Music What songs have great lyrics?

Numb Little Bug - Em Beihold

Do you ever get a little bit tired of life
Like you're not really happy but you don't wanna die
Like you're hanging by a thread but you gotta survive
'Cause you gotta survive
Like your body's in the room but you're not really there
Like you have empathy inside but you don't really care
Like you're fresh outta love but it's been in the air
Am I past repair
A little bit tired of tryin' to care when I don't
A little bit tired of quick repairs to cope
A little bit tired of sinkin'
There's water in my boat
I'm barely breathin'
Tryna stay afloat
So I got these quick repairs to cope
Guess I'm just broken and broke

hair by lady gaga
"i just wanna be free
i just wanna be me
and i want lots of friends that invite me to their parties
don't wanna change and I don't wanna be ashamed
I'm the spirit of my hair
it's all the glory that i bare"

"Weird" Al Yankovic's "Amish Paradise".

Think you're really righteous?
Think you're pure in heart?
Well, I know I'm a million times as humble as thou art
Gotta like the irony in this particular part. But I have to say that all Al Yankovic parodies have fun lyrics.

Gatherers - twelve omaha solemn certainty

Television singing the sirens of the EBS
In the daylight horror
Pleads with you that this is not a test

"Join your friends, your family, your God"
The neighbors lay in circles of your lawn

You boarded up the windows of your house
And you steadied the shotgun in your mouth
There is no one here to talk you down
So you sat across the wall and start to count

it's one thing to appeal directly to me and write a post-hardcore song about Local58 of all things. it's another entirely to make that song absolutely heart-rending.

I have recently particularly liked some parts of Ignite by Casey Lee Williams, from the RWBY soundtrack. Not the ones about beating people up*, but the rest of the vibe:

"Yet every misshapen spark
Suffers the judgment and pain
But just as light conquers dark
There's a beauty that's greater
Than pure symmetry can contain
So let's start the game!"

"Ache and yearn (ache and yearn)
Can't wait for the pages to turn
Play both sides (play both sides)
When truth you cannot recognize
And any remarkable heart
Has gone through the hardship and shame
That's born of standing apart
From the easily processed
The uniform army of "same"
And that's just so lame!"

.
*ok I may also like this one just a little bit:

"Messing with my family
Means that soon you're history
The moments of your life are fleeting"

my ordinary life by the living tombstones. THE song encapsulating the adverse effects of fame as well as soul-crushing existential dread.
here are a few lines that stuck out to me:
  • "they tell me they're below me, i act like i'm above"
  • "when you become untouchable, you're unable to touch"
  • "touch me, midas, make me part of your design" (at the beginning of the song it's cocky, meant to sound like they think they're so cool they should be made out of gold, but at the end it's literally suicidal idealization because if they turn to gold they will no longer be alive

natalie wood by tv girl

"and every cop in town was her audience that night, they'd come from all around, they heard she was famous. but you'd never know, except her hair was perfect, and everyone kind of felt like movie stars and they went home so impressed."

"there's a world of difference between acing the audition, and doing whatever it takes to win the part. and all those other girls, well, they just had to listen. they knew it took more than kissing if you wanna break somebody's heart"

"doesn't matter who they're pointing at, cause the cameras always shine on you. 15 when you cut your pigtail, washed up at 22."

I just listened by chance to a part from Adele's Set Fire To The Rain and it moved me in ways it has not before, it just reasonates with some of my recent developments...

"But there's a side to you
That I never knew, never knew
All the things you'd say
They were never true, never true
And the games you'd play
You would always win, always win

But I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!"

Sorry for the double post but amazing by ed Sheeran also (from the same album) has great lyrics! It’s quite sad if you really listen to it, but I think it’s really good! (and the delivery and melody of the song makes it better)

“I'm tryin' to think, at the same time, tryin' to say somethin'
Can't switch off my brain, so don't meditate”
”Yeah, I'm tryna feel amazin'
Yeah, but I can't get out of my way and
Yeah, wish I could feel amazin'
But this is all that I can feel today”
“I wish I was a strong boy, head in the sand
If I were them, I would be the man”

lyrics from genius

also this verse from the song plastic bag (also by ed Sheeran, also really good)

“And I'll stay steady, balance on the rope
I guess that I'm not ready to rely on the hope
I'm burnin' days till the weekends
And starts, I just pretend I'm not where I am
Should I cancel my plans?”

especially the first two lines, it’s really sad if you think about it and with the beat it just hits so hard…

In the “Favorite part of a song” thread, I had mentioned “Make Your Own Kind of Music”. I think the lyrics are great in that song because they are so timeless. The song was from over half a century ago, and I still feel uplifted by the lyrics of the song.

