Word of the Week

abstentious (adj.): characterised by abstinence; self-restraint. [Wiktionary]

She’d resolved to be abstentious for the New Year.

Almost precisely a synonym for abstemious, abstentious has a similar pedigree, too, entering the language through the expected route of Anglicised French. Unlike abstemious, abstentious connotes giving up, or refusal, more than moderation.

Word of the Week

acheilous (adj.): lipless. [Wiktionary]

That Lovecraftian acheilous face got on my nerves.

Something of a trivia word, and one that requires a bit of etymological breaking down to get to grips with. It helps to know that the Ancient Greek kheîlos (χεῖλος) simply means ‘lip’. Thus a-lip-ous, to have no lips. Acheilous is best used whenever you want to annoy somebody who believes in plain speaking above all else.

Unfortunately Red ends up with something quite different. Something cute. Something... cuddly. In a world where size is power and innocence is weakness, it will take all of Red's power to survive.
It's Not Always Black and White, by @UncleKAKAA
  • An adaptation of the storyline in Pokemon Black and White, with more realism and maturity. Witness the rise of Team Plasma as it could have been, with Ghetsis at its head and N as the puppet dancing to his strings. Word of the Week

anemious (adj.): growing in exposed, windy places. [Wiktionary]

She was often seen on the high moors, as anemious as heather.

Anemious sounds rather like it ought to be something to do with bloodlessness (anaemic, ‘Weak, listless, lacking vigour’), but it actually derives from the Greek ánemos (ἄνεμος), ‘wind’. Likewise anemophilous, while sounding like it ought to be a synonym, actually means ‘pollinated by the wind’.

Depending on where you are in the world, you might be experiencing quite a bit more daytime compared to a month ago, and even some early signs of Spring. They say January is a dreary month - believe it or not, we're already in the second month of the decade. Has anyone been keeping their resolutions for the new year? My top resolution was to write at least fifty words a day of prose fiction, and I've somehow managed to keep my streak so far! Let's make this a good year for writing, all of us together.

Word of the Week

caesious (adj.): having a blue colour. [Wiktionary]

Caesious cars are very much in vogue at the moment.

Not, as you might think, ‘cheesy’ (Which would be casearious), but blue, or blue-grey. The etymology, other than the obviously Latin derivation, is unclear. Caesious may be related to caelum, ‘sky’, which would give it a kinship with celestial, which derives from the same source.

Word of the Week

annelidous (adj.): of or pertaining to annelids. [Wiktionary]

Annelidous clouds streaked the early morning sky.

Or to put it another way: wormy. The phylum Annelida is one of those with a vast diversity of species that nevertheless gets forgotten about if you’re not a biologist. Also known as the segmented worms, the Annelida also includes the humble earthworm. Used in this simplified sense, annelidous is a synonym for a similarly obscure word, vermiform.

Word of the Week

bawcock (n.): a fine fellow. [Wiktionary]

Good bawcock, bate thy rage. Use lenity, sweet chuck.

Not what it sounds like – but still appropriate enough to be our word following Valentine’s Day. The example for this week comes from Shakespeare’s Henry V, which indicates the archaic nature of the word. Strangely, bawcock derives from the Old French baud (‘bold’, or ‘gay’), and ‘cock’, a now largely obsolete diminutive and term of affection (Although still alive in some English dialects).

2. (of speech) Excessive, overabundant, rife. [Wiktionary]

He was a plethoric sort of man, constantly red and always sweating.
Her plethoric speeches could easily go on for hours.

Plethoric – a word to attack flowery speech, purple prose, sententious speaking, pompous blatherskites, and good old-fashioned wind bags. Plethoric originally had a medical sense, such as it was, which explains why it does not merely mean ‘abundant’, but ‘overfull’.

quiddity (n.): 1. the inherent nature or essence of someone or something.
2. a distinctive feature; a peculiarity. [Oxford English Dictionary]

It is the task of philosophy to consider the quiddity of life.
Their quiddity wasn’t obvious; at first glance you’d think them impossibly bland.

Quiddity
comes from the Medieval Latin quidditas – in turn from the Latin quid, ‘what’. In the simplest sense quiddity can therefore be Anglicised into ‘whatness’. If you regard this all as pedantic tinkering with language, then you may not be alone, because another sense of the word is a ‘trifle’, or ‘quibble’.

