ANNOUNCEMENTS
Six months ago, @Beth Pavell literarily launched us on a vocabulary venture of preposterous proportions with the Word of the Week! This Friday we'll be getting a round-up of every single one! Keep an eye out...

In case you missed it, The Review League was updated with a brand new monthly challenge: review fics that were in the Summer Awards! That's... quite a lot of fics, so go see if you can nab some extra points this month.

The cunning, clever @kintsugi has created a thread carefully crafted to combine creativity and competition! Check out word wars to push yourself in your reviewing and maybe win something in return!

NEW UPDATES

WORD OF THE WEEK
Once more, @Beth Pavell brings us another word of the week! And once again, he reminds us that he's a filth bag under that demure exterior.

Is’t possible? Today marks six months of Word of the Week, and to mark the occasion, I couldn’t help but select a slightly naughty word.

natiform (adj.): resembling or having the form of buttocks. [Wiktionary]

The natiform island rose coyly from a calm sea.

It’s an obscure word, apparently only ever used in a medical context and never in regard to the actual butt itself (Which is a shame). These days it’s pretty much obsolete, but much like callipygian, natiform is ripe for unsophisticated sophistication. So much for the dignity of Latin, natiform coming from natis (Rump or buttock). Which leaves only one question … which is more literary: natiform or ass-shaped?

With the buzz of the awards winding down, we've opened the discussion typically held among the judges to the public. Didn't judge this time but still feel like you have some feedback? Let us hear it! Any feedback on any aspect of the awards is welcome; we want to make sure this event is structured in the best interests of the community.

New Releases
@PetitEevee has started (and finished?) Creation of Kindness, a short work about the origins of Espeon.
@Rockium has started The Ties That Bind, a crossover between Pokemon and Pac-Man & The Ghostly Adventures.
@SeanWheeler has started Pokemon the Series: Plus and Minus, an anime-inspired counterpart to his Plus and Minus game fic!

New Chapters
Quite a bit this week! Let's look at what we have.

Completed stories!
@Jared DiCarlo has posted two new chapters (7 and 8) completed Fusion! A round of applause, if you'd please!

Word of the Week
As is tradition, @Beth Pavell brings us yet another word of the week: panjandrum! I'm sure we've all met someone like this at some point in our lives... I know I've met many like this and it's always amusing to watch them try to control my lifestyle and life in general.

panjandrum (n.): a person who has or claims to have a great deal of authority or influence [Oxford English Dictionary]

Mr Pinn was a panjandrum of the theatre.

Panjandrum sounds like one of those words imported into English from India, but panjandrum was actually coined in 1775 as a nonsense word in The Great Panjandrum Himself, by Samuel Foote. For some reason this word among many nonsense words stuck, especially when describing self-important or pretentious people. It also lent its name to an experimental rocket-propelled cart, designed by the British military for the assault on the Atlantic Wall.

That's it for this week!
I'd just like to thank everyone for their continued interaction with the community. Activity is through the roof and we're still going strong! Let's keep it up!

Word of the Week

widdershins (or withershins) (adv.): in a direction contrary to the sun’s course, considered as unlucky; anticlockwise. [Oxford English Dictionary]

At first, widdershins just sounds like a funny way of saying anticlockwise. But the word appears to float like an iceberg hiding a mass of folk belief underneath. The word derives from the German widersinnes, wider, “against”, and sin,“direction”. Widdershins is to run in the opposite direction to the sun, an unnatural and unlucky direction to some early religions. Remnants of that belief can be found in the many ways anticlockwise is associated with the Devil in Christian folklore.

deosil (adv.): clockwise [Wiktionary]

Unlike widdershins, deosil doesn’t have its roots in German, but Scottish Gaelic deiseil, which can also mean “southward”, “sunward”, “lucky” or “prepared”. In that way you can see the link with widdershins, or anticlockwise, as an unlucky direction. Supposedly these associations go back to Druidic culture, but deosil is probably best known to Wiccans, who give the spelling deosil instead of deasil.

Word of the Week
October is the month of Hallowe’en merchandise, and in time-honoured fashion, we’re riding the coat-tails of the season:

antic (adj.): grotesque or bizarre [Oxford English Dictionary]

Fetch me my rapier, boy. What dares the slave
Come hither, cover’d with an antic face

Antic is a favourite word of that strange and troubled man, H.P. Lovecraft, though he most often uses it in a more recognisable form, ‘antique’. Antic derives from the Italian antico, ancient, though in a 16th century context it was used to mean ‘grotesque’ for some reason. Lovecraft loved to use obsolete or archaic words, and indeed it appears in Shakespeare more than once.

