Just for the sake of clarity and to avoid explaining: A monotype team is when the player only uses Pokémon of one particular type (using all water types, for example). Duel types are allowed as long as one of the types fits. So Geodude can be used on a Rock or Ground Mono type team because it is a Rock/Ground type.

So my question is: What are things to keep in mind when/if a writer decides to do this?
Obviously, they would struggle against Gym Leaders who specialize in types their chosen type is weak too (Water type team vs electric and types).
On the flip side, they would be able to steamroll Gym Leaders who specialize in types that their chosen type is strong against (Water type team vs fire types).

hi! idk if this will still be helpful considering this post is a couple months old, but i almost exclusively play the games with varying monotype teams and one thing i recommend keeping in mind is the frequency at which your character's chosen type appears for them to catch/encounter in whatever region they'll be in.

like normal or water or flying types you'll find decently plenty of, but im doing a psychic run of platinum rn for example and i only had 1 for the first gym (abra....) and even though im about to hit the 4th gym, i still dont have a full team of 6 (..unless you count unown.....). or, in scarlet rn im doing a blind bug run, and the only reasons i got the fire badge were a larvesta (which i was pretty excited to find cus i didnt know they were in this region) and an over-leveled surskit. your character may experience having to train their pokemon up past what they think they'll need, or training on specific pokemon a la in-game EV training, or having to hope to find a very specifc mon :)

as far as steamrolling gym leaders who are weak to your character's type, i will say my scarlet bugs lost to the grass gym my first go cus his last mon threw me off xD so it wouldnt be unbelievable for a leader to pull something out of their ass at the last minute <_<U...
