You know how in the pokebeach rumors, the second gym is Fairy? Isn't there a gym with a Roselia statue in what looks like it could be the second gym?

Maybe Rosela's line got retconned. Hey, makes more sense than Marrill. :p
Makes a whole lot less sense. Marill they could just slap it on. Getting rid of either grass or poison for fairy on a pokemon that has pretty much nothing mystical about it would be idiotic.

I seriously don't want them slapping Fairy onto everything just because it's a new type, or because something is in the egg group. I'll accept change like Mawile, Dunsparce, and even Celebi if it were to happen, but things like Pikachu, Roselia, etc have no reason to get a type change.

I mean, Marill doesn't really either, but I just hope they don't continue down that route.

Did anyone discuss how the new type would be implemented into the game?

Is it a retcon? Or is there some explanation?

Currently, simple retcon. No serious explanation yet. That was part of one of the questions last night. They stated that it was started by wanting to balance out powerful dragons.

There is that rumor floating around that some great event or occurrence has awakened hidden powers in some Pokemon.

This would really only apply to older Pokemon since it really would only work on them. It would kinda be weird for the Gen VI Pokemon. Especially the single typed fairies.

I wonder if Japanese gamers are this worked up about the new type. A lot are probably furious because their ULTRA DRAGON DEATHSQUAD TM has a new weakness. :D

While it's not necessarily a given that Fairy will be a type primarily associated with feminine-looking Pokémon, it is certainly possible that this will be the case, given the examples we've seen so far.

And to this, I say: so what?

We already have an overtly "masculine" type: Fighting. It wasn't until Gen V that we got any remotely feminine-looking Fighting-types. For the majority of the franchise's history it's been dominated by male-only or 75% male species. If we can have a type that's primarily associated with masculinity, why is the opposite suddenly a huge problem?

so you don't think there is anything vaguely mystical about a walking rose bush? also poison type sucks from a strategic standpoint. and last time i checked roses aren't poisonous people even eat their petals! i think you just like being negative :p

Now that you mention it.... good point.

I guess it's that the franchise is still more popular with the boys than the girls. When I went to a pokemon distribution event, even though there were people of different genders and ages, the majority of the participants were young boys/teenagers. From their point of view, anything too "girly" is probably unfavorable.

I think introducing the Fairy type is a great idea because it balances out the type chart a bit as Mr. Masuda himself said, and it also is a great way to attract more female fans to the franchise.

I hope we get a Fairy/Dragon Pokemon but I wouldn't hold my breath since it's still a new type. Maybe next Gen?

Kawaii cuteness is big in Japan anyway, it's not just a female thing. Think about Moe anime, it's extremely popular with guys even though it's cutesy. American guys can be hung up on girly cutesy stuff all they want but the Japanese market is probably loving it.

I think a lot of American guys like it so long as it isn't pointed out to them that they're enjoying something "girly." Which is the real scandal of the fairy type. God forbid the game be even more explicit with players about that Jigglypuff they've loved since they were a kid. So long as the fairy references were on the peripheral they could have kept themselves in "dramatic fanfic writing" denial, but a type is too in your face.

There's a significant base in the US of guys (usually college students) who absolutely love moe and anything related.
(Surprisingly, not me. I don't really enjoy moe-blob centered series unless there's substance as well)
They also crossover a bit with the also rather large college student demographic that plays Pokemon.

There are plenty of American guys that will fully admit to liking cutesy things (Bronies anyone?) with complete security in their masculinity and straightness, I'm just saying it's not really widespread in our culture for boys to be accepting of it. In Japan it's a major marketing gimmick towards people of all ages and genders. Generally speaking, the Japanese are crazy for cute.

If I saw a rose get up and walk away from me I'd think it pretty mystical. If, however, I saw that as I was walking around with a mouse that produces electricity or a turtle that can shoot out an endless supply of water I would think nothing of a living plant. Typing from a strategic standpoint means nothing compared to typing from a thematic standpoint. The thing has poison point, it's obvious the typing comes from the fact roses have thorns. A lot of grass types are part poison even though the plant that's their inspiration aren't poisonous. Weeds and pitcher plants aren't poisonous either.

Speaking of mystic roses, I'm reminded of that magic rose from Beauty and the Beast - which was also a curse. So Roserade as Fairy/Poison?

I'm pretty cool with fairy type but... how come CleFAIRY hasn't been announced as fairy yet? Or did I just miss it?

About the " the moe-moe of fairy type will be popular with males" thing... I guess it makes sense, but its not like Gardevior needed any more attention like that. Ahem.

imo the fairy type still need conversions.

There was a rumor on another page about strengths/weaknesses.

So fairy beats dragon atm.
Any other? If I recall right the rumor is it beats dark too.
Steel and Physic resist fairy.

Any comments on this/other strengths/weaknesses.

The rumor (again, same source that predicted it all):

Fairy is SE against Dragon (excellent), Dark (why) and Fighting (yay!)
Is resisted by Fire and Psychic (good good, but no Ice :C)
Immune to Dragon
Weak to Poison and Steel

Nothing on if Fairy resists anything other than its single immunity.

The pokebeach source is likely incomplete on the type effectiveness. I have to believe that GF will have developed it in a half-way intelligent manner.

Personally, I don't like cuteness. I probably wouldn't like pokémon except for the nostalgia factor: it's the franchise that made me a gamer. But just because testosterone has made my frontal lobe as an adult have a non-responsive attitude towards infant-like stimuli doesn't mean I need to have some issue with it. I just don't have a strong maternal instinct. I feel the tie of femininity to the fairy type is totally fine, and it's bizarre to me that males are complaining about the presence of a tiny feminine element in a world that caters infinitely to the male sex; I will use fairies if I think their stats, abilities and move pools are interesting. And other rational men and women like me will do the same.