Word of the Week
As is tradition, @Beth Pavell brings us yet another word of the week: flittermouse! This one sounds like a dumb modern name rather than an archaic term (think "danger noodle" for snake and "trash panda" for raccoon). I hope this one doesn't catch on again.

flittermouse (n.): old-fashioned term for a bat [Oxford English Dictionary]

It’s a charming little name, and one that describes the animals we know as bats very well. Anyone who has ever seen pipistrelle bats flying at dusk will know where the ‘flitter’ comes from, because their flickering, slightly frantic flight is quite unlike a bird’s. Flittermouse is now relegated to the realms of dialect words, though similar forms still exist in the Dutch vledermuys and German fledermaus.

That's it for this week!
I'd just like to thank everyone for their continued interaction with the community. Activity is through the roof and we're still going strong! Let's keep it up!

The new directory splits each category into their own posts for ease of browsing, as well as separates based on rating (making ratings compliance even more important!). An example of this already on display is Ambyssin's Guiding Light, where Vol. 2's entry includes a link to Vol. 1!

Word of the Week
Once more, @Beth Pavell brings us another word of the week! This one is everyone's favorite part about October!

Hallowe’en (n.): the night of 31st October, the eve of All Saints’ Day, often celebrated by children dressing up in frightening masks and costumes. Hallowe’en is thought to be associated with the Celtic festival Samhain, when ghosts and spirits were believed to be abroad. [Oxford English Dictionary]

The OED neatly summarises the history of Hallowe’en. Sometime during the Middle Ages in the British Isles, the old seasonal festival of Samhain became tangled up with All Saints’ Day, and the following All Souls’ Day on 2nd November. These Christian holidays were concerned with celebrating, and praying for, the dead – which explains why Hallowe’en is now the spookiest time of year.

With a heavy heart, I regret to inform you that this most sacred (and spooky) month of October is coming to a close. Tragic, I know. But that means November is around the corner, and with November comes another month of Workshop changes! In November, we've got two minor changes:
  • Review League: Offer 100+ words of feedback on how 2+ characters in an author's fic interact with each other and claim 2 extra bonus points.

Word of the Week
This year’s Hallowe’en theme is the VillainGarden, so there can only be one word for Hallowe’en week:

villain (n.): 1. (in a film, novel, or play) a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot.
2. Brit. informal: a criminal: the person or thing responsible for specified problems, harm, or damage. [Oxford English Dictionary]

I have played more good guys than villains.

Some people have been tricked by villains with false identity cards.

Villain started life as a classist slur. A villain, or villein, was a class of peasant, someone not of knightly status: literally unchivalrous. It was this that led villain to be associated with wrongdoing, criminality, and petty evil. To call someone a villain would have been a real insult, but the cartoon villain of more recent times has softened the meaning to something amusing, and faintly incompetent.

BUT WHERE'S THE TURKEY???
A N N O U N C E M E N T S

It's November, the month of gratitude and giving. When you remember how daylight hours shorten considerably and how the cold starts steadily seeping in this time of year, I suppose this kind of month couldn't be better placed on the calendar - so we can remember not everything is doom and gloom. Let's keep on being an awesome community that helps each other out and offer amazing feedback on each other's work. <3

Speaking of reviews, the Review League scoreboard is still looking pretty awesome. There's quite a few reviewers with over 500 points, and a couple that are nearing the 1000 milestone... Keep it up! Something just might happen for the first person to reach it. ;)

November's also famous for its NaNoWriMo event (National Novel Writing Month), and I know there's a few of you - some on Discord, some on the forums - participating. Best of luck to all of you!

Once more, @Beth Pavell brings us another word of the week! Remember, remember, the fifth of November...

It’s the fifth of November, so as some of the world half-remembers a traitor executed in 1606, this week’s word is:

treason (n.): the crime of betraying one’s country, especially by attempting to overthrow the sovereign or government. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Treason is a very old word, originating ultimately from the Latin tradere (To give up or surrender). The concept of treason is pretty much universal, though what it means in law has varied greatly across history and culture: who can commit treason, and what counts as treason? In the United Kingdom the old Treason Act 1351 is still in effect – so don’t try to kill the Queen or Prince Charles – but the last person to be executed for treason was a Nazi propagandist in 1946.

Once more, @Beth Pavell brings us another word of the week! Sums up @Misfit Angel's writing succinctly No it bloody doesn't

Diving back into technical English this week, with a possibly Greek-derived word:

amphigory (n.): A nonsense verse; a rigmarole, with apparent meaning, which on further attention proves to be meaningless [Wiktionary]

His inspirational talk was an hour-long amphigory.

A classic amphigory would be Lewis Carrol’s The Jabberwocky, quite possibly a work of deliberate parody. Terry Pratchett alludes to the idea when he commented on his invented saying ‘The big sea does not care which way the little fishes swim’ - to quote “It sounds wise, in a slightly stupid kind of way. That’s the essence of the amphigory. It sounds clever, until you stop to think about it.

delectation (n.): pleasure and delight [Oxford English Dictionary]

Now how’s that for a link to this week’s word? Delectation is usually a word used in a humorous sense, in parody or a deliberately grandiloquent way. It’s a word that connotes food, something exquisite to be savoured. And indeed delectation is related to delight – both words come to us through Old French from a usual offender, Latin. The Latin delectate gives us both words. In Old French it became both délectation and delit.

