About This Guide​

What is this, exactly?
This is intended to be a semi-comprehensive guide to the various English- and Japanese-language home video and audio CD releases for the Pokémon movies and related merchandise, with as much information as possible obtained through independent research performed by me. Included in this guide as part of that goal are extensive data about each release, including both basic-level data (release dates, track names and times, chapter titles, etc.) relevant for everyday use and deep-level data (codecs and encodings used, disc information, etc.) that could be relevant for archivists, historians, or simply anyone interested in technical details. Also included are extensive reviews for several well-known releases covering things such as picture and audio quality, ease of playback on different regions than they were originally intended to be sold in, the existence or non-existence of subtitles (dub or otherwise), and overall value relative to both their current going price and other releases.

Why does this even exist?
To make a long story short in the plainest and most polite way possible: the state of the fandom’s record of all the various Pokémon media releases in general is… complicated, to say to least. This guide is an attempt to address that.

As far as the long story goes:

The English-language Pokémon media releases have always been something of a mess to keep track of. Notwithstanding their actual quality — which can be charitably called "variable" — the many, many companies who have been responsible for producing and distributing English-language Pokémon media over the years have tended to do so at a breakneck pace (especially movies 4 through 7 under the Miramax umbrella, but the other movies have had their moments). Additionally, the feature sets of said releases have had a depressingly strong tendency to be ambiguously advertised or even flat-out falsely advertised (for a particularly salient example of the latter, consider the infamously sought-after Pokémon Collection, or movies 4 through 7 on Blu-ray for the uninitiated; you’re most certainly not getting 5.1 DTS surround sound there). This combination has made it a nightmare for us in the fandom to archive everything, let alone with any certainty of accuracy without spending our hard-earned money on multiple releases that may not even be worth the price (not to mention the time and effort required to actually analyze them all). And if keeping track of what to expect from all of the countless releases out there is difficult for us archivists to do, then imagine what it must be like for someone just looking to buy a copy of their favorite Pokémon movie without feeling like something is missing — or worse, that they’ve been completely ripped off — in the process.

The result of all of the above is a wild west of English-language Pokémon media releases where a support system for the discerning buyer is, as of late, rather dire. It’s a situation that even the fandom’s great worker bees of archival (Dogasu, PocketMonsters.net, and the like) have — for all of their often extensive efforts — been unable to address completely, let alone the rest of the internet with far fewer resources than they possess. I myself have only but so many resources at hand to address this, but I hope that my contributions with this guide will make things at least slightly more helpful for those wanting to find quality English-language Pokémon releases (to the greatest extent that it’s possible).

Now, as for the situation with Japanese-language Pokémon media releases, that collection has at least been a much simpler task to catalog than its English-language equivalent, thanks in no small part to pretty much only one company being responsible for distribution of most major releases (Media Factory in the past, Shogakukan today). Plus, there’s the fact that said releases tend to be accompanied by press releases, which are happily and dutifully covered by our fandom’s aforementioned worker bees of archival for a wider audience to have easy and immediate access to.

That said, I’ve found that information about the Japanese releases outside of those sources is scarce for many of them and practically non-existent for many others, with extensive reviews on them or definitive confirmations of their exact contents and specifications being especially illusive. I believe that the main problem here with the Japanese releases is… well, just that: they’re the Japanese releases, while the overwhelming majority of the Western fandom doesn’t, naturally, live in Japan. And so with that, there’s the obvious import barrier for those without tons of free money to spend on CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays (not to mention the time spend to actually find them with the comparatively limited resources available to foreigners buying from overseas). And with the language and cultural barriers that separate the Western fandom from the Japanese fandom topping all of that off, it’s no surprise that our absolute knowledge of the Japanese releases compared to at least the more major English-language releases is kind of… muddy, I’d call it. Not completely non-existent, but muddy. I hope that this guide will help de-muddy the waters somewhat and also help de-mystify the aura that arguably exists around some of the more expensive and high-profile Japanese releases especially. That way, people can more objectively know what they really have to offer compared to their Western equivalents and make more informed decisions about whether or not acquiring them is truly worth the often substantial money and effort required to do so.

