Jeremy had found a net in the lab and was using it to Collect the frogs, which he was putting in a closed container as he went. "How did she manage to let out 30 frogs..." Jeremy muttered in frustration.
"I don't know if he's into comic books, but he reads a lot and does movies, so he definitely knows plenty about characters and plots and stiff. Regardless you are an idiot. He's Robin's best friend yet favoritism doesn't pop into your mind. Instead its a matter of him liking comic books. Pathetic," Aphrodite commented as they walked.
"Doesn't pointing that out only prove him right?" Terrance asked Aphrodite rhetorically, knowing that this was in fact the case. "Granted you do have a point about Rafe knowing story structure and whatnot... but still, we don't want accusations of favoritism." He said quietly. "I just want to read some comic books, not deal with drama." Terrance added with a sigh, knowing that this was an impossibility at this point.
"I didn't mean to accuse him of such." Terrance softly clarified his position on the matter. He clearly didn't want to talk about it further as he was sure he would only cause tempers to continue to flare. He had never been very good at navigating fragile social situations, one of the many reasons he spent most of his time at school in his lab. No one disturbed him there and he was free to code, tinker and drink his Red Bull in peace.
"Because yes," was all Leo pointed out before following after Aphrodite. "Anyways let's break up and look around."
Tyson wandered on his own before deciding to head towards Luke's, Jordan's and Will's table first, a smirk on his face. "Hello there," he waved, causing Jordan to frown bitterly at his senior. "It's surprising to see the three of you together, I trust you did a wonderful job," he pointed out before grabbing one of the comic books set up. He looked at the cover of the comic showing a teenager with short spiky brown hair and clear blue eyes, he was wearing a black jacket over a red colored shirt with a crossed 0 on it and black jeans and was pointing a gleaming white gun at the reader. The title read Tiroteo. "Interesting," he pointed out while scratching his chin.
"It's not very comic book like in a sense, I added some inspiration from manga in the drawing style and tried to combine both aspects," Luke explained himself before looking at Will and Jordan. 'Jordan assisted me with some details as well as with some of the story, while Will helped me flesh out the character designs so that they would look perfect."
Tyson opened the comic book and began to carefully read through it, a curious expression on his face. "Okay, what is it about then?" he asked curiously.
"The story takes place in a future where the crime rate has increased exponentially as well as the rate of violence, of course most of this is kept under wraps from the normal population," he started explaining before raising his index finger. "The story is about a boy named Travis who, after being saved from some muggers by a mysterious old man ends up being thrown into this world of crime and survival, for being saved he has to in turn follow on the old man's footsteps as his student and learn his way around weapons and the underworld around him while also trying to handle his normal life."
"Well the action flows pretty well, the backstory is interesting but it seems pretty basic from first views," Tyson pointed out. "I mean normal guy gets thrown into an abnormal world, the art is pretty great, lots of attention to detail, the story is intriguing but I think you focused more on the story itself than the character at least in my opinion, I liked the old man though,' Tyson said, shocking Jordan with how quickly he read. "Drunk, inappropriate teachers aren't exactly new but I can tell there's more levels to his personality."
"Uh...thanks for your comments," Luke nodded his head nervously as he listened to Tyson.
"It's no problem," Tyson smiled kindly before putting the comic book down, though he really was just smiling out of consideration. "You guys did do a great job, I wonder if it's enough though," he pointed out with a smirk as he looked at Jordan and then at Will. "Anyways, I'll give my thoughts to the other judges once I'm done looking around."
Will listened to Tyson's critique, his blood boiling slightly with the meticulous negative comments he made. Once he had finished his piece. Will was agitated.
"I have no idea what qualms you have with our student organization." Will said to Tyson with a cold look. "But don't simply look for negatives simply because of our affiliation. I don't care if you an elite student or a high school drop out, but honestly, I feel that the other judges far more qualified to critique a comic then an athlete who probably couldn't even compare to the same artistic abilities of the art branch if they all had one arm tied behind their back and were blindfolded."
Aphrodite walked over to Zima and Robin first. She smiled at the two, Robin giving a shy smile in return, and Zima a tight one, nervous about the competition.
Aphrodite picked up the book and raised her eyebrow. In simple italic, bold, underlined lettering it said Different. "Interesting Title." The cover was slightly more extravagant. On the longest sides was ivy as a border, while the top and bottom were bordered by black feathers with the non soft part colored red. There was a hooded character in all black standing back to back with with a brown haired, green eyed girl holding a Venus flytrap. "Well judging by the use of borders on the cover I can already tell there is symbolism in the cover itself. The girl is looking at the Venus flytrap endearingly so that obviously means something. And the art is well of course lovely. To be expected between you two. That realistic feel I only get from the two of you."
