the sin possible, even though, if you take the expanded version of what "gluttony" means (anything you have a bodily craving to consume, so drugs and alcohol count as well as food) it could have made for a pretty interesting homunculus. But nope, he just loves to eat. And Lust doesn't seem to be particularly lascivious in either. I mean, she's hot but...that's it. I guess in Brotherhood she uses others' lust for her gain in the case of her being Havoc's girlfriend (but seriously, they could have done way more with that arc).

I figured the deal was that previous homunculi had been killed by Dante or someone else, because when Greed was released they introduced him to the "new Lust" and the "new Sloth" and so on and so forth. And I think Gluttony was supposed to be one of the ones that Dante created just to have more minions, just like she did with Pride. We're told the first homunculus in that version was Envy, and I mean, he is pretty much the sin embodied, so maybe the naming tradition started with him.

Also, even if others had tried human transmutation, it doesn't matter unless Dante knew about it and fed the resulting homunculus red stones in time. Otherwise, they just die of starvation quickly in their mutilated state. She knew to keep an eye on Ed and Al because they were Hohenheim's sons. The only one that kind of puzzles me is how she might have known about Scar's brother. I guess maybe the other homunculi were keeping their eye out for potential desperate alchemists who might try it during the Ishvalan War?

(Should I have used spoiler tags for this? I feel like most anime fans know this much about the plot of the first FMA anime.)

In Brotherhood I think they are more literal than they were in the 2003. I'm not going to say too much because I'm trying not to spoil anything.

I think you're good on the spoiler tags unless someone complains.

I mean, I know most of the big spoilers anyway, so you probably don't have to worry about that. I'm not someone who minds spoilers that much.

Anyway, I love Google:

I do, I hate spoilers. They make me not happy. AMC are miserable assholes because they spoil the next Walking Dead episode in their commercials.

Yeah, I know my like of spoilers is an unpopular opinion, but that's how I feel. Although it depends a lot on the particular spoiler in question and the work in question.

But sometimes I actually like to be spoiled because then I can focus on other shit about the work other than "what's gonna happen next?" Like, in terms of the execution of it.

It's weird for me. When I'm watching something that has had a major event spoiled, a lot of times I'll just sit there and be like "okay, when is this going to happen now?" and I still won't be able to focus on what is going on, just when that thing is coming.

For something that hasn't been spoiled, it can be a lot to take in at first, but if it was really good then I can just rewatch it later to get all the details. For me there is nothing like watching it the first time when you don't know what is going to happen.

One thing I was incredibly glad to be spoiled on was the ending of Downton Abbey season three, which was:

Matthew's death

because it was such a terrible plot choice (but kind of forced on the writers since the actor wanted to leave the show) and I feel like everyone else who didn't know, that stupid idea defined the entire finale for them. I'm glad I knew it was coming, and when it was coming, so I could enjoy the rest of the episode better.

ETA: New topic, much as I'd love to keep discussing FMA and spoilers - I can't believe it's already been five years since I graduated from high school. GUESS WHO IS NOT GOING TO THE REUNION?

I know I'm not going.

I mean, even bothering to buy a plane ticket is too much hassle...

That being said, I'm actually wondering why the army haven't recalled me for these yearly "let's not fuck up and forget what you learned when you were in" maneuvers. The less I hear, the better though, it's not like I have the time for that, but I think it's strange, as I would assume I would be one of the first ones to be called in.

@H-con; There's bad blood between my high school and me (namely, my mom also used to be a teacher there and they treated her like shit) so I would have no interest in going to my reunion anyway, but I feel like particularly at the five-year point, there are still going to be lots of awkward, stupid comparisons going on. The kids who went to my school were always super-competitive with each other and I'm not going to have some people make me feel like dirt because I'm still in grad school while some of them have cushy jobs at tech companies with benefits and so on.

I mean, I was never going to get that anyway. My plan was always to get my Ph.D. in the academic field of my choice and become a professor. I don't feel like I should have to have everything in my life figured out at age 23.

Plus, it's not worth the price of a plane ticket and having to find somewhere to stay (since my parents don't live in the area anymore).

Someone tried to organize a 5 year reunion for us in the fall. I didn't go because I didn't feel like hearing everyone say "I went to college and now I'm looking for a job" all night. I think I'll go to the 10 year reunion though.

It's not so much that I was unpopular or didn't have friends, it's that five years on, I couldn't care less about most of those people and don't like the destructive, ultra-competitive environment that that school in particular perpetuated and which way too many people who went there are still buying into, five years on.

(FTR my high school was an all-International-Baccalaureate magnet school for nerds, not a normal public high school.)

Anyway, you shouldn't feel bad if you want to go to your reunion. I am probably going to go to some of my college reunions.

Someone tried to organize a 5 year reunion for us in the fall.

Was it successful?

I'm almost wondering if it's worth worrying about the competitive nature because a lot of the people who are still living in the Detroit area and will most easily be able to make the reunion are the people who aren't doing so well. Then again, the ultra-successful people who are junior execs in some regional branch of Google or whatever will be able to throw down tons of money for a hotel. And weirdly, those are the people who are most proud of going to our high school, even though my school was pretty much all smoke and mirrors and the people who did well after high school were the people who would have done well anywhere.

Been too long since I've interacted with most people from high school and I would prefer it to stay that way.

The one close friend I have from high school drives me freaking crazy, and she totally has one of those crazy-competitive, status-obsessed mentalities I can't stand.

She was really surprised I didn't have a LinkedIn. I'm like, "because no one uses that in my field? And I have no need to 'network' with people in our high school who are doing completely different things?"

I mean, there's a reason I've defriended 90% of those people on Facebook over the past five years.

The one you graduated from? Unless you were only there a short while, then the one where you were there the longest.

A five year reunion seems rather useless. Not much has changed since then.

Maybe 10-15 years.

My class, is well, I don't make enemies, but I don't really care for about 50% of them. Although I would love to see how everyone was doing after 20 years or so.
