New Releases
Starcraft vs Warcraft, by @Ihsan997
  • In the far reaches of the Koprulu Sector, a confluence of worlds through the Nexus occurs for the first time. Years before major events, light years away from major locations, a relatively small contingent each from the Protoss and the Eredar engage on a close encounter of the third kind. What could be a peaceful exchange of ideas is held back by the actors involved, and an accord can never be reached; for the Protoss are Tal’darim, and the Eredar serve the Burning Legion.

Word of the Week

snollygoster (n.): a shrewd person not guided by principles; especially a politician. [Wiktionary]

Another glorious 19th-century American coinage, snollygoster is also of uncertain etymology. Possibly from the Pennsylvania German schnelle geeschter, in turn from the German schnell (‘quick’), and geist (‘spirit’) - but realistically, I think we shall never truly know.

Word of the Week

burgeon (v.): begin to grow or increase rapidly; flourish. [Oxford English Dictionary]
(n.): a bud, sprout, shoot. [Wiktionary].

Burgeon, in the quintessential lexicon of Springtime – a word that connotes being on the very cusp of something gloriously alive. Two possible etymologies present themselves. Burgeon may derive from the Anglo-Norman, ultimately from the Latin burra (‘wool’ or ‘fluff’). Alternately, it may go all the way back to Proto-Indo-European, related to the Old English byre (‘child’, or ‘descendant’), among other words.

Will she get her wish of performing before her mom, Prof. Rowan, and Cynthia, and add her own stamp on these ancient plays beloved by many in the Pokeworld?

  • Ash Ketchum was well on his way back to Pallet Town after Kalos, ready to take a break from the events that had transpired in the Kalos region. Ash was used to getting into situations like this, though he knew it was all a part of his goal to become the very best. However, when he makes a flimsy promise on a whim to try and find his best friend's family, he finds himself in for more than he bargained for. His strength, loyalty, and bonds are all put to the test; his pokemon accompanying him for the ride. Will Ash be able to fulfill his promise? Or is it as unachievable as his own dream to be a Pokemon Master?
White Swan, Black Swan, by @Sinderella

Word of the Week

prerogative (n.): a right or privilege exclusive to a particular individual or class.
(Also royal prerogative) the right of the sovereign, which in British law is theoretically subject to no restriction. [Oxford English Dictionary]

A rather strange word, and liable to trip up the tongue, we have Latin to blame prerogative. Once a specific Roman legal term, the term has since been used to denote exclusive, almost untouchable, rights or privileges.

haimish (adj.): homey, folksy. [Wiktionary]

Another example derived from the Yiddish lexicon, haimish, from heymish (היימיש) seems to be cognate with the High German heimisch (heim + isch, literally homelike). It doesn’t fill a gap in English vocabulary, nor are its applications especially varied, but it does have a kind euphony all of its own.

Word of the Week

abecedarian (n.): 1. someone who is learning the alphabet.
2. an elementary student, a novice; one in the early steps of learning.
3. someone engaged in teaching the alphabet; an elementary teacher.
4. a work which uses words or lines in alphabetical order.
(adj.): 1. pertaining to someone learning the alphabet or basic studies.
2. arranged in alphabetical manner. [Wiktionary]

Apparently a highly pliant word, abecedarian is explained by its Latin origins – from abecedarius, ‘all about the ABCs’, to give an alternate gloss. Easy as ABC: abecedarian.

egg (n.): 1. an oval or round object laid by a female reptile, bird, fish, or invertebrate, usually containing a developing embryo.
2. the female reproductive cell in animals and plants; an ovum. [Oxford English Dictionary]
3. a person, fellow.
4. a young person.

Egg has radiated into a variety of odd colloquialisms, including derogatory usages in reference to people. Egg is Germanic although not Old English – the Old English egg was æġ (pronounced ‘eye’), which became ey (Plural eyren) in Middle English. Egg, however, comes from the Old Norse egg – two nouns for the same thing, ultimately from the same source.

claptrap (n.): 1. empty verbiage or nonsense.
2. a device for producing a clapping sound in theatres.
3. a device or trick to gain applause; a humbug. [Wiktionary]

Word of the Week

immanent (adj.): 1. Naturally part of something; existing within and throughout something; intrinsic.
2. Restricted entirely to the mind or a given domain; internal; subjective.
3. Existing within and throughout the mind and the world; dwelling within and throughout all things; all time, etc.

The technical usage of immanent in philosophy becomes obvious when one looks at the difficulty of succinctly defining it. Immanent derives from the Latin immanere, to remain or stay. In the philosophy of religion, immanence is the theory that the divine exists within the world, as opposed to transcendence, in which the divine is outside the world.

imminent (adj.): 1. about to happen.
2. overhanging. [Oxford English Dictionary]

Imminent, from the Latin imminere, to overhang, and an almost perfect homophone for immanent (‘Naturally part of something; existing within and throughout something; intrinsic’). The ‘i’ is crucial, in this case, which explains why it can be entirely possible to describe something as ‘imminently immanent’.

Word of the month (?) is trouble. It's a noun or verb that dates back to the 13th century, and comes from the Anglo-French word truble, which itself comes from the Latin turbidis, roughly meaning rough. It has all sorts of definitions: it can mean unrest/disturbance, a state of physical distress, being in trouble, an effort, a sad fact, to inconvenience, what Ash and his friends prepare for (and making it double) almost every episode, and many more.

Used in a sentence, it didn't trouble me to do this because I had some time to kill, but am I going to get in trouble for this? I hope not... >_>

Word of the Week

elucubrate (v.): to solve, write, or compose by working studiously at night; to study. [Wiktionary]

Elucubrate, from the Latin elucubrare (‘to compose by lamplight) – you may notice the shadow of the Latin lux, ‘light’ in there. It’s figurative meaning may be illuminated (Pun intended) by it’s idiomatic synonym: ‘to burn the midnight oil’, or even ‘to pull an all-nighter’. Elucubrate thus becomes an expression for hard work spent over a desk, long after most people would have, indeed, called it a night.

Word of the Week

weal (n.): 1. a red, swollen mark left on flesh by a blow or pressure.
2. that which is best for someone or something. [Oxford English Dictionary]
3. wealth or riches.
4. the general happiness of a community, country, etc. [Wiktionary]

Sense 1 comes from the Old English wale (‘ridge’, ‘rib’, ‘bank’, etc), also more rarely spelt wheal. Sense 2-4 are rather from wela, generally meaning prosperity, health, and riches. In a roundabout fashion this is where we get commonwealth – common in the sense of ‘public’, hence the public good.

Word of the Week

argle-bargle (n.): a verbal argument.
(v.): to argue. [Wiktionary]

An apparently nonsense word, used somewhat irreverently by the late Antonin Scalia, on closer inspection reveals itself to be Scots, though its derivation is somewhat more opaque. It appears to be an alteration of argue, possibly from argie-bargie (‘Noisy disagreement, often with some fighting’) - but as usual confident claims as to it’s origins tend to lead to circular evidence.

Word of the Week

foofaraw (n.): 1. overly excessive or flashy ornamentation or decoration.
2. fuss over something of little importance. [Wiktionary]

A rather obscure Americanism, and one without a clear etymology. Foofaraw may derive from the Spanish fanfarrón (‘boastful’) or the French froufrou (‘Heavily ornamental’ or ‘overly elaborate’).
