I didn't make one rebuttal toward her opinion (whatever it was, it's been overshadowed by this whole age is not relative to intelligence exchange), I just said "lol 13 year olds" and made a few counterarguments to the whole ageist thing when I was called such for the 9/11 quote.

A lot of stuff I'm taught in high school is impractical and unnecessary, but I want to learn it anyway.

True to a point, but you can't really end any debate by saying "I'm older than you." I tend to avoid commenting the 13 year old kids who say "wine tastes bad" in the bulba pub because it's obvious that not only do they not have any experience at all to contribute on the matter, but it's an objective fact that tastes change over time. It's better to ignore them than to argue because that way you avoid the "age doesn't matter" debate.

Don't get me wrong, I dislike it as well when someone denounces my intellect or reasoning because I am only of legal drinking age as of this year and they have a divorced wife and kids. I made the 13 year old thing in frivolous spirit and when I was labeled an ageist and such for it, I just countered the labels with my personal thoughts on the subject because people kept bringing it up.

Technically the only thing that is really necessary is survival instinct. Cave men survived with nothing but that, but even they had to have a basic understanding of physics. For example, you need to have some understanding of refraction in order to spear a fish, and you need to know if you're going to be able to outrun a predator or something.

The thing is that one needs to have learned from mistakes to better their judgement and insight, and I don't feel someone whose earliest memory would not date back a decade would be able to overcome their inexperience as well as those that are over 7 years older than them. In general it would not matter past the early 20's, but a fresh teen I can't see radiating maturity. It wasn't directed towards her, the 13 year old thing just got brought up.

Growing older doesn't automatically make someone have better judgement or insight than someone who is younger. While many teenagers have the sense to not to commit crimes, there are many adults that do not have that judgement. What about the younger generation who is constantly creating innovations and ideas the world's never seen before? I think those points prove that while age may play a role, it does not dictate who you are as a person. Just my two cents.

@TheMissingno.; You probably didn't find any literature questions when doing tax returns, because its, ya know, tax returns.

And the parabola thing? I wouldn't ever need to know that they exist to throw an object. You don't need to learn about them unless you plan on applying it in your work. For a bin man or a janitor or CEO, parabolas and Shakespeare knowledge are of little value.

I never said it was absolute. Just that there comes a point where it's not easy to completely dismiss it. Fyi I also said I am able to treat 15-16 year olds (who are not allowed purchase tobacco, vote, or in most countries, drive) on equal footing, so I definitely don't jump into immediate conclusions like that. We are equal in the sense that she is a human as I am, but I, like most adults have a sizable head start that I do not see as completely worth ignoring.

Value? Knowledge has value in it's own right. Should we as humans, from janitors to professors, not seek intellectual enrichment?

Not to mention, knowledge is power.

I'm with H-con on this one. I hate not knowing things, and learning new crap keeps your brain sharp and stuff.

This is what I've been saying this whole time?

@TheMissingno.; Oh, I've been dismissive of 13-year-olds when it comes to alcohol, or sex. That's something where life experience and maturity are relevant and where a lot of them are speaking out of a lack of experience, and they're also taking messages that are specifically designed for their age group (for example, the same amount of alcohol affects a 13-year-old mind far more than it does a 23-year-old mind) and assuming it's universal.

But I don't see any reason to be dismissive of @Guinevere; here because she's 13. I only brought it up to establish where she was in school, and she said that probably her attitude is due to not learning history that way yet. She's good at admitting when she doesn't know things, which is more than can be said for most teenagers - most people in general, really. She doesn't deserve this crap.

Also, general patterns don't mean every individual older person will be smarter or more mature than every individual younger person. Funny that when I was the same age and would get in arguments with people older than me on the Internet, this would pretty much only come up when I had the other person in checkmate, so to speak.

Im not good at math :(
In our ignorant country, being good at math is a sign your parents should've paid for your MIT degree.

It wasn't for the sake of creating tension or making her feel beneath older users, nor was I in an argument (did not even read much of the topic once I stopped talking about racist pricks) or itching to stir controversy. But when I get labeled an ageist for stating a fact (13 - 12 = 1) in a moderately cynical way I would delve to counter remarks thrown at me, would I not?

Been a long time since I learned any math, I dunno how much I'd need to relearn now, even if I wanted to go to college :/
