Also re: homemade bread, one of my stepdad's old churches (he's a Presbyterian minister, for those who don't already know) made their own bread for the communion because one of the girls in the choir had celiac disease (and this was before gluten-free was the "hip new thing"). Their bread was some of the best bread I've ever tasted.
Homemade bread is fab. I should try making some some time.
They didn't even give out grape juice, it was just those cardboard-esque wafers.
Okay, that's really weird, you're supposed to have both. Wine/grape juice is the blood of Christ and wafers/bread are the body.
I know what the belief is (especially the Catholic version where the bread [cardboard wafer] and wine are supposed to be literally the body and blood of Christ), but they just didn't feed us any drink. I don't know what to tell ya sister.
Also we always got white wine at the Lutheran church, presumably so it didn't stain if someone spilled.