Why should I trust you?
I’ve been a super-passionate fan of the Pokémon anime since the very beginning, and as such, I’m someone who truly cares about getting stuff right. And I have the resources to help make that happen in the form of my access to a growing collection of Pokémon movie releases: all physical and all legit. Some items are from my personal collection that I intend to keep forever, while others are those I’ve obtained specifically for the purpose of adding to this guide. In any case, I know all about everything that I own and you can trust me to make as authoritative of a guide to it all as possible with the knowledge and resources that I have, and with the genuine love and care that I have for it all.

Additionally, I’ve also always been super-passionate about technology, and I’ve learned a lot of things over the years that are directly relevant to this guide. I consider myself to be an expert when it comes to video and audio technology standards, and I know how they all work… and more importantly, how all they work for you and any Pokémon movie releases that you might be interested in. I would never want to pay a potentially significant sum of money for a rare or valued release without knowing exactly what I’m getting, and I’ll make sure that you know as much as possible about what you’re buying so that you can do the same, no matter what kind of info you’re looking for specifically. And finally, I’m a real detail freak not just when it comes to technology but when it comes to pretty much anything in general; few things escape my notice when I pay enough attention to it. If there’s interesting or important something to be found in these releases, then I’ll be sure to find it!

Here are a few other things that you should know:

• This guide will be largely US- (and to a lesser extent Japan-) centric, and may be of limited use to you if you live elsewhere and are primarily interested in other countries’ releases. This is simply because I happen to live in the United States, and thus US-based discs are much easier — and less expensive! — for me to obtain than say, your average UK or Australian disc (let alone those from EU countries). And while Japan-based discs are obviously a challenge, I’ve gone out of my way to obtain those anyway because — with said discs being the sole legitimate way to access the original Japanese versions of Pokémon anime media the overwhelming majority of the time — there’s an incentive to learn more about them and have access to them here in the West. While this doesn’t mean that some releases from other countries won’t be covered here if the opportunity presents itself to me, you should expect most of the coverage here to focus more on US- and Japan-based releases; please proceed here accordingly.
• The guide covers media as released by official producers and distributors only; or in other words: bootlegs and counterfeits are not covered here. Aside from the murky legality of dealing with the latter and the whole "support the official releases" philosophy, it’s enough of a task for me to catalog and review the "official canon" without having to dive into a whole other world of releases as well. As such, I’m afraid that you’re on your own with the latter, at least as far as this guide is concerned.

And finally, a word about sources, and about "common knowledge":
I define "common knowledge" as information that is clear-cut and unambiguous, widely disseminated, easily accessible, verifiable, and whose primary source is always an official source of some sort (as opposed to, say, a fansite reporting on it). In the context of this guide, things that I’d consider to be "common knowledge" include:

• Release dates as expressed on press releases, or on the packaging of Audio CDs released in Japan,
• Movie and Audio CD runtimes (both total length and individual track times in the case of the latter) as expressed on the packaging or disc artwork,
• Untranslated Audio CD track names and associated info (such as composers, arrangers, artists, performers, etc.) as expressed on press releases, packaging, liner notes, or disc artwork,
• Any region codes applied, video and audio codecs used, and types of discs used as expressed on the packaging,
• Catalog numbers and ISBNs as expressed on the packaging.

Things that I wouldn’t consider to be "common knowledge" in the context of this guide include:

• Any of the above that’s determined or calculated by a computer program or some other manual method, and is either said or implied to be done as such,
• Any of the above that relies on a translation that can’t be accurately or reliably done via something like Google Translate, or that can’t be extracted through either rudimentary knowledge of relevant Japanese terminology (分 for "minutes", etc.) or translation of common English-based loanwords (ステレオ for "stereo", etc.),
• Any of the above that, at the time of publication, isn’t widespread or archived well enough in unambiguous form for the average reader to recognize easily, and could thus be prone to errors and/or mis-remembrances across existing sources reporting on them (basically, anything that lacks images or extensive corroborations for them; DVD chapter titles, disc menu designs, Blu-ray disc region compatibilities, and the existence or non-existence of any "swag" associated with certain releases are especially prone to this).

Glossary​

Audio CD: No introduction needed. Contains lossless audio in stereo sound (see "lossless audio" below for details). Can be played on almost anything, although game consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and newer notably can not play them.

