UN votes for new sanctions on Iran over nuclear issue

The UN Security Council has voted in favour of fresh sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

The council voted 12 to two, with one abstention, in favour of a fourth round of sanctions, including tighter finance curbs and an expanded arms embargo.
US President Barack Obama said the sanctions were an unmistakable message on stopping the spread of nuclear arms.
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the sanctions should be thrown in the dustbin like a "used handkerchief".
The US and its allies fear Iran is secretly trying to build a nuclear bomb, but Tehran insists its programme is aimed solely at peaceful energy use.

Heavy weapons

The Security Council resolution was opposed by Turkey and Brazil. They had earlier brokered a deal with Iran on uranium enrichment. Lebanon abstained.

The new sanctions were passed after being watered down during negotiations with Russia and China on Tuesday.
There are no crippling economic sanctions and there is no oil embargo.
Those passed include prohibiting Iran from buying heavy weapons such as attack helicopters and missiles.
They also toughen rules on financial transactions with Iranian banks and increase the number of Iranian individuals and companies that are targeted with asset freezes and travel bans.
There is also a new framework of cargo inspections to detect and stop Iran's acquisition of illicit materials.
Mr Obama accused Iran's leaders of "hiding behind outlandish rhetoric".

Well, the Brazillian and Turkish no votes were a bit expected. But yeah, it's been watered down to head off the Vetoes so we'll see how it turns out. :/

Sadly with statements like "No amount of pressure and mischief will be able to break our nation's determination to pursue and defend its legal and inalienable rights," Khazaee said. "Iran is one of the most powerful and stable countries in the region and never bowed — and will never bow — to the hostile actions and pressures by these few powers and will continue to defend its rights."

It doesn't sound like they are too scared of the sanctions, and really they shouldn't have to be, they have China, Russia, and Turkey defending them from anything major by the rest of the world. At some point very soon sadly this is going to end in one way or another, and most options are quickly leading to bloodshed.

Obviously this shows Barack Obama's plan to marginalize Iran was a huge failure, or something.

Amazing what a little consensus-building can do...

If the plan is to continue to use international sanctions to weaken Iran, especially very watered down sanctions, then that is a plan that is in place since George Bush's late term.

In fact it should be easier now because of how increasingly belligerent Iran has gotten, and how much closer they are to making a nuke.

More of a armed military strike at Iran, at this point it seems like the only way we will be able to stop them.

Unfortunately, a surgical strike by America might be needed before Israel decides to level a city or two.

Though, we might find a diplomatic solution in the other directions. If the stick doesn't work, we might try holding out some carrots. Iran is relatively stable and was an ally in the war on terror before Bush burned that bridge. There has to be something Tehran wants more than nukes.

Actually, Turkey doesn't support Iran at all. They only voted against the sanctions because it stopped the plans of it and Brazil to regulate Iranian nuclear power. For the most part Turkey comes really close to western democracies and might show the most similarities with the U.S. Deep South.

China, on the other hand is a whole different story, and has veto right in the Security Council.

Well if it is Israel that strikes at Iran, they do have a history of precise targeting with as minimum loss of life possible when it comes to Nuclear Facility attacks. So hopefully they will show the same amount of restraint and planning they showed when they destroyed Saddam's facilities.

Although the problem is, Iran's facilities are deep underground as was revealed a few months ago.. :U

And surgical strikes would only hold back the program for a few years by some estimates. D:

Military technology has expanded since the 80s, bombs can penetrate far deep into the Earth and destroy sites. Maybe with a combination between a attack, and sanctions taken up outside of the UN ( Since it has been shown to be powerless and weak ) Iran may finally come around.

Well, I think we need to tell them to stop 2 or three times, and if they blatantly ignore us (just like Saddam Hussein did) use military force. We won the Gulf War and liberated Kuwait, right? And I bet 3\4 of their army are radical terrorists. It's the same deal here. They're doing nuclear missile tests. They're probably going to fire one at the US or Britain. We need to oust Achmed Dinejad just like we did Saddam Hussein in 2003-4. Maybe if he is found guilty of war crimes we should imprison him. We shouldn't kill him unless he actually fires a missile though.

This issue has popped up twice before, it seems this one may actually be real.

In the week that the UN Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions on Tehran, defence sources in the Gulf say that Riyadh has agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow corridor of its airspace in the north of the country to shorten the distance for a bombing run on Iran. To ensure the Israeli bombers pass unmolested, Riyadh has carried out tests to make certain its own jets are not scrambled and missile defence systems not activated. Once the Israelis are through, the kingdom’s air defences will return to full alert.

“The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way,” said a US defence source in the area. “They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren’t scrambled and no one gets shot down. This has all been done with the agreement of the [US] State Department.”

Sources in Saudi Arabia say it is common knowledge within defence circles in the kingdom that an arrangement is in place if Israel decides to launch the raid. Despite the tension between the two governments, they share a mutual loathing of the regime in Tehran and a common fear of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “We all know this. We will let them [the Israelis] through and see nothing,” said one…

Questioned on the option of a Saudi flight path for Israeli bombers, Aharaon Zeevi Farkash, who headed military intelligence until 2006 and has been involved in war games simulating a strike on Iran, said: “I know that Saudi Arabia is even more afraid than Israel of an Iranian nuclear capacity.”

This thread is not about whether or not Israel will bomb Iran and how. Take it elsewhere if you want to discuss that.

I like how you don't even know that his name is not "Achmed Dinejad". It's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. And honestly, this is Iran, not Russia. Iran would go for Israel before they did anything else.
