The Official Travelog + Let's Play Thread

Played a few hours this morning, as I don't know how much time I'll have to play over the weekend. Completed Lana and Kiawe's trial, midway through Mallow's trial right now. Wish these three trials weren't streamlined as much, I want to take my time and enjoy the beauty of Akala Island.
Had my first fight with Gladion. That boy is one tough cookie. I happened upon his apartment and went in. Loved how his immediate reaction was "Get out!".
Gosh Lana was adorable too. How she was all like "I had hoped it was some strapping young swimmer," like gurl, me too XD.
I also caught my 3rd and 4th party members, Rockruff (who just evolved into a Lycanroc), and Fomantis. Pichu also evolved into Pikachu which I am extremely happy about, just waiting to him to learn Thunderbolt now so I can use the Thunderstone I found and have my little pancake loving Raichu XD.

Probably won't update again until I get back to my computer in a couple days, good luck on your journeys everyone!

Yeah okay, I am not happy with how misleading the demo was. Ten Carat Hill is near Kukui's lab, yet the demo depicted the cave directly north of Hau'oli City in a completely different route. I'm not impressed.

At the second island now. My team is coming along very nicely. I've now since gotten Rockruff and Mudbray on my team. Still have Trumbeak, but I still intend to replace it later. I'm going to focus on grinding for the next little bit until my team's all balanced, and hopefully I won't have nearly as much trouble as before.

At the ranch near the beginning of Akala. Game is going really well so far. Beat Hala with my Cutiefly, which was fun, but too easy.
Team (including possible rotation) is looking like:
-Dartrix
-Pikachu
-Cutiefly
-Mankey
-Alolan Diglett
-Alolan Persian
-Eevee

Thought about using a Rockruff for a while, but ultimately decided against it. Probably gonna evolve Eevee into either Umbreon or Vaporeon, though whether I end up using it for the rest of the game is unknown. It'll probably stick in rotation though.

I got "Magnememe" from Wondertrade. I've already used Magnemite in previous games but I think I might give this little guy a shot. Wait ughh, it has Magnet Pull. Eh, I can make it work.

Finally made it through the first trial. I'm not a huge fan of the concept, but it'll probably grow on me as the game advances. I really cannot fault Game Freak for trying something different. Felicia the Litten is now a Torracat and I captured an Alolan Meowth (named him Heathcliff) who is now a Persian. Still anticipating adding Rockruff. I am playing this game as blind as I can so I have no idea when I'll come into contact with one of those cute puppies. XD Barely on Route 3, and I still hate Zubat! The fact that they can call for help doesn't make dealing with them any more fun.

I really love the music in this game! Very catchy stuff!

About to attempt Lana's trial. She's a water type specialist and of course I have no electric or grass types. I'm having a lot of fun with the gift Munchlax and the Normal type Z-moves.

Okay, I'm now at the second island in Moon before taking another break. Specifically, the ranch. I battled Hau again (man, I LOVE his battle theme, so upbeat and catchy, so he's always fun to battle). Oh, also, I finally managed to catch two of my permanent teammates: a male Grubbin, now Charjabug, named Sparkplug (who I totally missed in early gameplay and had to retrace my steps, though I didn't mind much, as it meant I could use a different type of Ball to catch it), and a female Rockruff named Sveta (based off the Golden Sun character). My Munchlax also finally evolved into a Snorlax upon reaching the second island, but I've since boxed him. Still got Eddy the Meowth, as he's been using Pickup quite often, nabbing me lots of goodies on a pretty regular basis. Plan to keep him unevolved until he gets Pay Day, as well as get as much out of Pickup as possible. Still also have Bazooka the Trumbeak, but I plan to box him after he evolves, as I'm not really getting much enjoyment out of him. Plus I now have way too many Mons with a weakness to Rock, so I have to do something about that before facing Olivia. Meowzma the Torracat has had his affection maxed, but unlike Amie, I actually did it more gradually this time around, as Refresh does increase the longevity of the affection-building mini-game more efficiently, which I've come to like. No longer just abuse-early-than-ignore like Amie, which is nice. Plus brushing and grooming my Pokemon is far more fun and natural than just burning time playing bland mini-games and petting to no end. Oh, and I got a really big YES moment today: the first wild Pokemon I encountered on the second island was a female Eevee. How lucky is that!? Though she made me work for her, as she kept summoning other Eevee through SOS battles. I'm starting to really despise SOS battles, as they drain a lot of PP and battery power with the constant calling of allies, especially when you're trying to catch that Pokemon. That's probably my one real complaint about the games. But so far I'm enjoying the games, though I could do without the constant SOS battles. Really, it would've been better if they just kept that exclusive to Totem Battles, but I'm not GF so I can't control it. Carbink are also becoming bit of a bane, as my team is either weak to it or its defenses are just too high. But I finally got a new weapon against them: my Meowzma has a Steel-type Hidden Power, so you can bet I slapped my new Hidden Power TM on him. Time to cut some gems in revenge. *grins evilly*

