Unova, such a vast realm. Full of surprises, love, war, evil, truth, ideals. The perfect place for a quest. The perfect place for The Quest.
The Quest. What is it? It is a journey along a road short-travelled by many, in search of a person. It is a journey of the mind, of the spirit. It is a calling. It is a discovery. It is an adventure.
Chapter One:
Max Park was born fifteen years ago, in Opelucid city. Max was a quiet boy usually. He didn't shout. He didn't boast. He was a kind, loving person. He wouldn't harm a Weedle if it landed on his face. He hadn't. He wouldn't. That was until he got onto a battlefield, however. There he was an inferno of rage, a blaze of passion. There Max's soul came from hiding. This is Max's story, sort of. Max's partner is his Pignite, a Pokémon that he got like so many others did, from Professor Ash of Nacrene City, his hometown. Max had been journeying for two months. He had earnt three gym badges, those of Nacrene City, Castelia City and Virbank City. He had had help along the way. He had enjoyed it. He was the top of his game.
Max stood on a battlefield, surrounded by spectators. People were watching him, and his opponent, an older boy. As far as Max was concerned the boy had no name, he thought as he wiped his brown, brushing away the brown fringe; he would only have Pokémon, getting in the way of his goal. In between the two battlers were two such Pokémon, Pignite and the other boy's Pokémon, Krokorok. The two Pokémon eyed each other suspiciously, waiting for a trainer to order a move. Both Pokémon were tired, panting on the field of the Battle Club.
"Pignite, use Flame Charge!" Max called. Pignite coated itself in Flame, kicking up dust from the ground. As Pignite geared up for the attack the Krokorok's trainer called out a command, which Max couldn't hear over the roaring flames. Pignite unleashed itself, flying at full pelt towards the Ground type. The Krokorok jumped in the air, diving down into the ground. It had used Dig. Pignite stumbled over the hole that the Krokorok had created, its flames going out. It rolled to a stop.
"Pignite, get up! Krokorok will be resurfacing soon!" Max commanded his Pokémon. The Pignite lifted itself to its feet. "Try to sense where it is." Pignite stood stock still, trying to find minute vibrations in the ground. Max and Pignite had spent a while doing this when training to fight Burgh's Dwebble. Pignite leapt in the air just as the ground exploded beneath it. Krokorok's head emerged from the hole created, gaping foolishly. Max ordered an Arm Thrust while at the same time Krokorok's trainer commanded the Dark-type to use Assurance. Krokorok's arm glowed a dark purple before lashing out at Pignite. The attack missed, held off by Pignite's own attack, Arm Thrust. Arm thrust hit once, twice, thrice. The Krokorok fell to the ground, fainted. A moustached man on the sidelines of the battle held up his hand.
"The winner of this battle is Max Park!" Don George declared. Max pumped his fist in joy, running over to Pignite.
"Good job Pignite, you deserve a rest," he whispered to the Fire Pig Pokémon before returning it to its Poké Ball. The throb of the battle seemed to decrease as Max's adrenaline was excreted through the pores of his body. The other boy came up to him, holding out a hand. The boy was shorter than Max, at 5'8".
"That was a great match, well done," the boy said. He held out a hand, and Max shook it. The boy was being a good loser, despite getting so close to the title.
"Thank you, I really enjoyed that battle," Max replied. "Let's go." The two boys walked out together, out of the stadium.
And, as we progress to the Semi-Finals, the amount of Pokémon recquired increases from two to three. An announcement overhead blared. The match-ups are: Max Park vs Imogen Miller and Sam Benson vs Michael Smith. That was for tomorrow. It was coming up to six o'clock, and he was worn out from three rounds of battling. He headed over to the cafeteria where he could grab some supper.
The cafeteria was packed full of Pokémon Trainers. all around the thirty two contestants for the Club Battle competition of Flocessy Town were gathered in the Pokémon Centre's dining hall, along with a few other passing Trainers. The room was full of long rectangular tables, at which were sat many of the trainers. A boy walked up to him.
"Hey Sam, I saw your battle against that John Unwin guy. Well done!" the boy said. His name was Dylan, and was Max's travelling partner. So, his opponent's name had been John.
"Thanks, it was luck more than anything. If that Assurance attack had hit Pignite it would have been over," Max replied. He was still sweating and was grateful of the warm air of the cafeteria. Dylan gestured at him.
"I've got your supper here, if you want it," he said to Max. Max looked at Dylan. He was very short, just topping 5'2", and he wore spectacles. He was a year younger than Max and he had taken the boy back in Castelia City. Dylan was the son of the Battle Company Chairman, and didn't particularly like battling. Max had taken the Battle Company by storm, even beating Dylan's father, and the Chairman had asked Max to take his son with him, so that he might become interested in battles. Dylan had entered the tournament, but been knocked out in the first round by a girl who had later been beaten by Sam Benson, one of the semifinalists. Max stepped out of the queue, walking over to the table at which a few trainers sat. There were two plates sitting opposite each other, which Max assumed were his and Dylan's. Max sat down, relieved to have something under his feet. He tucked into the sausage below.
"So, what do you know about this Imogen Miller girl?" Sam asked Dylan. He might as well prepare for his opponent.
"She's being raved about by all the commentators. People are calling her the "Blazing Girl". She won her first three rounds by storm, from the replays and matches I saw," Dylan explained. "Her main Pokémon's a Gothorita, and it's powerful." Gothorita were Psychic-types, and they'd have the advantage over the Fighting-type Pignite. Things were looking bad. Tomorrow, Max would have to face the competition favourite, with a type advantage. But that was tomorrow, today.
