Re: The Bulbagarden Non-Topic Conversational Thread

Okay, so... today I watched Eragon for acting class. We're supposed to critique a movie of our choice. On the last question I'm supposed to give my impression of the movie.

Who wants to read it?

I do. But I would have picked a better movie to watch for acting class...

I chose it simply because I wanted to critique a bad movie.

How effective were the visual elements in this production? Scenery, lights, costumes, makeup?

The costumes were rather good, I’ll give them that. Except the Varden. They were wearing these brightly colored outfits that reminded me of the people in Disney’s Aladdin. But for the most part everything looked good. I particularly like Arya’s armor in the final fight, which seemed like a more feminine mail armor with metal leaves in her hair. It wasn’t bad, which is good because they totally killed her character in this film.

Durza though… He honestly looked creepy. Realistically creepy. He had all these scars and a pale face and he had these red marks all around his eyes and mouth. And he had red hair. Very demented. Not really how he’s supposed to look, but whatever. The movie made enough mistakes I can forgive it.

Saphira though… that was a major feat in CG. Extremely realistic. I really liked how they portrayed her. Every texture was perfect. I wonder if maybe they spent so much on making the dragon look good that the rest of the crew suffered.

What was your overall impression of this movie? At the end of this paragraph, indicate how you would rate this movie on a scale of 1 to 4 stars (feel free to use half stars). Would you recommend this play to a friend? Why or why not?

This movie was not very good. It has become a description for any movie that is based off of another literary work but all in all fails to impress even the least hard core of fans. I had seen this movie before but prior to critiquing I watched it again. This time I did my impersonation of the Nostalgia Critic and commented of every part of this movie that didn’t work. And there were a lot of those. There were so many parts of the movie where the authors gave the impression they never read Eldest, and when making a movie based on a book series, if you intend on making sequels you have to actually allow for the sequels to be made. And they didn’t do that. In this movie they killed off the antagonists of the sequel, got rid of characters from the sequel, and totally made it impossible to make a movie that had the same plot as the sequel.

But I think my major beef with the movie is what they did to the characters. Arya was bad enough in that she was NOTHING like the Arya of the novel. I know actors are allowed to give their interpretation of a character, but when trying to please fans of the original material, that interpretation had better be close to the book’s. The main demographic of films based on popular novels are the already established fans, because they are the ones who are for sure going to see it. But Durza apparently got his costume mixed up with some other character from a totally different film, the Urgals don’t look like Urgals (I call them Viking wannabes), Arya doesn’t even have pointy ears (She’s an elf!), Nassuada, a major character in the sequels, gets three lines and no mention of her name. Hrothgar, another major character, isn’t even named or identified as being the Drawf King. He doesn’t even look like a dwarf. For I know, that might not have actually been him! Galbatorix, surprisingly, actually shows up in the movie, despite no description of him having appeared in the book, and then he goes on to look at a map of Alagaesia with the elven kingdom on it. Yeah, he’s not supposed to know where that is yet. Ah, and Angela. What did they do to Angela? Some how the short old herbalist with the Werecat (another major plot point that got cut) became the young, stereotypical fortune teller (Who. Talks. In. the. Third. Person.) and wears gold bangles. I once called her Tia Dalma’s younger sister. Seriously, the character based on the author’s sister got totally and utterly ruined.

The movie, just to put it simply, was not good. It ruined the characters, failed at Alagaesia geography (somehow Daret was the last outpost right before the foothills of the Boer mountains), made it impossible to make a sequel by cutting all ties to one. And it made the fans mad. Very mad. Even non-fans didn’t like it. I give it .5 dragon eggs out of 4, just because Brom and Saphira were decent.

That comic was also brought up by someone when TTE and I were discussing Legendary Pokémon powers.

Haha. It has its uses for a lot of conversations, just like the other Pokemon related ones.
