So I saw this one post on Reddit where everyone gave their reasons for why each type is effective/not very effective against the other. Example: Fire > Grass = leaves are easily burnt; trees catch it easy and spread wildfires, or Electric > Water = water conducts electricity and lightning is drawn to it, etc., etc..

Let's hear your thoughts for each type, Poké fans! I'll post mine later. I'm particularly interested in seeing your thoughts on Fairies, as they're essentially the Light-type variant of Dark-types and are more fantasy than anything.

Dark means evil\corrupt. For esample like when I am corrupt by my Susan obsession. The opposite would be lawful, lucid fighting, such as normal and fighting type

Fairy is more like... love\light elemental magic? Like sailor moon\chibi moon\chibi chibi's attacks.

Fairy > Dark - power of love beats a supervillain
Fairy > Dragon - it also beats a powerful instinctual monster
Fairy > Fight - which also often includes humanoid, superstrong types such as many of the humans turned monsters in magical girl shows

Fairy > Fire - light makes fire spread
Fairy > Poison - someone pure can be poisoned and get corrupt, like me with the sims 3
Fairy > Steel - light\love magic cannot penetrate armor

Bug > Fairy - small powerless instinctual critters are nothing compared to beings of light and love, generally bug is suppose to be a weak type
Dark > Fairy - the magic girls always trump the supervillain
Fight > Fairy - they trump the strongman type monsters too

Poison > Fairy - a magic potion was often the antidote to fairy magic
Steel > Fairy - steel\metal was often the weakness of fairies
Dragon > Fairy - fairies can protect from dragon attacks, magic girls tend to win over the instinctual monsters

It'll be too extensive to list all types, so I'll list Electric which is curious in its one weakness: Ground.

Electric > Water = water conducts electricity, duh
Electric > Flying = birds don't wanna get zapped

Electric < Electric = electricity doesn't care about more electricity
Electric < Grass = a plant doesn't mind voltage provided it doesn't start wildfires
Electric < Ground = ground is the lowest point and rarely gets hit by lightning, and nothing happens to it if it does. (Rocks should really get an immunity too)
Electric < Dragon = Dragons, being mythical creatures, are known for being resistant to all the basic elementals, such as Water, Fire and even Electric, which vaguely follows classical elements

Ground > Electric = earthquakes destroy power lines, and directly cut off all source of power from the ground, which is where majority of electricity is stored or generated

Dark > Fairy - the magic girls always trump the supervillain

Dragon > Fairy - fairies can protect from dragon attacks, magic girls tend to win over the instinctual monsters

Fairies can be guys, too...

Fairies can be guys, too...
Sylveon is a boy (a 7\1 gender ratio in the games but some eeveelutions are usually female in the anime and pokespe) and he's still magical girl themed
So technically, a Magical Boy.

Steel: one of the most resistant things on earth.
Fire>Steel: fire melts Steel
Fighting>Steel: given enough force (and time), steel can be bent, broken, or twisted.
Ground>Steel: steel needs support to withstand earthly movements.

Steel>Ice: there are steel tools to cut through ice
Steel>Rock : and rock
Steel>Fairy: fairies are weak to objects created by civilization (from swords to cannons)

Poisoned Steel: Corrosion causes steel to become weaker.

Here's a fun one:

Psychic > Fighting = the pen is mightier than the sword... er, the mind. The ability to transform mental acuity into magic hits meatheads hard
Psychic > Poison = perhaps they've been enlightened to overcome disease and poison? In any case, they can hit Poison from afar without worry of direct contact. One of Poison's only weaknesses, oddly

Psychic < Psychic = telepath vs. telepath, they both know their field, so...
Psychic < Steel = Steel has no mind with which to penetrate
Psychic < Dark = mental powers are refused by the darkness in their heart (lol kingdom hearts)

Dark > Psychic = deceptive as Darks are, they probably play a lot of mind-games
Ghost > Psychic = Psychics could be seen as spirit channelers, and there's a good chance that spirit proves too much for them
Bug > Psychic = bugs are distracting and annoying, making it very hard to focus, especially if one's buzzing in your ear

Fighting < Psychic = wildly swinging at a magician will get you no where

Challenge accepted, I´ll try to write my opinion on what Pokémon from every type and Attacks from every type are, and what energy they each use. (Electric uses electricity, Fighting uses physical force, Fire uses high temperatures, Ice low ones and so on) Also how they counteract.

