Word of the Week: H.P. Lovecraft Month

blasphemous (adj.): sacrilegious against God or sacred things; profane. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Blasphemy, from the Greek blasphēmía (βλασφημία), ‘profanity’, was once a powerful force in the Anglophone world, taken very seriously and at the heart of artistic controversies (Blasphemy was abolished as a crime in the UK in 2008). Blasphemous is therefore in relatively rare usage today, seeming somewhat archaic, even backward.

‘Blasphemous’ was also one of H.P Lovecraft’s favourite words, used figuratively to describe things so alien or horrific to human perception, that they seem to offend humanity itself.

Word of the Week

cyclopean (adj.): 1. denoting a type of ancient masonry made with massive irregular blocks.
2. of or resembling a cyclops. [Oxford English Dictionary]
3. massive in stature. [Wiktionary]

As is well-known, in Greek mythology the Cyclopes were a race of giant one-eyed creatures, famously appearing in Homer’s Odyssey. According to the Roman author Pliny’s Natural Historia, the Cyclopes invented this type of masonry. A cyclops can also be anything literally or figuratively one-eyed, or even ‘merely’ gigantic.

Lovecraft tended to use ‘cyclopean’ in the third sense, often when trying to impress upon a reader the size and oppressive horror of alien or dreamlike structures.

Word of the Week

accursed (adj.): 1. under a curse.
2. used to express strong dislike of or anger at someone or something. [Oxford English Dictionary]
3. doomed to destruction or misery; cursed; anathematised. [Wiktionary]

Accursed says it all – from the Old English curs, ‘curse’, it is a word with a very old pedigree, one that has scarcely changed over the centuries. ‘Accursed’ is also one of the few words Lovecraft used in a straightforward manner, usually using it in the second sense of something to be strongly disliked.

Remember, all reviews done as part of the Review Game are worth an extra +6 points in the Review League!

Word of the Week

loathsome (adj.): causing hatred or disgust. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Loathsome is not a light-hearted word – as synonyms for ‘disgust’ go, it’s among the strongest, connoting aversion to the point of hatred. The etymology goes all the way back to the Old English laþ, ‘hateful’, ‘evil’, etc, which goes some way towards explaining its modern usage. Laþ also gave rise to the less common loath, ‘unwilling’ or ‘reluctant’.

‘Loathsome’ was a favourite adjective for Lovecraft, tending to use it more accurately and descriptively than some of his other filler adjectives.

Word of the Week

singular (adj.): 1. denoting or referring to just one person or thing.
2. exceptionally good to great: remarkable.
3. strange or eccentric in some respect. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Our Lovecraft month comes to an end with a word that turns up time and again in his horror: singular. Lovecraft used this in the vaguest possible sense, denoting something so strange, outré, and alien as to be described with the vaguest of adjectives. One often suspects this was his filler word when the thesaurus failed him.

Word of the Week

presenteeism (n.): the fact of being present at work, especially if one is too sick to be productive, or working beyond the expected hours

If absenteeism is the habit of being absent from work on a flimsy or mendacious pretext, then presenteeism is it’s opposite – being at work when one has every reason not to be. A condition beloved of employers, where all too often it is turned into a virtue, or worse, an expectation.

Word of the Week

boudoir (n.): 1. a woman’s bedroom or small private room.
2. where a French guy does it. [Homer Simpson]

For here in the boudoir, the gourmand metamorphosises into the voluptuary!

Boudoir
, from the French bouder ‘to sulk’, cognate with the more archaic English bower, in a literal sense is a room to withdraw to – sulk in, to be very literal about it. Confusingly, boudoirs are also the French name for the biscuits variously known as ladyfingers, sponge fingers, and savoiardi.

triumvirate (n.): 1. an official group of three people, especially a ruling council of three men and particularly two such councils in Roman history. [Wiktionary]
2. three guys giving orders. [Homer Simpson.

The most famous triumvirate is that of Julius Caesar, Marcus Crassus, and Gnaeus Pompeius, which fell apart after Crassus was killed by the Parthians, while Caesar and Crassus subsequently went to war with one another. For once, Homer is basically correct. A triumvirate was a special commission in Rome, and since has come to refer figuratively to any cartel of three powerful individuals.

