I got my ears pierced today. =D

Man, disney why did you have to go and ruin my watch of Kiki's Delivery Service.

Disney is the. Fucking. Shit. at dubbing Ghibli. And they take most of the credit for the North American releases anyway. I got so mad the other day watching trailers on YouTube: "DISNEY'S: Ponyo" or "Walt Disney Pictures presents A Hayao Miyazaki Film".

Miramax did a much better job at Princess Mononoke, anyway. The English subs are still crap, though.

Dewgong, Missingno. missed you. isn't that sweet? >w<

I'm touched. =D Now my insanely shitty broadband is getting even worse, so I've only been online at the library or laundromat.

I'll be staying at the Stratosphere this weekend for my aunt's wedding though, so I'll be online 24/7 then.

EDIT: Whoa! Everybody loves me =O I'm sorry I missed the takeover, I was positioned by Cameron to protect Summerland from an Aqua attack at the time.

IMO, the disney dubs aren't bad, I'm complaining about the SUBs so yeah. They're dub VAs know what the hell their doing (unlike other animoo dubbing companies >_>) and they sound good. I'm complaining about the shit subbing job. :/ I mean, when I buy animoo on DVD I don't watch it dubbed more than once (exception: .hack//SIGN. their english VAs were kick ass)... the subs just ruined it for me. :/ Like, come ON, when someone with my limited knowledge of Japanese (though you guys may not agree on the "limited" part xD) can go "that is WRONG, they're not saying that!" there is a problem.

That's what I meant. I love their VAs, the only one I object to is Chihiro from Spirited Away.

jskdasjdgf it's stuff like this that reminds me I need to get my ass in gear and learn this language so I can get a translating job and not have other fans like me have to see shitty subbing jobs like this again. >O motivation, go.

I mean, when there's stuff that's not right it really bothers me now because then anyone sort of learning some basics from shows and such are getting wrong information. >_> Not that I approve of anime being the teacher for the language, but I can't deny it's a useful learning supplement. It does make me feel proud when I can watch something and COMPLETELY ignore the subs and know what's going on. x3

God, I hope the subs don't ruin となりのトトロ. >_> Either that or please bless me tomorrow and have me not understand anything so I don't get PO'd at the subs again. Prolly won't happen though... OTL

unrelated: omg the back of my mouth hurts. Dx I think my wisdom teeth are coming in, oh god. don'twannathinkaboutwhatthismeans.

Am I the only person who thinks the Bug Catching Contests are rigged?
Like seriously.

I've been cutting my game on and off trying to win.
I caught a level 15 beedrill, a paras, a level 18 caterpie, a scyther and plenty of other pokemon and I can't even placed third place.

Something doesn't sit right with this game

What bothered me was Shishigami in Princess Mononoke becoming the Forest Spirit in the the dub. I don't get why they didn't just call it Shishigami, which was a title, not a just a general description like Forest Spirit. In the subs it was even WORSE, being called the "Deer God", which even I, who knows how to do no more than count to ten, name the rainbow say hello and ask for the potty in Japanese knows was totally bullshit because there are no words for Shishigami in English.

I saw some subtitled anime once where they gave the characters horrid English names. I mean, one character was given the name Fred Jones. :|

In the case of dubbing, you do have to let a bit of it slide. People complained they left "sensei" in Ponyo because it's a film younger children will go to (and this goes for all miyazaki's stuff when it comes here) and they won't get it. Plus there's also the lip flaps to match to.

And aaaactually~ Depending on the kanji they used, it's Shishi and Gami, which is either Lion God or Deer God. Gami is an alt reading to 神 (kami), while Shishi becomes 猪 (wild boar), 鹿 (deer), or 獅子 (lion). So... yeah. Kami/Gami is ALWAYS "God" in translations, while "shishi" is a matter of which kanji they used...

... *wikis* Oh, they used Katakana for "shishi" (thus it is シシ神). Though since "deer" is specifically used in the description, translating it to "Deer God" is likely the best sub translation while 'Forest Spirit' is fine for the dub due to it likely working better with lip flaps.

Do not pull that "there is no word for [japanese word] in english" crap. Unless it's something like "Kabuki", "Geisha", or the like, there IS an english word for it. Either you break it down into its kanji or find a suitable meaning. I've seen people say the same shit about "Shinigami", which is an outright lie. 死神 = Kanji for Death and God, so yeah. Hell, anything with "gami" can be translated.

That makes me wonder about the Night-Walker, in the subs it was just called the Night-Walker just like the dub.

Directly from wikipedia. Someone should edit that...

Wikipedia was the only reason I knew that. xD

That makes me wonder about the Night-Walker, in the subs it was just called the Night-Walker just like the dub.

What's the worst about the NA version of that movie was the sheer chance that Miramax would cut out the samurai scenes to keep the movie at a PG rating. And luckily Miyazaki turned them down. *also from wiki*
Didn't Miyazaki say something about how he wants no edits to any of his films with the exception of changing the lip flap.

However, just because it's in Katakana does not mean it isn't translatable. Many times Japanese use Katakana for emphasis while it still DOES have the meaning of the kanji that was meant.

See above edited in comment on the "there is no word for [japanese word] in english".

I should go to bed soon though, keep my mind off the pain of the stupid tooth coming in. Dx

EDIT:

He does approve some changes though. Such as in Kiki's where they drink Hot chocolate rather than coffee (BUT DEAR GOD CAN YOU CHANGE IT IN THE SUBS DISNEY?! >T I CAN HEAR コーヒー) and at the beginning the girls are talking about Kiki meeting boys rather than her going to the disco (SAME AS PREVIOUS CAPSLOCK. I CAN HEAR ディスコ).