This is entirely my speculation!

Let´s get going!

Pokémon-Types:

Normal: Pokémon without special abilities, like cats or cows, you wouldn't let them fight in real life.
Fire: Pokémon whose body temperature is exceptionally high, they have a natural affinity for creating heat. Also on most of them, they have flames in or on some part of their body.
Fighting: Pokémon who train themselves to be very strong and durable and build up great muscle mass.
Water: Pokémon whose habitat is primarily in water, and who are very good swimmers. They usually have a very high amount of fluid in their body.
Flying: Pokémon who can fly or create winds to help them float who don´t have levitate as an ability.
Grass: Pokémon whose body is at least partly a plant, usually able to do photosynthesis, though this is not a necessity.
Poison: These Pokémon have the ability to produce strong toxins and poisons, while having a natural immunity against their own ones. They also mostly are covered in some sort of poisonous mucus.
Electric: Pokémon that have the ability to produce electricity, they use it to fight, prepare food, hunt or even communicate.
Ground: Pokémon whose living room is the underground, and who are adapted to living in these environments, so they for example avoid unstable caverns and so on. They are very robust and heavy.
Psychic: Pokémon whose powers are not fully understood yet are grouped under the psychic type. Sure there are people who claim to have these powers themselves, and it is true in most cases, but scientists don't really believe them. It is however known that they draw their power from their mind.
Rock: These Pokémon are made at least partly of inorganic non-metal materials.
Ice: They survive and thrive in cold climates, and have a very low body temperature too.
Bug: Pokémon that have an exoskeleton made of chitin (Yes there are also hairy bugs, their hairs are made of the material too) and behave similar to bugs. They live in trees and bushes.
Dragon: Pokémon that draw their power from the Dragon Force (That´s a thing, watch the Victini movie) and are poikilotherm, beings that change their body temperature based on the surroundings.
Ghost: Pokémon that are created when someone dies. They get their energy from the dead, which is why many of them kill. Their body is at least partly made of gas.
Dark: In Japanese this is actually the evil type, so it actually describes Pokémon whose actions are considered outside of ethics and moral by humans, and quite frankly, they are afraid of them and use them in scary stories.
Steel: Not necessarily steel, this type describes any Pokémon whose body is composed at least partly of inorganic metals.
Fairy: Pokémon that seemingly represent light and happiness, and those who are just there to make others happy.

Attack-Types:

Normal: Normal untrained attacks, who draw their destructive power from kinetic energy.
Fire: Attacks based on heat or fire, they draw their destructive power from thermal energy.
Fighting: Moves utilizing special combat techniques, also draw their destructive power from kinetic energy.
Water: These attacks use high pressurized water to attack the opponent with. They draw their destructive power from kinetic energy.
Flying: These moves utilize winds or airborne attacks, usually without the requirement of ground contact. They draw their destructive power from kinetic energy.
Grass: They attack by manipulating plants, using products of their floral parts like spores and seeds and can draw power from the sunlight doing this. They draw their destructive power from kinetic energy and illnesses
Poison: The attacks are poison based and use body created poisons as well as just dirty substances. They draw their destructive power from illnesses.
Electric: Pokémon that have the ability to produce electricity, they use it to fight, prepare food, hunt or even communicate.
Ground: These attacks manipulate the ground, the battle field, and can shape and move it to their will, creating movement and similar things, which can damage the opponent. They draw their destructive power from kinetic energy.
Psychic: These beings manipulate the mind and body of their opponent with their psychic power. They draw their destructive power from their mind.
Rock: This type has attacks which uses inorganic non metal materials as attack weapons. They draw their destructive power from kinetic energy.
Ice: They attack by creating low temperatures which are damaging to the opponent. They draw their destructive power from thermal energy.
Bug: These attacks use primarily the body parts and body fluids of the Pokémon as a weapon instead of a body part, say X-Scissor uses Blades a Pokémon has as Blades rather than as hands. They draw their destructive power from kinetic energy.
Dragon:They use Dragon Force to attack. They draw their destructive power from the Dragon force.
Ghost: These attacks are primarily fear based and try to scare the enemy to death. (Or at least defeat him) They also utilize live force of now dead people to fuel energy attacks with energy. They draw their destructive power from fear and death energy.
Dark: They use cheating attacks, which are meant to confuse or damage the enemy unnoticed, just like your everyday burglar or trickster. They draw their destructive power from fear and kinetic energy.
Steel: The attacks don´t really require metal, although they often do. They can also be executed with something as hard as metal, at least a weapon to execute the attack should be present. They draw their destructive power from kinetic energy.
Fairy: They attack with light or seducing, and have more healing attacks rather that actual attacks. They draw their destructive power from light.

