I share some of the gripes everyone else have (fewer moves and Pokémon, no games in the Game Corner, etc.), but here are some nitpicky ones no one has mentioned yet:

- Why did they change the TM numbering??? Sure, not all TMs are the same, and even some returning TMs had a TM above 60 and thus would need to be re-numbered anyway, but easily like 20 TMs could've kept the TM number from older games. They could've even given some of the returning-since-Gen-1 TMs their old numbers easily, like having TM21 be Mega Drain or TM49 be Tri-Attack. This absolutely does not matter in any way, and yet it drives me nuts.

- Why no shortcut to Sky Dash (Fly)? You either have to go through "Play with Partner" or through the Bag to get to the Town Map. The Town Map, at least, should've been a main menu icon (on the level of Party/Bag) instead of an item. Also, the Town Map could've been mapped (lol) to Y or something so that you can quickly use Sky Dash. They kept Alola's lack of HMs (which is undoubtedly a good thing), but when replacing Poké Ride with Secret Techniques they forgot this one very convenient detail.

Wha? Like, they said the store didn't have any, even with customers playing and winning tokens, or they just said the whole building was out of tokens?
Yes, the exact thing the guy behind the desk says is "We've run out of game coins. Also, please don't touch the walls in the Game Corner without permission."

I don't like the Box being in the bag, since for me, that goes against Pokemon , because its harder to develop a bond with a Pokemon in you swap them in and out constantly because the others need leveling as well (Aside from 1 other Pokemon in my party, i didn't care that the rest was going down).

Isn't that just as possible with the PC in the Pokemon Center, though? Choosing to switch to a Pokemon to level it up is a matter of playstyle.

Here’s another thing I just discovered. Unfortunately this is a trend that will continue thanks to Europe’s ratings for gambling, but I hate that you can’t play ANYTHING at the Celadon Game Corner. Not even simple minigames ala Pokemon-amie. I honestly hate the fact that we can’t even have a Game Corner anymore. In ORAS they made it so it was closed, but here they just made it so you couldn’t play anything since it is still the location of the Team Rocket hideout. The excuse was they were out of game tokens.
Does Game Freak seriously think that arcade games are the same as gambling, or does the EU hold that view? Because there was no excuse to not give us mini games. They should have at least ported some of the existing mini-games like Pikachu's Beach into the games just so we have more content. Instead, they opt to transform what could have been a mini-game hub into a place with nothing but flavor text referencing older games. They might as well have just removed that building entirely and put the Team Rocket poster somewhere else.

Just stop teasing things that you have no intention of putting in the your games, Game Freak! It's insulting to some of us.

I'm wondering what Game Freak has against mini-games and side-activities, because it seems like they stop putting in effort lately in fear that their effort is ultimately a waste of time for their fans (which it isn't).

It doesn't make sense because they also made it into an arcade??? Why not just let us play then?

I'm overall not bothered by their decisions too remove certain game mechanics since this game is sort of an offshoot of the main series, but removing Abilities while keeping Mega Evolutions is really odd. A-lot of Megas are basically defined by their new abilities, and stripping that away makes them feel naked. What's the point of Mega Kangaskhan without Parental Bond? Where does Mega Pinsir get its Flying STAB from? Dark Pulse on Blastoise is nice for coverage I guess, but the only reason why it can learn it at all (and Aura Sphere and Dragon Pulse) is for Mega Launcher. Mega Venusaur without that added Fire/Ice resistance is kind of depressing, considering how much of a game changer that was for it. etc.

That 100 BST boost is nothing to scoff at when there is no item penalty. The main reason Megas are in is that they're "cool".

Here's Smogon's viability list for the OU LGPE metagame. It contains 9 out of 13 Mega Evolutions (Mewtwo's are banned), so only Kangaskhan, Pinsir, Pidgeot and Beedrill are missing. It's the luck of the draw, I guess.

The item penalty isn’t really absent since Megas still cannot hold items (along with every other LGPE Pokémon).

That means it's effectively absent. If there is no item to begin with, then there is no penalty. They don't lose anything by Mega Evolving, so if abilities were still in, they'd be broken.

-I didn't mind Abilities being gone (being able to Earthquake and Dig Weezing and Gengar was a godsend with no Psychic coverage) but no Held Items seemed pretty pointless. I don't see why they couldn't have been there, even if it was as simple as the Incenses or Miracle Seed Boosting type items.

