^ may be interested to know that language patterns can be predicted and that within another few years, language may be 'regularized' naturally. Although, commonly used verbs are probably not going to see much change, if any. But if talking habbits like online-speak cross into real life on a regular basis (they certainly already have), then I think we're all doomed.

^ May be surprised to know thousands of existing languages will become extinct because there aren't enough people speaking them.

Somehow, Star Trek's standard language doesn't seem so far-fetched. Is it a good thing?

< Always happy to introduce thought-provoking content into this thread. Not that it will last as long as a mayfly.

^ isn't the pissed off owner of a ginkgo tree pinned car.

Well, yeah. Given time many languages will die off, or just cease common use much like Aramaic or Latin. [though it's still used as a guide for etymology and used heavily in the medical and scientific community for universal names].

I know that in most foreign countries, English is taught as a secondary language and that experience has taught me that some foreigners can actually speak better English than I can. The point is, the fluid use of English is much more global thus has a greater impact on the evolution of the language as a whole but effectively pushes aside smaller languages as the world strives to achieve easy global communication.

Though, I must say Mandarin might be a competing global language to contend with in the next few years since it has a wide user base that supports it.

^May or may not think anarcho-communism is the best economic-political philosophy in the world

There's... a... mathematical equation for the decay of the past tense of English irregular verbs. o_O

My curiosity lies in how well we (and any Anglophone, for that matter) would take it if whoever exactly looks over language in the U.S. (besides maybe lexicographers, there may or may not be; maybe I just keep thinking of l'Académie française...) decided to completely "forcefully" regularize all forms all irregular words, frequency of use being irrelevant. That's not only, for example, making (not "letting become," but making) the past tense of "to be" into "beed," but making the present tense "I/you/we/they be, he/she/it bes." *shudders*

You know, I think I remember a guy on either The Daily Show or The Colbert Report (probably the latter) who talked about that. I think he was trying to document them. He mentioned one or two languages that currently have only one living speaker (I think one was in Australia).
