I have a few relating to Bede:
- His family’s from unova, since he initially uses unovan pokemon only besides the hattena he was given. Also his theme has the PWT theme embedded into it.
- The mawile he uses is directly passed down from Opal. Since he had no fairy types initially, she gave him one of her own to help him transition.
- On a side note, I love how he immediately catches another dual psychic/fairy type and ends up keeping half of his original team. My headcanon here is he actually trained and fully evolved all his original team in secret, and still has them, but can only use his fairy mons in gym battles. Him having a pure fairy type in sylveon shows him fully embracing the fairy type as well, along with his new identity in a way.
- His family was actually rich before he got orphaned. He tries to dress rich in an effort to relive his old lifestyle. Someone pointed this out on YouTube, but his hair resembles a powdered wig and the colour purple has strong ties to the theme of royalty.
- He uses psychic types for multiple reasons. They have a strong motif of being ‘special’ and ‘extraordinary’ and I think Bede himself wants to be seen in a similar manner. That’s why he loves flaunting his connection to rose, and dresses up like royalty and all, because it feeds into this narrative. Psychic types were also OP back in the day, the ‘kings’ of gen 1 you could say.The type was also given with ‘royal’ and legendary status, which is why Lugia is part psychic iirc. Lastly, seeing how much popularity and attention gym leaders (people specialising in one type) are in Galar, he figures that by emulating some of these traits, he can replicate some of their successes and fame. He’s a very lonely character, and attention/validation is all he really wants deep down.
Edit: Which is why ending up with Opal has changed him for the better. By dropping the psychic type, he’s symbolically moved past his obsession with royalty and power, becoming a better person in the process.