Word of the Week
inshallah (exclamation): If Allah wills it. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Inshallah (From the Arabic in šā Allāh) expresses the devout idea that nothing happens unless God wishes it to. “I will sign the contract tomorrow, inshallah.” - you may intend to sign the contract tomorrow, but if God does not will it, then there’s nothing that can be done. But inshallah can be used in an ironic, or sarcastic sense – as in, ‘the contract will only be signed if a miracle happens’, or ‘only God will make me sign this contract’.

December is more usually a month of rain, cold, and general dampness here in Blighty, so we’re bowing to that with:

dreich (adj): (especially of weather) dreary; bleak. [Oxford English Dictionary]

It looked a dreich, cold place as you rode by at night

Dreich is best known among Scots, as a word almost onomatopoeic in its description of dismal weather. The OED gives its origin in Middle English, from the Old Norse drjúgr - ‘enduring’, or ‘lasting’. And this gives a clue to the subtler connotations of the word. Dreich is not merely bad weather. It's the kind of dismal, dreary, bleak that look set to go on. And on. And on …

andrapodismos (n.): brutal, systematic murder with no pretence otherwise.

Whatever else the Ancient Greeks were, they weren’t shy about the horrors of ancient warfare. Might makes right, woe unto the vanquished; these were the typical Greek attitudes towards how the defeated side ought to be treated. And for those city-states unlucky enough, they might be visited with andrapodismos – the systematic murder of all the adult men, the women and children sold into slavery. What makes this word stand out is how unashamed it is. There is neither pretence nor euphemism in andrapodismos, a word as brutal and shameless as the act itself.

‘Tis the season to be grumpy, or indeed to be an:

iconoclast (n.): 1. a person who attacks of criticises cherished beliefs or institutions.
2. a destroyer of images used in religious worship, in particular.

Beth Pavell was a known Scrooge and iconoclast: she liked to destroy Santas.

Iconoclast is born out of strife in the Eastern Orthodox Church – led by Emperor Leo III, the government of the day led the systematic destruction of religious images, or icons (From eikōn, ‘likeness’). Icons were and are a fundamental symbol of the Orthodox Church, so now iconoclast figuratively means a person who controversially attacks the social orthodoxy.

Word of the Week
Giving in a little to the season, this week’s word is a concept familiar to most of us as kids:

iktsuarpok (n.): the feeling of anticipation while waiting for someone to arrive, often leading to intermittently going outside to check for them [Wiktionary]

The growing iktsuarpok in my limbs was driving me crazy.

Iktsuarpok is a loanword from the Inuit language Inuktitut, spoken in northern Canada. Rather wonderfully, it’s a concept that, once briefly explained, need no further elaboration. Perhaps it can also be applied to other forms of irrational impatience: to quote Tiffany Watt Smith “Might the restless checking of our phones, waiting for an expected response to a text or comment on a status update, be a type of iktsuarpok?”

Word of the Week
What better way to start the month of January than a brief look at the word itself!

January (n.): the first month of the year, in the northern hemisphere usually considered the second month of winter.

January is the Anglicised version of the Latin ianuarius, ‘the month of Janus’. Janus was the two-faced god associated with beginnings, endings, and doorways. When January is placed at the beginning of the year the month takes on an indecisive quality – literally the new year, a new beginning, but coming right on the heels of reflecting on the past year.

Word of the Week

chatoyant (adj.): of iridescent, shimmering lustre, like a cat’s eye in the dark [Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase & Fable]

The candlelight shone through the half-empty bottles like the chatoyant gleam of a predator.

Chatoyant is borrowed directly from French, chat of course meaning ‘cat’. The luminous, sometimes unnerving glow of a cat’s eye at night is caused by light bouncing off a reflective membrane at the back of the eye, called the tapetum lucidium. In gemology, chatoyancy is an optical effect that causes a reflective, almost luminous sheen – very much like the eye of a cat.

Word of the Week
grammaticaster (n.): a piddling grammarian. [Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase & Fable]

His reviews showed him to be little more than a grammaticaster.

The closest modern term would probably be ‘grammar-nazi’. And as synonyms go, it’s not bad. But while some people may call themselves grammar-nazis with pride, grammaticaster is inherently perjorative. The word comes from adding the Latin suffix aster (‘Little’, or ‘petty’) to grammatic/grammar. So grammaticaster is less ‘grammar-nazi’, more ‘Petty little grammar pedant’.

- Game travelogs, Nuzlocke fics, Let's Plays, and other niche types of fanwork are allowed as long as the majority of its contents are in a creative writing format (ie., no video-based Let's Plays or one-sentence screenshot captions).

What do you mean by creative writing format? I want to do Let's Plays. I figured I'd do them here instead of Youtube. Would be less of a hassle to work with. All I would need is the game in question and the proper system.
