Staraptor.

Why? Because it's got awesome Attack and Speed, learns awesome attacks (Close Combat, Brave Bird) and looks cool, especially shiny 'Raptors.

I'd pick Swellow, but it's rare and doesen't learn Brave Bird. I DO have a badass moveset figured out for Swellow though - once I get Platinum. :3

I have a fondness for Starly. It's fast and tough as nails, and it's a powerhouse when it evolves. As a Staraptor, its Close Combat lets it face opponents that would overpower it otherwise; i.e., Ice, Steel, and Rock Pokemon.

It's hard to determine exactly what "common" does or doesn't include. Some that I like that may be considered common and including their evolutions are Pidgey, Sentret, Sandshrew, Caterpie...