In Sun, I haven't gotten much further since last time. Mero the Popplio has evolved into a Brionne, and I did a little trade-back with myself to fully evolve an Abra I caught into an Alakazam, so now I've got a bruiser for the trial. Still doing a bit of grinding, however, as my levels are a bit lower than my first time around (though, in reality, I've got more evolved Pokemon this time, such as Brionne, Alakazam, and Butterfree, so I guess that balances it out to a degree). I still can't take Team Skull seriously, but at least they're not as pathetic as Team Flare, who I REALLY couldn't take seriously. That'll probably change soon enough, but we'll see.

I've just defeated Ilima for the second time and currently taking a break at the Hau'oli city Pokemon center with the current team being Brionne, Trumbeak, Growlithe, Magnemite, Alolan Grimer, and Makuhita; heading to Akala Island next.

I'm coming along nicely in Sun, current party is:

Although Greninja wasn't in my original post that had my projected party, and I tend to stay away from using event/gift Pokemon, particularly those not with my OT or received through normal gameplay, I caved when it came to Greninja. All anime jokes or references aside, Greninja truly is one of my favorite Pokemon (after Empoleon, of course!), and I bonded with mine in Y, so being able to use this variant of Greninja feels like a continuation of my Kalos journeys, like, I feel like I took Greninja from Kalos to Alola but left the rest of my Pokemon in the PC, like Ash does but with Pikachu. However, I do not plan on using him the entire way through, just for now while I have the empty spaces in my party. Same story for the event Munchlax, who I haven't been using much for fighting, just as a tank/wall while I revive/heal other Pokemon in some of those tough totem battles!

I've completed everything on Melemele and Akala islands, so I'm done with four trials and two kahunas, I love the game so far, the pacing is way different from what we're used to but it's a much needed change that I was skeptical of at first but I'm in love with these games!

Also, progress on the Zygarde Cube, I have 23/100 pieces. I have all but one piece from Melemele island, since there's so many the only way I can keep track of the pieces is by clearing one island at a time and knowing I won't have to return to that one for more Zygarde parts. I love how Sun/Moon technically let you break the six Pokemon rule by having both the Zygarde Cube and RotomDex on you, lol.

On the way to the festival I caught myself a Pikipeck and a Grubbin that I named Eleast to have temperately until I find the Pokemon I want to have in my team. During training, Andre is growing fast and she's at level 10 now. During festival, Andre took care of Hau's Pokemon vary well and doesn't really need help from Eleast. I might keep Eleast in rotation, but I don't know yet at this point. Once at the school I started battling the kids at the school with little trouble despite only having three Pokemon so far, Audre is doing most of the work and Eleast got knocked out. After beating all but one student, I petted Audre, gave her high fives, and gave her Pokebeans, she loved Pokebeans so much that she did a back flip and posed! Once we reached the teacher, Eleast took care of the magnetmite all thanks to her mud slap since my team can't take care of the Pokemon, Audre took care of the Alolain Meowth. After the battle, I found out that Eleast it dirty, I don't know how she got dirty in the school. Maybe they need to clean the school better.

I just defeated the Totem Salazzle and it's ally Salandit. I've never been more thankful for accidentally using Munchlax's metronome, which randomly made Munchlax use earthquake taking both Pokemon out. Considering that Salazzle took out all my other Pokemon.

These are gonna be long so I'm using spoiler boxes.

