I don't read superhero comics (unless Watchmen counts) so this conversation is making me feel lost.

Watchmen counts, though it kind of started a bad trend of grim n gritty stuff. It's a seminal piece of work, but I prefer other things. I know you don't read comics but if you liked Watchmen you would dig Zenith and probably Animal Man

Deadpool is pretty sweet, I loved Cable and Deadpool and that Suicide Kings miniseries where he fought Tombstone and called him a punk a$$ b)##)
I was always big into spider-man, and I loved the issue where him and deadpool had a joke-off and Deadpool bust out his ultimate joke that he whispered into some kid's ear and he went home crying

then spider-man is like "dude, not cool" and walks away

@Typhlosionisafirebadger; But isn't Watchmen more of a graphic novel that kind of used the superhero genre as a means to another end? I mean, that's what I got out of it. It involves superheroes but I don't think it counts as a "superhero comic" since that's really not what it's about per se.

@Booster Gold; I refuse to see the Watchmen movie. I didn't enjoy the one Alan Moore film adaptation everyone likes (V for Vendetta) so I'm sure I'd hate the film of Watchmen since its reception was much more mixed.

It's more of a graphic novel yeah, but it's based off a group of superheroes that were bought out by DC comics

all the watchmen characters are analogues of characters from a company called charlton comics. there's a lot of superhero comics or well comics that are experimental with their content.

Ozymandias=captain atom
Silk Spectre=phantom lady
Nite-Owl(s)=Blue Beetles
Rorschach=The Question
The Comedian=Peacemaker
ozymandias=Peter cannon and so on and so forth. like you said it used superheroes to make a point, but at the same time it was also the genesis of the dark comics era, where things got a lot more serious and the stuff that followed gave us more mature comics like Hellblazer, Swamp Thing, Animal Man and the like.

it lead to cool stuff like that, but also some really uh less than great things

@Typhlosionisafirebadger; Oh, right. Yeah, I forgot about that, that they were bought out and based on previously-existed superheroes.

I still think thematically, though, it counts as a genre apart, though, at least in terms of the time in which it was made (before it spawned a bunch of dark and gritty imitators, as you said). It was as much a superhero series as Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a magical-girl anime.

Anyway, I used to think asking who your favorite Watchmen character is/who you thought was the "hero" of the story tells a lot about a person (back when I was obsessed with it), so who is yours?

can't really argue with you there, you're right on that

uhh i didn't really find anyone to be the "hero" if that makes sense, but if I had to choose? Nite-owl/Ben when he finally got his ass into gear

@Typhlosionisafirebadger; Yeah, he and Silk Spectre II/Laurie were probably the most sympathetic characters.

IMO Rorschach fanboys are the worst ever. I think I only used that test to weed those out when I was all like "omg I love Watchmen! do you?" and wanted to talk to everyone around me who had read it.

Although, Rorschach is the only sane man when it comes to their reactions to Adrian Veidt's plot.

Yeah you're right about Rorschach on both counts. He's a truly messed up individual but his actions in the final moments were legit. I always found it weird people thought he was badass and then I realized badass to them meant "REAL SCREWED UP"

it's also weird to think that The Question who Rorschach was based off was made by Spider-man's co-creator Steve Ditko

if you eve rdo want to check out a comic series, I think you'd like Planetary or The Authority. PLanetary is kind of like the comic version of the X-files, a love letter to pulp fiction, superheroes, John Woo films and weird science

The Authority is basically "What if superheroes went the extra mile?" and like a high scale movie in comic form. Plus it had one of the coolest couples in comics, Apollo and Midnighter

yeah like, why'd they do that?

it always feels weird when comic movies eschew certain things for "seriousness" or "realism"

it's like we're already watching a movie about a dude who wears bright colored tights fighting monsters, and NOW you want to apply reality to it?

which makes me feel like we'll never see a captain marvel movie

I mean, the original Watchmen ending was majorly acid-headed, and maybe they did it more for palatability than they did it for "realism" - because when you've got a character who is basically a human bomb, realism isn't really your top priority to begin with.

The "changing things to be more palatable to a larger audience" thing, though, is pretty much the entire reason I hate the V for Vendetta movie (but what they changed basically changed the whole theme of the movie IMO).

yeah that's probably it. I think I don't have to worry about a Captain Marvel movie being made, Pixar would do The Big Red Cheese justice

I never saw the V for Vendetta movie, so what'd they do to the ending?