2. a wicked person; a villain. [Wiktionary]

Like a nithing he’d rather let others do his dirty work for him.
What a parcel of nithings has blighted our nation!

A very Northern European word, nithing has cognates in the usual suspects: the Danish nidding, and the German neiding, for example. Nithing, although admittedly archaic, survives more or less untouched from the Old English niðing, with very much a consistent meaning to boot.

2. an awkward, complex, or hazardous situation. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Torrential rain turned the paths into quagmires.
Reconciling everyone’s complaints was a political quagmire.

Quagmire is something of a tautological word, as each of its components mean more or less the same thing. Quag, from the Old English cwabba (Something that shakes or trembles; soft and flabby), meaning a marshy or boggy place. Mire, soft mud or dirt, from the Norse mýrr (A swamp or bog). Quag, mire, and quagmire are in the modern sense more or less interchangeable.

Word of the Week

primaveral (adj.): of, or pertaining to, the early springtime. [dictionary.com]

The primaveral weather was characteristically unsettled.

Wiktionary simply defines primaveral as ‘spring’, which somewhat ignores the nuance displayed by the word’s etymology. The Latin ver is where we get vernal and the veral element; prima is literally first, hence primaveral = early springtime. Rare in English, primaveral has forms in most Romance languages, including the Romanian primăveră.

Word of the Week

cleave (v.): 1. split or sever (something), especially along a natural line or grain.
2. stick fast to, adhere strongly to. [Oxford English Dictionary]

the large axe his father used to split wood for the fire.
Rose’s mouth was dry, her tongue cleaving to the roof of her mouth.

Cleave
is one of those strange words that can have entirely opposite meanings—a contranym, or Janus word. Unusually both these senses are in use in Modern English. The reason is a matter of coincidence. ‘Cleave’ as in ‘to split’ comes from the Old English clēofan, whereas ‘cleave’ ‘to stick’ comes from the Old English cleofian. You might say these are two different words that happen to be spelt the same way.

cosset (v.): 1. care for and protect in an overindulgent way. [Oxford English Dictionary]
2. to fondle; to touch or stroke lovingly. [Wiktionary]

Cosset, not to be confused with posset (a hot drink made of milk curdled with alcohol, typically flavoured with spices) is a bramble patch of a word, rife with related senses and meanings. Probably from the Old English cosæta, ‘cottager’, cosset has otherwise meant a hand-raised lamb or a spoiled child, along with its figurative verb forms – leaving us with the ability to cosset a cosset.

Word of the Week

decimate (v.): 1. to kill one-tenth of a group.
2. to destroy or remove one-tenth of anything. [Wiktionary]

Decimate, from the Latin decimare (‘to take or offer a tenth part’) originally referred to a Roman military practice where a random one in ten soldiers were executed to punish the whole unit. Figuratively (and incorrectly, though semantic drift makes such distinctions futile) it now more of often means ‘to annihilate’ or ‘to almost entirely destroy’. A decimate, in the noun form, could refer to a ten percent tax or even a synonym for ten percent.

Announcements and Events
A couple of announcements today - firstly, the sign-ups for Trainers of Fanfiction are now closed. Thanks to everyone who entered - you can all look forward to seeing the first character next Wednesday.

Secondly, and I daresay everyone's noticed by now, but Roleplaying Games are now a subsection of the Writers' Workshop. Roleplays will work more or less the way they always have, but we do have a new rule thread here. This change is very much in its infancy right now, and we're all keeping an eye out to see just how it works in practice.

Word of the Week

quidnunc (n.): an inquisitive and gossipy person. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Helen Lovejoy is a quintessential quidnunc.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this archaic word is of 18th century origin. Certainly one of the best examples of Latin for the sake of Latin, quidnunc is literally ‘what now?’. The applications of the word are arguably few, though one might imagine what a good Hangman or Scrabble word it might make.

Word of the Week

isomorphic (adj.): corresponding or similar in form and relations [Oxford English Dictionary]

Typically for twins, they were bewilderingly isomorphic.

From the Greek ísos (ἴσος), ‘equal’, and morphē (μορφή) ‘form, shape’, isomorphic can therefore be used as an adjective for anything that is extremely similar, or identical. How similar is a matter of pedantry, in much the same way that the validity of the phrase “very unique” depends on how literally you want to take the ísos element of the word.