Bit rate: The amount of data dedicated to generated any given video or audio signal, usually measured in kilobits, megabits, or gigabits per second (from lowest to highest). The higher the bit rate, the higher the picture and sound quality (usually, but not always, depending on the source). However, higher bit rates require more disc space, which means that they — and in turn, picture and sound quality — vary wildly per disc, depending on how many movies or TV episodes are present on a single disc or how long each of them are. As a general rule, the more movies or TV episodes are present on a single disc, the less likely that the picture and sound quality will be very good.

Blu-ray Disc: A more recent disc format for home video releases that supports high-definition video for sharper and more detailed images on a modern TV, as well as lossless audio. Tends to be quite a bit more rare and expensive than DVDs when it comes to Pokémon releases, especially Japanese releases. Can be played on a Blu-ray player, including many game consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and newer, but can not be played on a DVD player.

Compression artifacts: An undesirable visual effect that appears on discs with a low bit rate (or in other words, are "too compressed") or that are otherwise badly encoded. Usually shows up as "blockiness" on fast-moving or visually complex scenes.

Dolby Digital: An audio format found on DVDs and Blu-rays that can provide anything from plain stereo sound to full-fledged surround sound. Pretty much every sound system in existence supports it. All Pokémon DVDs use Dolby Digital, but not all have surround sound. Some Pokémon Blu-rays also use Dolby Digital, but lossless audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA are greatly preferable on Blu-ray, albeit not essential (please see "lossless audio" below for more info).

Dolby TrueHD: A high-quality lossless audio format found only on Blu-rays. Most newer sound systems support it, but if yours doesn’t, you’ll usually (but not always) get Dolby Digital instead. See "lossless audio" below for more details.

DTS: An audio format found on DVDs and Blu-rays, and an alternative to Dolby Digital. Is almost always in surround sound and supposedly sounds better than Dolby Digital in most cases. No Pokémon DVDs are known to use DTS, but if you have a Pokémon Blu-ray with a lossless DTS-MA track and your sound system doesn’t support it, you’ll get DTS instead. Almost all sound systems support DTS and it will almost certainly sound very good, even compared to lossless (please see "lossless audio" below for more info).

DTS-MA: A high-quality lossless audio format found only on Blu-rays, and an alternative to Dolby TrueHD. Most newer sound systems support it, but if yours doesn’t, you’ll get DTS instead. See "lossless audio" below for more details.

DVD-Video: An older disc format for home video releases that’s still relevant today, especially for Pokémon releases. Always in standard definition, which will look worse than HD on a modern TV, although animation tends to suffer less from the lower resolution than live-action content. Can be played on any DVD or Blu-ray player, including many game consoles such as the PlayStation 2 and its successors and any Xbox with a disc drive.

Fullscreen: An image with a viewing area matching the old "tube" TVs that existed before the adaption of HD television standards. The Pokémon TV anime was produced natively in this format up until the middle of the Sinnoh series, but the movies (and later TV seasons) never were. "Fullscreen" releases of the latter therefore cut information from the original image to fit what’s now an obsolete TV format, resulting in a more cramped image with "pillarboxes" on each side of the screen on modern TVs. Avoid these if you can!

Lossless audio: In layman’s terms, this is basically the highest quality audio possible, completely authentic to the original source. That said, lossless audio is only as good as said source, which ultimately matters more. Almost always on Blu-ray, where it is either called Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA, or occasionally PCM. When on DVD, it will always be called PCM. For an idea of the difference, think of listening straight from a CD (lossless) vs. listening to an MP3 file (not lossless). That said, unless you have a decent sound system or are wearing headphones, you’re honestly not likely to be able to tell the difference between lossless audio and regular Dolby Digital or DTS.

Mini-CD: A smaller version of the Audio CD — measuring at 8cm (3.1 inches) vs. the 12cm (4.7 inches) of standard Audio CDs — that stores approximately 20 minutes of music. They were most commonly used for Japanese single releases, in which case they were typically issued in long “tanzaku” sleeve cases. Also known as “CD single” or “CD3” discs (the latter after their 3.1-inch length). Most CD players with a slot-loading drive — notably car systems and the PlayStation 3 Slim — are unable to accept these discs, although most tray-loading CD players can.