Now that that's done, let´s get to the fun part!

Attacker - Defender

Normal<Rock | If a normal person punches a rock, it's not going to do much damage.
NormalXGhost | Normal punches go through gas.
Normal<Steel | If a normal person punches a metal, it's not going to do much damage.
Fire<Rock | Rocks are good at keeping out heat, so a Rock skin or body keeps most of the heat out.
Fire>Bug | Because of their shell they heat up really quickly and keep that heat, so it does more damage.
Fire>Steel | Because the metal parts heat up and stay heated, they affect the Pokémon for longer.
Fire<Fire | These Pokémon are used to high temperatures.
Fire<Water | Because of the high amount of fluid acting as a coolant, the Pokémon won´t get hot that fast.
Fire>Grass | Plants act as a fuel source, thus making the flames last longer.
Fire>Ice | These Pokémon are used to low temperatures, so high ones will damage them, since they are not adapted as well to warmer zones.
Fire<Dragon | Since they are poikilotherm, their body needs heat to keep their body temperature, so they can take and absorb a certain amount of heat.
Fighting>Normal | In a match-up of a normal person against a person knowing martial arts, the martial arts user would win.
Fighting<Flying | Since they are in the air and constantly moving, it is harder to properly execute a fighting technique.
Fighting<Poison | Most poison Pokémon are covered in things like slime or mucus, which makes them harder to get a hold of.
Fighting>Rock | Skilled martial artists can break rocks very easily.
Fighting<Bug | Fighting moves probably don´t work as well on the unique body-build of bug.
FightingXGhost | Normal punches go through gas.
Fighting>Steel | Skilled martial artists can bend metals very easily.
Fighting<Psychic | A tactician analyzing the fighter with his mind is at an advantage against said fighter.
Fighting>Ice | Like rocks, a skilled martial artists can break ice very easily.
Fighting>Dark | These Pokémon aren't very strong, hence why they resort to sneaky moves, so a strong punch would probably crack a few bones.
Fighting<Fairy | Since their primary attacks are based on light, they can emit a blinding light which will let the fighter probably miss some of his attack points.
Water>Ground | Water can wash away the ground the Pokémon is so reliant on.
Water>Rock | If water gets into the pores of rock type Pokémon, they will probably have some of their inner parts damaged.
Water>Fire | Water extinguishes or at least lowers their fire by removing the contact to oxygen.
Water<Water | Water-Pokémon do know how to operate around water, since it is their primary habitat.
Water<Grass | Plants use water to create energy, so most of the done damage is immediately regenerated.
Water<Dragon | They draw from the Dragon Force, which shapes the land, and as such also controls water to some extend.
Flying>Fighting | The attacks can bring their enemies to high distances, which they are not used to.
Flying<Rock | Wind can't really penetrate an armor.
Flying>Bug | Birds hunt bugs, and since the behavior of bug Pokémon is similar to bugs, they are afraid of flying Pokémon.
Flying<Steel | Wind can´t really penetrate an armor.
Flying>Grass | Winds can easily rip off plants, while other, more precise attacks like punches and beams can´t.
Flying<Electric | Creating bolts of lightning in air requires to modify the air first, so it conducts the electricity, giving Electric Pokémon some control over the air.
Grass<Flying | Because it manipulates plants as attack weapons, flying enemies can only be hit with the upmost and weakest branches.
Grass<Poison | Because it uses plants, which partly work due to their generated toxin, which mos poison Pokémon are resistant to, this does less damage.
Grass>Ground | When manipulating Plants, one can also manipulate the roots, which in turn can be used to manipulate the ground.
Grass>Rock | If an attack is able to plant some spores or seeds on an rock enemy, they will sprout, and the roots will damage him.
Grass<Bug | Since Bugs live in plants, they of course can defend themselves from them.
Grass<Steel | Since steel is pretty solid, it is hard for plants to find their footing, so any additional damage done by attaching themselves to the opponent is eliminated.
Grass<Fire | Plants don't thrive well with the heat emitted by fire Pokémon.
Grass>Water | Plants absorb the body fluids of the enemy, causing him to dehydrate.