-Being forced to catch 50 Pokemon as one of the Gym Requirements. Most of the game's Requirements didn't bother me, but as a game that was meant to be based on GO, it made very little effort to persuade the player to go catch Pokemon beyond what you wanted for your team and a select few trades. On that note, I barely caught anything until that point and had to go find 20 or 30 some odd mons that I hadn't caught already and it just slowed me down immensely. Yes, you could say that's my own fault for not catching more Pokemon but again, other than grinding a couple times, catching was not high on my priority list and the game doesn't do much for me to think it should be~

-This is my own personal pet peeve but I hated the Gamblers. They're very cheekily placed on routes at much higher levels than your own Pokemon so they can spam OHKO moves without the condition that they'd ever be a guarenteed fail AND that's the only moves they know so you're pretty much forced to just pray they miss until you can kill them. THAT was annoying, there was not a single Gambler I got though without losing 1-2 Pokemon (in LGE; in LGP I was more prepared for them or just got lucky and they missed more often). It was just obnoxious to constantly get halfway through a route and then have to run all the way back to a Pokemon Center with NO BIKE and then back to the route again because of OHKO spam that I couldn't do anything about.

That's all I got off the top of my head~

The fact you can't fly on Pidgeot, Fearow, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, or surf on Blastoise, Dewgong, Dragonair, Seaking, Cloyster, Kingler, Vaporeon, Golduck, Slowbro, Kabutops and Starmie (despite the latter being able to float on land). Enough said.

I can understand the omissions of Pidgeot and Fearow due to their being relatively light, but I agree about the rest. You could probably add a lot of Water types following this.

I think there's a general worldwide trend towards cracking down on gambling in gaming, not just in the EU. Australia is thinking about it, and I dont doubt other places are too. GFs legal team probably advised them about it.

That said, just closing them is so lazy, and creates dead content. The old casinos should be renovated into something new.

I kinda hate the fact that they replaced EVs with AVs and candies. I’m lazy and would like for my Pokémon to get naturally stronger in their stats through battling so that I don’t have to find one specific Pokémon that gives a specific candy and catch combo the sh** out of it. Higher stat ceilings and no limits on stat buffing are still cool though.

Capture controls. At first I really liked them, but then I found the more I used them, and the harder the Pokemon got to catch, the more inconsistent my throws were even though I was throwing the same way as before. For example, I throw the same exact way when the Pokemon is in the same position twice, and the ball goes in a different direction on each throw.

And I agree with some of the fly and surf Pokemon. Like, Dewgong is 5'7'' (1.7 meters) and 264.6 pounds (120 kg). If your trainer is a 10 year old kid, there is no way a Dewgong can not carry them on their back as you swim. Why did they feel the need to size Dewgong down so much in this game? I remember catching one and Immediately setting it to walk behind me to try to surf with it and I told my roommate that I was confused because I could have swore Dewgong was a bigger Pokemon.

Everything is fine, except for the one thing I didn't think would pretty much tank my whole interest in the game -

The fact that they've replaced battling for experience with catching for experience. I absolutely hate it and find it removes all fun from grinding. It doesn't feel satisfying to throw a ball with this weird and inprecise capture system. My Pokemon should be getting experience through growing and battling, not through me having to chain catch a billion Pidgey or whatever.

I enjoy the grind and battles in JRPGs, and when you remove them... you just have an empty shell. Grinding has become such a chore for me, something I have to force myself to do because most of the time, my playstyle is to catch only the Pokemon I need for my party and then ignore everything else. Now I have to go out of my way to catch things. It just doesn't fit with the way I play Pokemon.

I'm going to try to get through LGP at some point, but it'll probably sit there for a while as I'm distracted by Smash. After that? I probably won't touch it again and will instead use FRLG or Virtual Console Yellow if I really want to go through Gen I again.

I think an even bigger criticism of the "catch combo" mechanic is that it devalues the actual Pokemon. Each one isn't individually important, ur not building bonds--you're just accruing a faceless horde.

I feel like it even has ethical implications. Like isn't this basically an endorsement of overhunting of wild creatures? I question the effects this irresponsible practise is having on Kanto's ecosystem. In 10 years Kanto is gonna be as barren as Orre, mark my words.

1. No abilities
2. They couldn’t even be bothered to include cross gen evolutions for the Kanto pokemon. But you can include Alolan forms. And you mean to tell me it was that hard to include Johto as a post game reward?
3. The Kanto eeveelutions can’t learn the special moves that your partner eevee can. Can you imagine how beneficial moves like sizzly slide can be for poor Flareon?
4. Don’t even get me started on the fact that trainer battles don’t generate much exp points as catching Pokémon. Thus making level grinding a pain in the ass. Or and speaking of catching.
5. The catching mechanics in this game are the absolute fucking worse since it’s like Go. It really brought back memories of the safari zone since Pokémon can run away at any given moment, including shinies. Hopefully this will be the last time go’s mechanics ever appear in a mainline Pokémon game because this was really infuriating.