NTSC: Refers to the analog-era color standard used in North America, Japan, South Korea, and parts of South America before the adaption of HD television standards. Relevant only for DVDs played on an older "tube" TV, in which case a NTSC-encoded DVD will play just fine on TVs originally sold in those aforementioned regions (assuming that the DVD region is also compatible), but will have trouble playing on TVs sold elsewhere, most notably Australia, most of Europe, and parts of South America, Africa, and Asia which used the PAL color format instead. Otherwise, will play fine on any modern TV across the world.

Obi strip: A paper "strip" folded along the left side of a CD case that may contain anything from barcodes, album information, illustrations, and advertising for other releases, among other others. Found almost exclusively on Japanese releases, and commonly found on other media there (they’re known as "spine cards" on older CD-based video game releases). Considered quite valuable on the used market, so if you have a CD with an obi strip, don’t get rid of it! They’re easily storable on top of the front booklet inside the CD case.

PAL: Refers to the analog-era color standard used in Australia, most of Europe, and parts of South America, Africa, and Asia before the adoption of HD television standards. Relevant only for DVDs played on an older "tube" TV, in which case a PAL-encoded DVD will play just fine on TVs originally sold in those aforementioned regions (assuming that the DVD region is also compatible), but will have trouble playing on TVs sold elsewhere, most notably North America, Japan, South Korea, and parts of South America which used the NTSC color format instead. Otherwise, will play fine on any modern TV across the world.

Region-free: Refers to discs that can be played in any DVD or Blu-ray player sold anywhere in the world; a very useful quality for imports. No Pokémon DVD releases are known to be region-free, but some Pokémon Blu-ray releases are. However, it is often difficult to determine for sure which releases are region-free due to incorrect labeling, with some movies claiming to be exclusive to one region that are actually region-free.

SDH: Short for "subtitles for the deaf and hearing-impaired". Refers to a specific form of subtitles which include descriptions of sound effects in addition to the character dialogue found in regular subtitles for a more comprehensive subtitle experience, essential for those who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or otherwise have trouble processing audio. Not necessarily present on all Pokémon releases with subtitles, and those do have it present almost always have it in English only.

Stereo sound: No introduction needed. If a release doesn’t have surround sound, it uses this instead. It may or may not be lossless audio. The Pokémon TV anime is produced natively in stereo, and therefore, only stereo sound is available on its DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Surround sound: An audio standard while multiple speakers "surround" you at certain areas (such as behind you) within your viewing space, creating a more immersive listening experience. All Pokémon movies are produced in surround sound for their original theatrical presentations, specifically in a "5.1" format (a center speaker, two front speakers, two back speakers, and a low-frequency speaker). All Japanese movie DVD and Blu-ray releases include 5.1 surround sound, but many dub movie DVD and Blu-ray releases do not.

Widescreen: An image with a wide viewing area; exactly what it sounds like. Measured in width-to-height (width#:height#); the greater the ratio, the wider the image. All modern TVs are built to a widescreen standard (1.78:1, also known as 16:9), and all Pokémon movies are produced in a widescreen format (1.85:1) which said TVs can display for a more cinematic viewing experience. All Pokémon movie DVD releases in Japan and all Pokémon Blu-ray movie releases worldwide are in widescreen, but many dub movie DVD releases are unfortunately not (please see "fullscreen" above for more info).

1:33:1: A old television standard (also known as 4:3) used mostly on older "tube" TVs made before the adoption of HD television standards. Content presented in this format will show large black strips on the left and right sides of the screen on modern TVs (known as "pillarboxing") or be stretched horizontally to fill the screen instead. See "fullscreen" above for more details.

1:78:1: A television widescreen standard (also known as 16:9) used in all modern TVs. This is slightly less wide than the cinematic widescreen standard of 1.85:1, which means that some releases of the Pokémon movies — which are produced in 1.85:1 — may have narrow black strips on the top and bottom of the screen (known as "letterboxing") depending on your TV’s settings.

1.85:1: A cinematic widescreen standard used in several movie productions, including all of the Pokémon movies. This is slightly wider than the television widescreen standard of 1.78:1 (also known as 16:9), which means that some releases of the Pokémon movies may have narrow black strips on the top and bottom of the screen (known as "letterboxing") depending on your TV’s settings.
