Word of the Week

sophont (n.): an intelligent being; a being with base reasoning capacity roughly equivalent to or greater than that of a human being. [Wiktionary]

Evil, they argued, could only have meaning on smaller scales, in the hurt one sophont does to another. (Vernor Vinge, A Fire Upon the Deep)

How do you define something that is like a human, but not human? The classic RPG solution is to use the word race, but this carries connotations related to the idea of human ethnicity. Sophont (From the Greek σοφός, sophós, ‘wise’) is a 1960s coinage that fills this linguistic gap. A sophont, much like the Old English wiht, is something sentient, a person, but not Homo sapiens.

Word of the Week

golem (n.): 1. a clay figure brought to life by magic [Oxford English Dictionary]
2. a fool, a clod, an oaf, an awkward person [Wiktionary]

In Hebrew mythology, a golem (גולם) is an automaton, usually created from clay and animated through the use of magic. In the story of the golem of Prague, the rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel created a golem to protect the Jews of the city from persecution. In modern fantasy a golem is figuratively any magical automaton – which brings us through a circuitous route to National Pokédex #26: Golem.

Word of the Week

thorough-cough (v.): to cough and fart at the same time [Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (Paraphrased)]

In 1811, Captain Francis Grose of the British Army published his Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, and it is to him that we are in debt for this nugget of Georgian vulgarity. One can only hope it was a source of amusement for the poor bloody infantry, slogging it on the battlefields of Europe during the Napoleonic Wars.

Word of the Week
meta (adj.): (of a creative work) referring to itself or to the conventions of its genre: self-referential [Oxford English Dictionary]

In the original Greek, meta (μετά) was a prefix meaning simply ‘after’, ‘with’, or ‘beyond’, and could be used in a similar fashion to the way the Latin post is used in modern English. Its use in English comes from a misinterpretation of Aristotle’s Metaphysics, taken to mean “the science beyond the physical”; as opposed to “the book that comes after the book called Physics”. In common usage meta is now shorthand for any self-referential creative work.

Word of the Week
This week’s word comes from the evocative vocabulary of the Celtic fringe:

fossick (v.): 1. to be troublesome.
2. to search for something; to rummage. [Wiktionary]

Fossick has its origins in Cornwall, deriving from the Cornish feusik, ‘fortunate’. Mining culture runs deep in the Cornish lexicon. It would appear fossick arrives in Australian and New Zealand English through the emigration of Cornish miners to new opportunities elsewhere in the Empire.

Word of the Week

Henchman

henchman (n.): a faithful follower or political supporter, especially one prepared to engage in crime or violence by way of service. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Originally from the Old English hengestman – literally ‘horseman’, a henchman was originally a groom, a servant who looked after horses. The term fell out of use in English but was retained in Scots, where somehow it was muddled in the 19th century, possibly through a misunderstanding of Sir Walter Scot’s writing, into the modern meaning of an insalubrious servant.

Word of the Week

juggernaut (n.): 1. the form of Krishna worshipped in Puri, Orissa, where in the annual festival his image is dragged through the streets on a heavy chariot.
2. a huge, powerful, and overwhelming force. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Juggernaut is one of those strange Anglicisms that derive from one Indian word or another, a linguistic legacy of empire. Juggernaut comes from the Hindi jagannāth (जगन्नाथ), ‘Lord of the Universe’, one of the names of the god Krishna. With a typical English refusal to be simple or logical, the word was somehow subsequently Anglicised using a Greek suffix.

caterpillar (n.): 1. the larva of a butterfly or moth, which has a segmented body resembling a worm with three pairs of true legs and several pairs of leg-like appendages. [Oxford English Dictionary]
2. a person who preys on others; an extortioner. [Dictionary.com]

From the Old French chatepelose, ‘hairy cat’, we get caterpillar – which as we all know, is very hungry. Perhaps that’s why the word is partially influenced by the obsolete piller, ‘ravager’ or ‘despoiler’. In the 15th century caterpillar took on the figurative sense of a person who is a pest, a parasite.

Word of the Week
butterfly (n.): a nectar-feeding insect with two pair of large, typically brightly coloured wings that are coveted with microscopic scales. [Oxford English Dictionary]

It has been charmingly suggested that butterfly is a corruption of ‘flutter-by’ - and while this etymology has a certain poetic neatness to it, it is alas wrong. The alternate theory that it derives from the Old English bēatan (to beat or smash) is also probably untrue. Butterfly is more or less the modern form of butorflēorge, literally ‘butter fly’, probably originally meaning the male brimstone butterfly (Gonepteyrx rhamni).

Announcements and Teasers
Nothing just yet, but we have some news being prepared for later this week, so keep an eye out. Watch this space.

