Things that frustrate you in games?

I hate grinding. I also hate farming.

I haaaaaaaaaate escort missions. Seriously, GuildWars: Factions is pretty much this for almost 100% of the campaign. Screw you, Togo. Screw you, Mhenlo. Screw you, giant mob of defenseless turtles that die if you look at them funny.

However, I think the thing I hate the most are games where you can't kill the enemies. I absolutely refuse to play any of those, like Silent Hill: The Room (you can't kill the ghosts; you can merely pin them down later on) and any Amnesia game (seriously, those games are super-fun to watch, I watched my friend play through them, but I myself can't deal with playing a game where I can't kill the things. Let me kill the things!).

In VN's I absolutely hate when there isn't a skip feature. It sucks when you are trying to get multiple endings but you cant skip past all the text you've already come across.

Not being able to change controls. Especially bad if you play 2 games which are similar but have different layouts. It's tricky playing GTA 5 after weeks of Saints row 3. Not being able to switch move character to the D Pad in Pokemon Sun is annoying since it's still used for other things and my analog pad cushion keeps falling off.

Limited save slots. Even worse when there aren't any for no good reason. Pokemon could at least give us 2 slots. How hard can it be?

Random enemy encounters can be really frustrating at times. It's like games know when you don't want them and send them very frequently, but then when you're trying to grind all of the sudden they stop appearing altogether.

Status effects that effect the enemy much less than you. These were the worst in Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow, especially with moves like "Bind". That game was a nightmare. Lol.

The "call another wild Pokemon" mechanic in Sun/Moon. Neat on paper, bad and extremely frustrating in execution.

Tough minigames that you're required to play to continue a game.

It didn't really bother me until a certain point in BoTW, but the weapon/shield breaking mechanism. Could have been alleviated if weapons and shields could be attained later on that wouldn't break. The mechanism did not bother me until I had to start fighting Guardians, which deflecting destroys shields so easily.

When a game can be beaten entirely in single-player and is primarily a single-player game, yet has trophies that require online play. For instance, Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3. Some of the trophies require doing things online but that game is old now and nobody plays it, so good luck with that. It's ridiculous since nobody buys a game like that for online features. Thankfully, Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn had all offline trophies.

Also, sometimes RNG makes games more frustrating than they should be. In Rune Factory 4, I didn't get the marriage proposal event for Doug (the bachelor I had at full affection for literally multiple in-game years) until it was the very last random town event to trigger. It was year 4 before my MC was able to marry him.

I hate it when a game is so hard that it takes hours just to beat one level or clear one area. 1 hour is my threshold. If it takes longer than that for me to proceed to the next area that isn't part of a role-playing game, I'll call it a day. At worst, I'll lose interest and stop playing if it's ridiculous in its intensity.

I also don't care for secrets in games that are so difficult to figure out that you wouldn't even know there was a secret unless you were told about it. They don't need to be super obvious in giving out smoke signals, but the tiniest of clues can go a long way.

Donkey Kong 64 was an okay game, I guess. It wasn't a great game, but thanks to the Donkey Kong arcade game you're required to beat not once but TWICE, it was insufferable. I don't get why they made something like that mandatory. The original arcade game gave you lives. This stupid game didn't give you any of that mercy. You messed up, you had to start all the way from the beginning, and there's four long levels to endure. It wasn't fun and it wasn't needed. Thanks Rare for making it mandatory. Not all of us can be Billy Mitchell.

I've developed a new pet peeve in gaming. That pet peeve is enemies in an RPG that heal themselves and others, particularly if it's multiples of the same enemy and they keep spamming a group heal whenever you try to do damage. =_= Bonus points if said enemy has a lot of health too.

I can't stand the grungy brown/black/rust red/vomit green colors that some games, particularly "edgey" shooters, use. Brown walls, brown floors, brown enemies, brown weapons, brown armor. Just everything brown. It's old, it's unoriginal, it's cliche, and it makes things really hard to see. Worse when the room has dimmed lighting on top of it all. I'm looking at you, Quake 1.

Like for god sake, at least change up the levels so that they use different color palettes. I get the idea is that they're going for realistic visuals, but life isn't just brown and faded colors. How about the next time there's an alien or demon invasion, we go shoot some up in a vibrant forest? At least that would be nice on the eyes.

Also, while I'm at it, can't we just go back to simple days of classic shooters? I don't want to sit there waiting for a cutscene to end while it force feeds me the plot, I just want to get out there and play.

Two words.
Unskippable. Cutscenes. This includes credits. I know I beat the game but I don’t want to see this stuff. And SM is the worst with this. About every 20 mins you are getting assaulted by a cutscene in about a 4-hour long game. And man I just want to save my data right now, let me!

And also, when there should be a time limit but there isn’t. An example is XY and SM, where the quicker you react the higher the chance the world will be safe. It’s one of those weird things about me.

Enemies that have to be fought and defeated in order to make progress. This excludes bosses, obviously, but I still hate having to get my ass handed to me a thousand times before I'm able to do anything else

It’s also bad when you can avoid them but after you beat the boss they can’t be battled for exp

I finally thought of something to add here that isn't just being Cap'n Obvious. I like savoring every game, taking it slowly and meticulously and seeing if it rewards me for this play style, and I also hate looking up guides. This puts me in situations such as with games like Nier, which inspired this post: I feel compelled to do all the side quests, because they're possible and they're right in front of me, y'know? The problem is that all the side quests are boring and tedious as hell. I can't say that they're not worth it, because I haven't looked up any guides, so I don't know if the game will reward me for putting up with all of these stupid NPCs who don't want to collect 5 Newt Eyes and 10 Goat Turds themselves and make me do it. I do this to myself because I want to see the "Way-Too-Nice-Guy Ending", if there is one, or even worse, the True Ending, if it's locked behind enabling these lazy-ass NPCs. Before I find this out myself - most likely seeing the same ending every other player sees and lamenting all the time I spent collecting those Goat Turds - I'm here taking months to beat a game that most people beat in a few weeks.

1. Needlessly complicated stuff (Zestiria's battle system)
2. Tutorials that are too hard to understand or comprehend or apply
3. Lack of skip features in most VNs
4. Unskippable cutscenes
5. Scenes that take way too long (Most of the friend events in Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns)
6. Lack of simple explanations for where to go, how to get something, etc. (Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings, anyone?)
7. Games that don't let you change or manipulate the controls or don't explain which buttons do what action

It's to make the story more dramatic.