Word of the Week

apricity (n.): the warmth of the sun in winter [Wiktionary].

English is sometimes accused of being altogether dull and lacking in the kind of wonderfully precise words found in, for example, German. Apricity puts the lie to that, even if we must also acknowledge its Latin root. Apricity comes from apricus ‘sunny’, or ‘warmed by the sun’ (Also, in Medieval Latin, ‘delightful’). Not in any way related to apricots, though perhaps in a more ordered world it would be.

Word of the Week

mitzvah (n.): 1. any of the 613 commandments of Jewish law.
2. an act of kindness, a good deed [Wiktionary].

Yiddish words occasionally find their way into English as slang, but mitzvah (מצווה) is bona fide Hebrew, literally meaning ‘commandment’. Its secondary sense refers to a good deed or kindness, consistent with the law. Mitzvah in this sense connotes acting with the spirit of the law as opposed to the letter.

malaise (n.): a general feeling of discomfort, illness, or unease when the exact cause is difficult to identify [Oxford English Dictionary].

Midwinter is the season of malaise.

Literally ‘ill at ease’, from the French mal (‘badly’ or ‘wrongly’) and -aise (‘ease’ or ‘satisfaction’), malaise is similar to the literal ‘disease’ (dis-ease). Malaise connotes a generalistic idea of mental illness, a nagging or persistent feeling of being physically or emotionally run-down.

hansel (n.): 1. a gift given at the beginning of the year or to mark an acquisition or the start of an enterprise.
2. the first instalment of a payment.
(v.): 1. to give a hansel to.
2. inaugurate (something), especially by being the first to try it. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Hansel, also ‘handsel’, is a word that survived Latin but not, it seems, modern English. The lucky connotations of the word arrive in the language with Middle English, but the word itself comes from the Old English handselen, apparently borrowed from the Old Norse ‘handsal’, or literally ‘hand-gift’.

Word of the Week

callid (adj.): characterised by cunning or shrewdness; crafty. [Wiktionary]

Callid has a rather strange etymology, one that’s spawned a variety of apparently unrelated words. Callid comes from the Latin callidus (‘cunning’, or ‘clever’), in turn from callere (‘to harden’). Thus the same root word gives us both callid and callous (‘unfeeling and indifferent to the feelings of others’), as well as callent (‘knowledgeable or skillful’).

kind (n.): one’s inherent nature: character, natural disposition.
(adj.): characteristic of the species; belonging to one’s nature; natural; native. [Wiktionary]

Kind once had a broader meaning than it does today (Most often used in the sense of ‘benevolent, gentle’, or ‘type, category’). Kind derives from the Old English cynde or ġecynde, which often meant something more like ‘natural’, or ‘inherent’. To be ‘kindful’, therefore, was to be ‘natural’; ‘kinderly’ was ‘naturally’.

Lucent, related to the Latin lux (‘light’), is perhaps less familiar than its cousin lucid (‘clear’, ‘easily understood’, ‘sane’), being reserved for poetic or literary usage. Lucent also gives us the wonderful lucency – to be entirely straightforward, ‘glowy’.

Word of the Week

oeillade (n.): a glance, especially an amorous one; an ogle. [Wiktionary]

While it looks rather like it ought to mean ‘to throw wine at someone’ (One supposes that would be ‘oenade’), oeillade is a direct loanword from the French (Alternatively spelled ‘œillade’), in which it can also refer furtive or conspiratorial looks. The word turned up in English in the 16th century, though it does not seem to have caught on.

Word of the Week

annihilate (v.): destroy utterly; obliterate. [Oxford English Dictionary]

You can blame this word’s awkward spelling and odd pronunciation on Latin roots. Annihilate comes from the Latin annihilatus, ‘to reduce to nothing’, from nihil, ‘nothing’. One of many 16th century coinages, annihilate was originally an adjective meaning ‘destroyed’, or ‘annulled’.
