I've determined a conclusion to exactly why Pokemon is my favorite game series.
I like variety. Pokemon, aside from the more hidden mechanics such as IV's, EV's, natures, egg moves, etc, which make for a highly complex and enjoyable metagame for the most part, is a fairly simple RPG (aside from the following lol). That's not why I like it. The staggering 600+ species, many of which I really like, allow a lot of cool things for me to be a fan of. With Zelda, for example, I feel like there's not much I can really be a fan of. There's Link, the Happy Mask Salesman, Zelda, Ghirahim, Ganandorf, the windmill guy, and all that jazz, but there's not a whole lot of really notable characters that you can like. Maybe there's like 30 Zelda characters that people can pick from. With Pokemon, you have like 649 Pokemon, and over 300 evolutionary families (too lazy to count this to get the exact number). Also, I enjoy trying out different Pokemon. In pretty much every other game, you're forced to choose from a limited group of playable characters. This doesn't make them bad games at all, but I really like Pokemon's hugeass roster. Pokemon is also a great discussion topic, and not just for the Pokemon themselves, as the games have a large amount of content in general. Pokemon would be a perfect series in my opinion if they changed the main series formula, gave it a better plot, and maybe try some new gameplay stuff.
That and Pokemon Gold was one of my first video games. ^^;
It does to me, I see what you're saying. I like Pokemon mostly because of the sheer variety of the species, even stemming back to when I started playing. 151 doesn't sound like much today, but back then it was a heck of a lot to choose from.
I think a deeper plot would be OK, but I'm pretty content with playing through the games as they are. It's all about the journey for me, which stems from the original games, which had little plot to speak of. That didn't bother me one bit, I just liked going on an adventure with my Pokemon, and I still do.
Ive been playing the games quite a long time and I think they are pretty good how they are. A better plot would be nice, though Im ok with how it is now. I like how you can customise your game to a certain extent, I cant count how many times you could probabaly play through a game using different Pokemon/moves, but a lot. I like that about it. You can also make the game more difficult by playing competitively or doing a challenge like Nuzlocke.