Grass<Grass | Each of the enemies has antidotes for poisonous plants and can control the plants themselves, so it isn't really possible to do to much damage to the enemy.
Grass<Dragon | They draw from the Dragon Force, which shapes the land, and as such also controls plants to some extend.
Poison<Poison | Poison Pokémon usually have antidotes or resistances for their own poison.
Poison<Ground | Since they are so robust, it´s hard to get Poison through their skin.
Poison<Rock | Since they are so robust, it´s hard to get Poison through their skin.
Poison<Ghost | Since Ghosts are gaseous, it's hard to get Poison into their system.
PoisonXSteel | It may be hard to penetrate tough skin or Rocks, who have pores, but you can't get poison through solid metal.
Poison>Grass | Poisoning a Grass Pokémon also Poisons the Plants living within it, on which the Pokémon depends for living.
Poison>Fairy | Since they represent happiness, any illness will make them less able to spread said happiness.
Electric>Flying | Since they don´t have contact to the ground, the electricity cannot flow off into the earth, but rather stays in the Pokémon longer and exits it as spark.
ElectricXGround | Since they are basically always buried in ground, electric attack will immediate flow off into the ground, before even damaging the Pokémon.
Electric>Water | Water conducts electricity, and since they are water for the most part, electricity gets conducted through them, so it decides to go the route through their body.
Electric<Grass | The plants in the bodies of these Pokémon aren´t good conductors, so the electricity will search for another route.
Electric<Electric | Since electricity is such an integral part of their life, they must have developed some isolation to it.
Electric>Dragon | As Dragon Force is its own kind of energy, electricity can just be converted to it.
GroundXFlying | Attacks manipulating the ground can't hit a flying opponent.
Ground>Poison | When letting the ground absorb the poison a Pokémon is secreting, it will have less of a protective layer.
Ground>Rock | Since ground based attacks are able to create high pressures, they can most likely break the rocks these Pokémon carry.
Ground<Bug | Most Bug tend to keep their altitude, rarely leaving trees, with some even flying, so ground based attacks don't affect them as much.
Ground>Steel | Since ground based attacks are able to create high pressures, they can most likely bend the metals these Pokémon carry.
Ground>Fire | Part of the ground move set is the creation of dusts or sands, and these can be used to extinguish the flames such Pokémon have on their body.
Ground<Plants | Since the plants mentioned before have roots in the ground, ground moves have limited "movement abilities" against the other side.
Ground>Electric | Ground attacks force the enemy to be grounded, so the produced electricity has no way of escaping the Pokémon's body and are damaging it.
Psychic>Fighting | A tactician analyzing the fighter with his mind is at an advantage against said fighter.
Psychic>Poison | A smart fighter will be able to properly handle poisonous enemies.
Psychic<Steel | A good brain can't really do much against an armored enemy.
Psychic<Psychic | When both sides are smart, no one has any advantages.
PsychicXDark | Since the Psychics main attribute is intelligence, they can't really do anything, when they are tricked, which means their brain is overpowered.
Rock<Fighting | Fighters train themselves to be tough, so rocks thrown at them doesn't really affect them.
Rock>Flying | When a thrown Rock breaks on impact, its pieces will weigh the flyer down, causing him to fall.
Rock<Ground | With rocks being part of the ground, adapted enemies know how to defend themselves.
Rock>Bug | Rocks easily break the shell a bug-Pokémon has.
Rock<Steel | An armor can fend of Rocks rather easily.
Rock>Fire | Part of the rock move-set is the creation of dusts or sands, and these can be used to extinguish the flames such Pokémon have on their body.
Rock>Ice | Hurling a rock at the icy outer shell these Pokémon produce will probably crack it.
Ice>Flying | In low tempered zones winged beings don't have as much updraft and will probably fall.
Ice>Ground | A sudden lowering in temperature can really affect the circulations of a heavy and slow Pokémon.
Ice<Steel | Ice can`t really penetrate any armor.
Ice<Fire | The attacks will heighten in temperature when approaching a hot Pokémon.