I actually got the game yesterday, but since I got Sun, I wanted it to be daytime when I first played, so I started this morning. Unfortunately, due to college, I won't be able to play again until I go home on Wednesday. I was fortunate enough to get 2 good hours of playtime in though and it was great.

First of all the opening cinematic was great. I'm really interested in Lillie and the Aether Foundation now. Also, starting the game with the character about to move before following up with a 3 month timeskip was really interesting. These games seem like they'll really be focusing a lot on the story. So many major events happened before we even choose our starter.

And speaking of that, I loved the little scene of the starter selection. It's funny because choosing the starter Pokemon is supposed a be a very special event, but up until now its never really felt like one.

With all of that said, I ended up going with Litten as my starter despite the fact that Popplio my favorite of the 3. I went with Litten mainly for two reasons. 1. The main character wears Litten shoes with the default outfit. I'm serious, that was a factor of me choosing Litten. 2. The second reason is because when Sun/Moon we first announced, I jokingly said to my sister, "I hope there's a fire-type cat Pokemon in the new games. It could be called Abysunnyan." And I bet you can guess what I nicknamed him:p

I also acquired a female Pikipek who I named BeBe, a male Ledyba named Mr. Chu, and a male Yungoos named Stephen. I'm only using BeBe and Mr. Chu for battling now, but neither will be on my final team. I'll be keeping them until I can get my first team members so Abysunnyan doesn't get overleveled. Also, with that said, maybe its just me, but the game actually feels a bit more difficult. My Pokemon were actually underleved for the longest. It wasn't until I got to the school and got the EXP. Share that I was on par with my opponents. (I think my main 3 are all level 9 now.) Then again, I also haven't been doing any unnecessary battling or capturing which could add more EXP, so there's that too. But I also feel that the AI is much better. It was only in my second battle where an opponent just spammed Tail Whip for an entire battle. All other opponents have been pretty good in their tactics. The school teacher nearly destroyed me with her STAB Bite Meowth. Not to mention the last student with his Grimer poisoning everything:/But with that, I want to mention how great PokeRefresh is. I love being able to groom by Pokemon and heal them of status conditions without items. Also, the backgrounds reflecting where I actually am just makes the game seem that much more real. It's great.

After that, I finally made it to Hau'loi City and was able to do the only thing I set out to do in my playtime today, CUSTOMIZE:) First let's start with the goods. I didn't change either Serena or Calem's hair in XY so today was my first time doing it. I was pleased to see so many hair options available so early on. I thought they'd only have a few at first and make the rest obtainable later, but it seemed like everything was available up front, which was nice. I got a Romatic Tuck (the same style seen in the Japanese customization trailer) dyed dark-brown (I choose the fourth character option so it started off black) with no bangs. I also put in green eye contacts which I plan on changing to purple in the future. Now for the clothes. Once again, I am disappointed. I get it, different locations= different local fashions. But c'mon. No skirts or dressed at the first store again? Not even one? That's really disappointing. With all the different options, I thought they'd be spread out a bit better this time, but no. I got like 6 different options for shorts and shirts, but not a single skirt. There were also no shoes or bags, but there 2 two hats...neither of which I could wear due to the hairstyle I got so I'm hat-less as of now which I don't really mind. I really hope the next store has skirts available. I really don't want to be stuck with just shorts and pants for half the game again:/ Anyway, rant aside, of the billions of tops and shorts available, I got a red floral top (I think) and some pink shorts along with some pink socks. Also, I do like how they update your passport when you change your appearance.

And that's as far as I got. Overall these games are starting off great. I can't wait to get back to it.

I am making my way to the fire trial. My starters have evolved once. I have my Bug/Electric which needs to evolve one more time. Native bird has evolved once and hatched an Eevee.

So far, I've finished up to the Water trial... Wishiwashi took a _long_ time to beat - it summoned an Alomomola that kept Heal Pulsing it repetitively. >.<

Afterwards, I stayed to catch some water pokemon - and the most shocking thing I've ever encountered in a Pokemon game occured. A Dewpider appeared, of which I had never ever seen its design - It was the first time I actually learned of the existance of the Pokemon, as I only checked Pokemon that were offically revealed by the Pokemon Company itself - and no other spoilers.

...It was shiny.