She then went on to read it, laughing at quite a few times. When she finished she was smiling. "I like that. Superpowers aren't a new idea, however, the story is. I like the characters, they have an almost natural feel to them as you learn about them. There is an amazing underlying mystery to it all, and I just want to know more about the characters. I like how the reader is tossed in confused, and has to read more to keep learning. The use of other characters to show traits of the main ones, and the fact that while he seems somewhat stable, it's also apparent that Grim has slight mental issues to deal with. However I have more to read. So it depends on the other books and such."
Terrance was reading some of the other entries. One was a quirky, humorous comic that wasn't his usual cup of tea. Even so, he liked it quite a bit and he could see that creating it had been a labor of love for the three guys who had worked on it. Judging it warmly, he moved on to another entry.
"I didn't say only negative things, and they are within a certain reasoning," Tyson replied calmly, not shaken by Will's tone and instead grinning at his reaction. "The art is wonderful, which was your department right? so that's praise from me to you, my main tidbit is with the story really," he pointed out before looking at both Jordan and Luke. "The story is interesting and so are the characters yeah, but the problem is that this contest is based around only one issue of your comic, meaning that you have to show as much of the character as you can."
"Now, I'm interested in the characters but not from what they are but what they could become which is both good and bad," he explained thoroughly. "If you want to keep drawing this you can, the school does allow the members of the arts and design branch to make up their own comics or books for students and teachers to read, some are so good they get a proper publication, but from this one comic all I'm getting is hyped for what might come up rather than what is actually going on, if you get what I mean."
"Yeah, we understand," Luke nodded his head. He wasn't exactly mad with Tyson, he was chosen as a judge for a reason at least in his mind.
"Also," Tyson pointed out towards Will while giving him a cheerful smile. "Just because I'm an athlete doesn't mean I'm not smart, I have read multiple works of literature in all types of fields, stories interest me I just like to do sports a bit more," he simply shrugged before turning around and waving with the back of his hand. "Anyways, good luck, I'll keep you guys in mind."
After that he decided to check out Zima's table, mostly because he was curious what she had to offer in order to compete with Jordan's group. "Seems like you're having trouble in paradise huh?' Tyson chuckled as he walked over to Zima's and Robin's table. "If Robin's helping you out then I have a lot to be ready for don't I," he smiled at Robin before grabbing their comic, noting how colorful it was. "Seems interesting, what is it about?" he asked curiously before beginning to read the comic book.
Aphrodite in the meantime was checking out Jordan, Luke, and Will's comic. "Art is nice but well that's to be expected if you are in this competition. The story seems interesting, though I'm having trouble grasping the character. The main one. He's kind of cliche for the beginning, and so far I see nothing unique to his personality. It has potential but the first issue doesn't show that," she stated once she finished reading it.
```````````````````````
"Actually the story was Zima's idea and the characters as well. I just did most of the drawing," Robin explained.
"Anyways the story is about these two college students that have abilities. One knows how to control his to a point the other doesn't and has to learn. They actually met once before the start of the story and thus are connected. It's their journey of discovering themselves I guess you could say. Kind of hard to explain. Easier to read than to explain," Zima told him, playing with her braid nervously.
Neil walked into the room where one group was presently collecting frogs. "Are you guys... catching frogs?" asked Neil, not having been at the club when Jordan had announced the activities due to something he had to do for work.
"Yes. Mind helping. And Zane you have no right to complain since you don't have the courage to catch a single one. But hey if you want to be single for the rest of your life, so be it," Lucina taunted.
"How is me not catching a few frogs going to make me single for the rest of my life? Maybe I want to stay alone." He said with a shrug, not truly meaning this. He just wanted them to let him be. Glancing over at Neil quickly, he looked back over at Lucina.
"I think there's only five left," came Carla's voice as she walked towards the group. "I think they ended up going up the stairs to the third floor," she explained before turning to Anna, who had managed to catch another frog.
"See, we're almost done," she said towards Zane with a smirk.
Jordan and Luke didn't say anything, instead they noticed that Aphrodite's words matched pretty well with Tyson's own judgement of their work. Jordan had to admit that looking back at it they were most likely right, Will had made the art marvellous but the story they had set up for the first issue wasn't something that could win in a competition.
"Thanks for your words," Luke bowed his head politely.
"It means alot Aphrodite," Jordan replied and smiled at his senior.
Tyson looked at Robin and Zima for a moment before he started to shift through the pages of the comic book, reading almost as fast as he had with Jordan's and Luke's comic but stopping every once in a while to give a sort of smile, maybe even reread some parts, he didn't give out much emotion beyond that though. "I like it, the story is very simple, not too complex really, but the art is amazing as expected of you two obviously,' he said while pointing at both Robin and Zima with the book. "Again the story is pretty basic but the characters are able to carry it through, I think they're pretty enjoyable."
Terrance eventually joined Aprhodite. He had been far less vocal with his judgments than either her or Tyson, but that didn't mean that he hadn't weighed their respective merits carefully. He had taken his time with each comic, diligently absorbing all he could about the entries. "A lot of good work. I admit that I am impressed." He said quietly, not wanting to be overheard.