Edit: After some discussion, the team has decided to clarify the wording of one of the Review League rules. "Speedy Review" points are conferred to any review of a recently updated fic, whether or not the review pertains to the most recent update. Previously, this rule was ambiguous, as some reviewers found it intuitive that only reviews of new content would be eligible for this bonus. The new wording is as follows:
  • For speedy reviews done within 48 hours of a fic being released or updated, you will receive 2 extra points. Reviews need not pertain to the latest update.
  • For speedy reviews done within 24 hours of a fic being released or updated, you will receive 4 extra points. Reviews need not pertain to the latest update.
We hope this will encourage more reviews of longer fics that would otherwise not benefit nearly as much from the speedy review incentive!

Word of the Week
paladin (n.): 1. any of the twelve peers of Charlemagne’s court, of whom the Count Palatine was the chief.
2. a knight renowned for heroism and chivalry. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Today a paladin is a common RPG trope, an indisputably virtuous warrior implacably opposed to evil. The concept ultimately comes from medieval romance, notably The Song of Roland, where the paladins are elite knights defending France from the invasion of the Saracens. Paladin, unsurprisingly, is a loanword from French, itself derived from the Latin palatinus (‘palace official’).

Paladins are also my go-to RPG character class! A very good word of the week indeed, thank you Beth.

Word of the Week
paranymph (n.): a friend of the bridegroom; a best man; a bridesmaid [Wiktionary]

As usual, all the paranymphs were banned from wearing white.

It’s obviously Greek, and in its ancient sense, a paranymph (παράνυμφος) was a guest of honour at a wedding. Rather pleasingly, it can still be used as a gender-neutral term in the same way. But paranymph seems to have collected a hotch-potch of additional meanings – it can also, for example, refer to a thought revealed through a slip of the tongue, such as a Freudian slip.

⦁ Mild Violence - Cartoon and fantasy violence are fine in any amount. Blood and gore should not be present, and any deaths should not be violent in nature
So I can't have someone like, cut themself or are we talking like something far more than cuts and bruises (like straight up amputation)?

Context is important, but in general terms I'd say simply getting a cut counts as Mild Violence. You can always PM a Workshop moderator if you want opinions on a specific scene
Ok, that's what I wanted to know. I wasn't going to go to the level of gore and gushing blood. More like, cuts and such. I mean, that's entirely different compared to having a huge gash in your arm and blood gushing out. That would be more a mature rating. Like, when a Pokemon uses scratch or slash or any type of move like that in battle, I was going to have there be blood, but not like gushing out (like a story with a mature rating).

Announcements
There are two big things to announce this week! First is the fate of the Writers Workshop's long-running seasonal awards. tl;dr (shame on you! this is a community built on reading!) there were far too many ritical problems and utter annoyances with running the seasonal awards, so they are being postponed indefinitely.

The next thing to announce is our Summer 2019 Themed Oneshot Competition! We're hoping this'll ease the pain of losing the traditional awards and still capture that competitive spirit for those who are interested in it. The theme for this event is undelivered messages, and further details can be found in the announcement thread. He's hoping this trial event works out well!

Word of the Week

29 July – Animalcule

animalcule (n.): a microscopic animal [Oxford English Dictionary]

Each handful of soil hides a vast zoo of animalcules.

A curious word, at once familiar and archaic, animalculum comes from the Latin animal with the addition of the diminuitive -culus. Thus a modern English coinage might be something like ‘minimal’, or ‘animally’. From its 16th century usage animalcule could mean any small animal, a spermatozoa, and of course, a micro-organism.

backpfeifengesicht (n.): a slappable face; a face in need of a slap. [Wiktionary]

The man had an entirely unresistable backpfeifengesicht.

Backpfeifengesicht
is unsurprisingly, a German word. The advantage of compound words is that there's almost always a word for something - and indeed there's something neat about the concept of a word for a face that it somehow ... smackable. Punchable. A reaction to the, often unintentional, appearance some faces of have of insufferable smugness that just invites violence.

Word of the Week

19 August – Beadledom

beadledom (n.): 1. Beadles collectively, and their characteristics as a class.
2. Stupid or senseless officiousness. [Wiktionary]

I shall endeavour to limit the occupation of the Beadle of Golden Square to pure beadledom, by prohibiting him from waiting at the evening parties of the trustees, and beating the door-mats of the inhabitants.” (Punch magazine, vol. 13)

There seems to be a positively endless variety of words to describe pomposity and general nettling officiousness. Beadledom, despite being made up of very old elements, only entered the language in the 1800s. The office of beedle goes right back to Anglo-Saxon England (From Old English beodan, ‘to proclaim’), and usually refers to some kind of minor government official.

25 August – Cacography

cacography (n.): 1. Bad spelling or punctuation.
2. Poor or illegible handwriting. [Wiktionary]

I cannot abide seeing cacography in fanfiction – at least use a spellchecker!

Cacography is the sign of a creative mind.

I think many of us are guilty of this one, in one form or another. Cacography amusingly sounds ruder than it really is, from the Greek kákos, (κακός), ‘bad’, and the Latin graphia (‘written, writing, etc’). Most obviously it can refer to messy handwriting, but perhaps a more interesting use is as shorthand for elementary spelling, punctuation and grammar sins.
