Re: UK Video Game Championships qualifier winner disqualified: Play! Pokémon manager

Not surprising. I mean, if he's getting kicked out of the tournaument, of course he'd be banned from related events.

And of course, he comes with an strawman argument about "giving bad image to Spanish players", nevermind he is virtually implying he's the face of Spanish players with that very statment (which is, in itself, incredibly ethnocentric). And that, you know, he crapped in the hall.

In any case, he was a moron, got punished for it, and now is crying for not being let do stupid things or trying to gain sympathy of others for the sake of trolling.
Or, if his version is true, then it's still his own fault because he still admitted to it and all what comes with it, and by doing so he retroactively contributed to it. (Not like I believe it anyway)

So no, he deserves no sympathy.

If it's true that it was his friend who did, and that he took responsibility for it, then must also be prepared to accept the consequences. I don't know why he alleges that there's been racism towards Spanish players. People have been ridiculing them yes, but that's not because they were Spanish. It seems like such a shame that it's ended like this for him too, he's one of the world's best Pokémon players. Just take a look at his sig from Smogon:

"VGC 2012 National Birmingham - 1st Place
Wi-fi 2011 Worlds Autumn Friendly - 1st Place
VGC 2011 Worlds San Diego - 3rd Place
VGC 2011 National Birmingham - 1st Place
VGC 2010 Worlds Hawaii - 29th Place
VGC 2010 National Madrid - 2nd Place"

It's quite impressive. I hope that he matures a bit and TPCi let him compete again, but he should at the very least be banned for this season, possibly even the next one too.

I'm not the first to point this out, but from a financial perspective, the only reason TPCi hold these tournaments is to promote the games. If one of the competitors does something to hurt the brand, you can bet they're going to distance themselves from them. They certainly won't want to be seen rewarding said individual with a free trip to Hawaii.

The banning might seem like an overly harsh punishment for some silly behavior, and I do feel sorry for the player in question, but from a purely pragmatic point of view, TPCi did the sensible thing.

Wow, this is utterly unbelievable. I honestly thought that this was going to involve cheating or using a hack but not...this. This is just wrong on so many levels. If he really did this, then he certainly deserves the ban and I can't say that I feel sorry for him. (I work retail; we deal with sort of crap on a daily basis.)

Seems like "someone" (It's either Ruben or a troll) is making a petition for the removal of his disqualification.

Personally, I hope the ban never gets removed since this was a very stupid thing to be doing in the first place. If it was something minor like saying a swear word by accident or having a small arguement with another player, I might understand. But throwing his feces? There has to be a point where a line has been crossed, and I think that well passes it.

Another thing that bothers me is what Ruben himself says in his defense in this article:
"Pokémon is like my life."
That's just sad.

And here's a video of him battling in the UK VGC 2012 Masters Finals two days ago:

Reading the article which ^ gave a hyperlink to Ruben says that the vandalism had nothing to do with Pokémon or the tournament but I think that he is incorrect because it was disturbing other competitors who stayed in the same hotel such as @Joshawott.

The thing I don't understand is, he was Spanish but in the UK qualifier???
People in Europe can attend any European qualifier they wish, granted they have the time and money to do so. I know people who are planning on going to all of them (The UK one is already done, then there's Germany, France, Spain and Italy).
So are they distributing the Larvitar in all languages at each qualifier, or just the local language?

I'm not entirely sure if I'm honest. If I remember correctly, wonder cards are language blocked though.

For an example of how close I was, the difference in my room number and theirs was either 5 or 3; they were on the odd side and I was on the even, so essentially, about 3 rooms apart.

There's been a lot of talk about how an indefinite ban is unfair and to be honest, I do think that the decision is pretty heavy handed. I would have been all for a ban for this year, but indefinite?

Let's have a look at this statement:

We can't tolerate these attempts at discrediting the Spanish players (some of the most skilled players in Europe)...

So is he saying the disqualification racially motivated and/or just a conspiracy theory designed to remove the obvious champions?

I have not had anything to do with what happened in the hotel...

And then...

we were in our room and we were speaking and talking a little bit loudly... one of my friends took a "poo" and left it at the corridor, wrapped in paper. I told my friend not to do that but he did it anyway

One second he claims it had nothing to do with him, then he's saying he was in the hotel room when it happened...

it was so embarrasing I couldn't say anything at the moment... I said it was the one who had done it because my friend was ashamed to admit he had done it

Obvious question: What the hell was wrong with the toilet!? I just love how the way it's presented, this is how the incident happened:

Everyone is discussing Pokemon Black and White 2.
Ruben: So I wondering what moves Black Kyurem can... wait, does anyone smell something?
Friend 1: Yeah, I can. It smells like... oh my god, it can't be.
Friend 2: Has somebody... dirtied themselves?
Friend 3: Sorry guys, my bad. I needed to go and pulled down my trousers but forgot to go to the bowl. Oh, I'm so embarrassed.
Ruben: That's disgusting. You should be ashamed.
Everyone just looks about.
Friend 2: Shouldn't someone clean it up?
Ruben: No way, it's too embarrassing.

Meanwhile, underneath the hotel:
b5-evil-shoe.jpg

"These Spanish players are proving to be far too skilled. We need to disqualify them on trumped up charges!

I went to Hawaii in 2010, and I went to San Diego in 2011, for my pokemon is like my life, I ask please do not make me this .. I won again in Uk and I deserve to go to Hawaii and represent Europe in the pokemon world...

"There an Hawaiian hotel that's waiting to have my crap smeared all over it"

Seriously, this statement just does nothing but invite more ridicule. Personally, if he wants to recover from this I think he should lie low, hope the ban is eventually repealed and for god's sake, try not to be such an arsehole in future.

Yeah, I thought it was David Schwimmer (the actor) too. But seriously; throwing shit around the hallways? That's just disgusting.

They are. Well, not just Wonder Cards but events in general. Since you said you know people who will be going to each countries' qualifier, do you know if they could check this?

There's been a lot of talk about how an indefinite ban is unfair and to be honest, I do think that the decision is pretty heavy handed. I would have been all for a ban for this year, but indefinite?
Indefinite =/= infinite. Pretty much, it generally means they haven't decided how long it will be.

I'll have to ask around, but sure.

We'll have to wait and see when/if TPCi lift it then.
