Trailers and News Discussion

We don't know that the final challenge is limited to battling a single trainer. Reserve your disappointment for when we know more.

Also, complaining that 7 is less than 8 is just a little silly.

So? The Gumshoo/Raticate battle looks harder than, say, Cheren's gym.

Well it still is one less challenge than the usual gyms which is kinda sad a little :(

7 times battling only one Totem Pokémon and ally is a lot less than 8 times beating a team of 2-5 Pokémon though. You're right about us not knowing what the final challenge will be, but still. A lot of people were expecting way more trials than just 7, so it's natural they're disappointed.

Only because the hosts suck :p You get the TM Brick Break during the trial, beating it should be easy as hell. Also, every trial will only have one Totem Pokémon, so will it be harder than a gym leader with 4/5 Pokémon too? Kinda doubt it.

They aren't directly comparable. And after how easy gyms have been for a good while, I think we should be more concerned with quality than quantity.

Fair enough, but it is your choice to use Makuhita/whatever and the TM. You don't have to resort to that.

Gym leaders have used a maximum of 3 Pokemon since BW. Late Totem Pokemon may very well have two allies, and of course it's harder when you have to face more than one at once. Finally, the Totem gets a stat boost.

Ah, thanks for the link! I couldn't watch the stream. Now I can watch it at my leisure :)

Well if there's 7 trails, 4 Kahuna's and 1 final challenge, that's less than 8 gyms, 4 Elite four members and 1 Champion. That's why it's 'only'. You don't battle Ilima either, so it's just the trial and beating a Totem Pokémon and its ally.

You're assuming that the Kahunas are the same thing as the elite four. I don't think we've seen anything that would suggest that's the case.

Could somebody make a list with all the new details we learned today? Even the smallest details.

It's not complete because I couldn't watch the whole stream but for what it's worth I did take note that Makuhita was #56 in the Melemele pokedex and Meowth was #45.

Did the datamining give us dex numbers or just a list of Pokemon available per island? (should probably answer in spoilers since this isn't a datamine thread)

Ok, if there are going to be only 7 trials, then I wonder how they will be distributed.
If we have Ilima on Melemele, and Mallow, Lana, and Kiawe on Akala, then there's only 3 left for the other two islands. As a guess, I think that Sophacles and the ghost girl will be on the big island, and there will be one trial on the most west island?

Well so far the only thing we know is that there's the Island Challenge and after that maybe a Champion, nothing more. So at the moment there's more suggesting that there won't be more than that there will be. Either way, I'm rather disappointed now and happily surprised later, than being even more disappointed when I'm playing the game itself ;)

Actually, do we even have confirmation there will be trials on all islands? Cause there's indeed not a lot of trials left for the two remaining islands, so it could be that the last island only has the Champion/whatever and the Legendaries, right? The point of the trials is that you get access to the next island, but there isn't a next island anymore when you reach the last one. Everyone keeps saying we'll have four Kahuna's, but I've just realised I don't think we even know that for sure...

EDIT: Nevermind, website does say each island has a Kahuna :p Well maybe just a Kahuna then (maybe the Champion is a Kahuna?), but no trials? It's just so weird if the second island is the one with the most trials...

Also, has the rustling grass feature from BW returned? Or is it a different feature?

Sorry just woke up but if you see the battle royale, could anyone explain why Normal attack have no effect on Exeggutor after that first Super Fang.

I first thought so too, but you don't actually walk into the rustling grass, the Pokémon in it just rushes at you as soon as you come close/enter the grass. During the trial you also see an Alolan Rattata rushing out you before you're even at the hole.

I think it's just a fun thing added to make the world feel more real, both Pokémon that came rushing at you weren't rare or had higher levels, iirc.

Regarding there being 7 trials, I'm just a little sad that there is only 1 trial captain we haven't seen yet :/

So I've paused on the coffee shop to see what it is they sell. First option is エネココア (Enekokoa), which roughly translated is Skitty Cocoa. 2 is パイルジュース (Pairujuusu), Pinap Juice, and third is ロズレイティー (Rozureitii), Roserade Tea.

I don't know what it is any of these do, when ordering the Skitty Cocoa, they go into a long spiel, and I don't think I have the skill to translate all of that.

Money is on the girl with the bonnet in the demo trailer. She looks like a ground specialist due to having a mudsdale.

The other Kahuna are probably the guy that pops up out of nowhere on the house boat and
the unknown "Sonic" model.

So if that's the case we've seen all of them including all of the Kahuna :( .

I wonder if corocoro in November even needs to give out news for SM. It be only three days before the game release for most countries.

They've always had one last reveal before release, if the game doesn't come out BEFORE Coro Coro. Even then, I don't think they spoil the crucial things. It's always the month after release that they cover all the other secrets of the game.

Yikes, Gamefreak really settin out to make the most boring games possible

It's annoying having to restrict yourself to make the in-game anything near meaningful; it'd be so much fun to be able to pick any pokemon and just play the game like it's meant to be played. I shouldn't have to purposefully choose the weakest mons or impose weird, annoying rules on myself to APPROACH a challenging experience (and yet STILL coast through the game), because by that point it barely feels fun and barely like an adventure.

I will say though that single battles (which GF insists on making every gym leader for some reason) are the easiest, most exploitable battle style and every gym has been kinda a joke for a while now. I do think battling a Totem pokemon with its allies out on the field should still be more
emot-airquote.gif
challenging
emot-airquote.gif
than a gym battle since you're battling 1 vs X, and because the main opponent pokemon should theoretically be much stronger than you. But that'd only be if GF gave the totem pokemon good stats and more than one ally

EDIT: Just saw the stream why is the first totem level 12.................................................

27th reveal probably
  • Alolan Persian, Alolan Digglet, and Alolan Dugtrio
  • Morelull and Salandit's evo
  • The new sea urchin and its evo.
  • Some random reveal.

I wonder if these are technically datamine spoilers I'm really excited to learn about these pokemon though; having names and abilities is gonna be dope

Prediction: Dazzling for Alolan Dugtrio and a very high speed stat; maybe Ground/Fairy LOL
