Ok so the ultra recon squad came to alola for help stopping necrozma, I get that. But how do they not have any light? They still have their solgaleo/lunala to travel ultra space with. How does Necrozma stealing them steal the light? Does each world need a solgaleo/Lunala to have light?

Think Necrozma’s doing two different things there

So, the “light” that Alola is bathed in isn’t actual light as in like, photons and such. Necrozma’s not “turning off the sun” or anything like that. It’s more of an energy aura, which the Ultra Recon Squad can measure with their technology. Alola, and the Recon Squad’s own world in the past, were both shrouded in this energy. But it’s revealed that this light came from Necrozma long ago. It’s not from Solgaleo or Lunala. Those two do contain their own light, but the light that poured into Alola is Necrozma’s light, which came through the Ultra Wormholes that Solgaleo and Lunala used in order to travel to Alola.

And of course, when Necrozma arrives in Alola and takes possession of Solgaleo/Lunala, things don’t go dark right away. There’s a gap between it fusing with them and it turning Alola dark, in which you battle it as Dusk Mane/Dawn Wings. I think this reinforces the idea that Solgaleo and Lunala aren’t the “source” of Alola’s light, they’re just another source of light that Necrozma tries to hoard. Once you defeat it in Dusk Mane/Dawn Wings form, Necrozma gets desperate - that’s when it decides to suck up all of the light that was filling Alola as well, and runs away into another wormhole in order to get away from you.