Wow was this an interesting first impression of it! O_O

Nice lucky find! :D

Man I'm slow. Well got the game yesterday but couldn't start it up till much later since I had work.

That said, I really like how your house is actually in the outskirts of the first Route. Great ocean view and all. SM Mom is full of personality (well everyone is, the game damn well feels like a legit RPG due to placements of locations and what not thus far) and I'm lovin' that running gag with her and the unboxing.

I really wish GF got with the times and gave us the power to skip cutscenes... They're great but when I have to constantly reload my save at the now busted bridge to escort Lillie back and pray I get a female Popplio yeah... (In my initial start-up it was 30 minutes of reloading followed by me giving up and going to sleep then waking up [had a few hours before needing to get to work] and spending another hour and twenty something minutes till RNG finally cut me a break)

When I finally got the ball rolling, me and Excellion the Popplio began our travels and various uses of Poke Refresh. We caught a few allies along the way but screw them; they are not in my planned "best six" or within my rotation. Though Wingull helped me quite a bit against that Lass and HER Wingull (yeah, take that. Confusion not so fun when its on the other foot, huh?) so I appreciate that.

If that kid was any indication was indication Grubbin should be somewhere in the area? I want a Grubbin...

Now we journey towards the Trainer's School. Did I mention legit RPG landmark placement? Cuz, yeah it is.

Okay, got a bit further in both games, but I didn't realize how low both of my batteries were, so now I have to let both 3DS's recharge. Man, I'm not gonna be happy for a bit, as when I get bored, I get dangerous. But in any case, moving on.

In Moon I'm now on the threshold of Lana's trial, but I want to do some prepping for it. So, along with Sparkplug the Charjabug, I decided to catch a Grass-type. Specifically, Fomantis. Got a girl Fomantis and named her Violet. Not sure if she'll be sticking around as a permanent teammate or not, but I might use her in a rotation tactic down the road if she does well in the trial. Oh, I also got to battle Gladion. I LOVE his battle theme, and he was a good challenge. He certainly is a large step-up from the loony Team Skull grunts, yet they had the nerve to diss him. Type: Null should whoop their sorry butts for those remarks, as Gladion actually proved to be a viable threat, unlike them. But I'm doing some grinding, getting Violet up to speed with the rest of the posse, before taking on Lana's trial.

In Sun I completed Ilina's trial. I also got a new teammate: KO Joe the Crabrawler. He proved to be extremely helpful in the trial, effectively whooping those Yungoos and Gumshoos with ease. Mero the Brionne took care of business with Team Numbskull... I mean Team Skull without breaking a sweat. Then came the Totem battle. I decided to use Mero for this and have KO Joe act as backup, since she knew Disarming Voice, it would allow her to hit both Totem Gumshoos and the Yungoos it calls into battle in one attack. Used a Work Up to boost its power first, but she managed to beat the Totem Pokemon (though she did get a nasty critical hit Bite attack from Gumshoos, which knocked off a sizable chunk of her HP, though I returned the favor in kind with Water Gun). Got the Z-Crystal and started to catch some of the Pokemon in the cavern before my battery started dying. First battle was very, very annoying: Zubat that kept using SOS tactics. I must've battled seven Zubats before finally catching one of them. Poor KO Joe, he had to suffer through all those annoying bats constantly calling for help. It's official, I really hate SOS battles. If they kept it to Totem battles then I'd be fine with it, but it losses some of its value in regular battles, especially when you're trying to whittle away at a certain Pokemon to catch it. Oh, well, can't control it, just have to be lucky enough to get the hits in fast and chuck the ball just as fast.

My Munchlax finally evolved into Snorlax. I'm about to challenge Olivia, the Kahuna of Akala island. I captured a Lurantis to have a grass type on my team, and a Wingull (bleh) for a water type. I'm hoping to run into a more exciting water type. I never thought I'd actively use a Snorlax on my team, but he's actually been my best fighter aside from Trumbeak.

Just finished Kiawe's trial and now I'm training up my Mudbray so it can soon evolve into Mudsdale. Before this, I did Lana's trial, caught Pa'u Oricorio (I looove this one), discovered Dewpider and bred my Rowlet. I was very surprised to see that I can hatch a Rowlet egg in about 1 minute with Tauros Charge (holding B) and Flame Body.