Ice<Water | Since these Pokémon live in water, and ice is just cold water, they can operate around it.
Ice>Grass | Plants don't thrive in cold environments.
Ice<Ice | Ice Pokémon are adapted to colder environments.
Ice>Dragon | Since they are poikilotherm, their body needs heat to keep their body temperature, so they cannot take any coldness.
Bug<Fighting | Their moves can´t do much damage on a robust fighter, since they are based on using body-parts as weapons.
Bug<Flying | Due to their bug-like behavior, they are afraid of birds.
Bug<Poison | Since most poison Pokémon use the Poison to hunt smaller Pokémon, bugs inclusive, they are resistant against their defenses.
Bug<Ghosts | They can't do much against gases, but things like toxins may still affect them.
Bug<Steel | Bug-Attacks can´t really penetrate an armor.
Bug<Fire | The immense heat emitted by fire Pokémon weakens the close combat bug.
Bug>Grass | Due to their bug-like behavior, they are eating plants and thus their weapons are specialized on plant damaging.
Bug>Psychic | Since bugs are a primordial fear, their presence weakens the mind of psychics and lets their defense down.
Bug>Dark | Since bugs are a primordial fear, their presence weakens the mind of dark types and gets their defense down.
Bug>Fairy | Fairies use light, and because of the bug like mind, they are distracted by it.
Dragon<Steel | The Dragon Force isn´t made to control metals, but rather nature.
Dragon>Dragons | Each of the opponents can manipulate the Dragon Force in the others body, so they do more damage.
DragonXFairy | Fairies have their own power, and as such can´t interact with the Dragon Force.
GhostXNormal | Much of the ability of ghost types is based on fear, and if one does not believe in a ghost, this fear does not exist.
Ghost>Ghost | Each of the opponents can manipulate the Life Force in the others body, so they do more damage.
Ghost>Psychic | Since ghosts are a primordial fear, their presence weakens the mind of psychics and lets their defense down.
Ghost<Dark | Evil Pokémon often have a distinct knowledge of other evil beings, such as ghosts, so they can defend themselves from them.
Dark<Fighting | Their sneaky attacks aren't good against robust hand to hand combatants.
Dark>Ghost | Evil Pokémon often have a distinct knowledge of other evil beings, such as ghosts, so they can harm them the right way.
Dark>Psychic | Since evil beings are a primordial fear, their presence weakens the mind of psychics and lets their defense down.
Dark<Dark | They know the sneaky tricks of the opponent.
Dark<Fairy | They can produce light, so the evil Pokémon can´t hide in the shadows to attack, which much of their attacks are based on.
Steel>Rock | Metals are generally harder than rocks.
Steel<Steel | It would be like an armored knight being hit by a sword. It absorbs most of the damage.
Steel<Fire | When approaching the Pokémon, their body heats up, which makes them slower and weaker.
Steel<Water | Since water Pokémon have a moist and slimy body, weapon based attacks will glide off the sides.
Steel<Electric l When approaching the Pokémon, their body becomes charged, which makes them slower and weaker.
Steel>Ice | Metals are generally harder than ice.
Steel>Fairy | Fairies produce light, which steel attacks just reflect, doing damage to the light emitter.
Fairy>Fighting | Blinding an opponent is usually the way to go, when trying to get a good hit.
Fairy<Poison | Since they represent happiness, any illness will make them less able to spread said happiness.
Fairy<Steel | Fairies produce light, which metals just reflect, blinding the light emitter.
Fairy<Fire | Fire Pokémon produce their own light, so they are harder to be blinded.
Fairy>Dragon | No amount of Dragon Force protects from Light, since they are completely different kinds of Energy.
Fairy>Dark | They can produce light, so the evil Pokémon can´t hide in the shadows to defend itself.

I know a lot of this seems to be quite ridiculous, but some of the weaknesses or strengths are really dumb, to say the least. Rock Bug is my favorite of these.

Very expansive. Made my page stop just to click reply! It's nice to see someone take such a vested interest in this thread; I particularly like your theories for Dark-types. Dragon Force seems kind of cure-all though, even if it is a real thing. I always assumed Dragons are magical and greatly resist the elements, but I guess if there's a name of it...