I really like the lyrics of Isn't It "A" by PinocchioP, I think it relates a lot to how people are so divided in their opinions that they can't or won't see the other side no matter what. Like everyone is so focused on differences that they won't even try to understand each other, even if they actually have way more in common.

"Isn’t it A? No, isn’t it B?
Isn’t it tragiC that we can’t understand each other?
You say "Take it easy, just take it easy"
Don’t try to play God with me"

"Isn’t it A? No, isn’t it B?
No C, No D, we’re just hurting Each other
What is right to you
Is so suffocating to me"

"An ambiguous peace sign, an ambiguous dislike
We're a lot alike, but we're fighting each other
A peace sign without love, a dislike derived from love
We were looking at the same world with uneven shapes of love"

Ok so like I’m back with a Swiftie mind hehehe
<— knows at least half of her catalogue by heart
Also a bit of hunger games spoilers in there
I love love love mirrorball (such a lisia (the character, at least in my verse) song lol)

“I want you to know
I'm a mirrorball
I can change everything about me to fit in
You are not like the regulars
The masquerade revelers
Drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten” (in the context of my verse “you” is May ^^)

I love this line in invisible string cause of the reference
“Bad was the blood of the song in the cab
On your first trip to LA” (hehe… cause she has another song called bad blood… get it?)

inhales THE GREAT WAR OMG THE HUNGER GAMES/EVERLARK SONG OF ALL TIME OH MY GOD THIS IS SO AKSHSKSKJSSKALAL
“You drew up some good faith treaties
I drew curtains closed, drank my poison all alone
You said I have to trust more freely
But diesel is desire, you were playin' with fire
And maybe it's the past that's talkin'
Screamin' from the crypt
Tellin' me to punish you for things you never did
So I justified it

All that bloodshed, crimson clover
Uh-huh, the bombs were close and
My hand was the one you reached for
All throughout the Great War
Always remember
Uh-huh, the burning embers
I vowed not to fight anymore
If we survived the Great War”
(What I think is the most hunger games part of the song, but all of it is and it’s so good)

This line in particular:
“Tellin' me to punish you for things you never did” I GASPED WHEN I HEARD THIS LIKE OH MY GOD IYKYK OH ARCEUS PEETA

Safe and sound is another song i love for the same reason (but this one was actually written for the hunger games)
I legit gasped out loud when I heard this line:
“Hold onto this lullaby even when the music's gone, gone” OMG RUEEEEE YOU DIDNT DESERVE TO DIE

Ok enough with the hunger games now we have vigilante shit

spoken Draw the cat eye, sharp enough to kill a man
cool bass beat singing
You did some bad things, but I'm the worst of theeeeem
Sometimes I wonder which one will be your last liiieeee
They say looks can kill
and I might tryyyyy
I don't dress for women cool bass beat
I don't dress for men more cool bass beat
Lately I've been dressing for revenge”
(This entire song is so good but this is one of the best parts in terms of lyrics. Ft me trying to recreate the exact song with just words lol)

And and and DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS I COULD AND WILL SCREAM THIS BRIDGE
“My heart, my hips, my body, my love
Trying to find a part of me that you didn't touch
Gave up on me like I was a bad drug
Now I'm searching for signs in a haunted club
Our songs, our films, united we stand
Our country, guess it was a lawless land
Quiet my fears with the touch of your hand
Paper cut stings from our paper thin plans
My time, my wine, my spirit, my trust
Trying to find a part of me you didn't take up
Gave you too much but it wasn't enough
But I'll be all right, it's just a thousand cuts”

drops the entirety of the archer, says three words: “Katniss hunger games”
“All the king's horses, all the king's men
Couldn't put me together again
'Cause all of my enemies started out friends
Help me hold onto you” (ok maybe not all of it BUT AKDJLSKAAKA T-T IM GONNA CRY OMG

and mastermind is great too
What if I told you none of it was accidental?
And the first night that you saw me
I knew I wanted your body
I laid the groundwork, and then
Just like clockwork
The dominoes cascaded in a line
What if I told you I'm a mastermind?
And now you're mine
It was all my design
'Cause I'm a mastermind

[Bridge]
No one wanted to play with me as a little kid
So I've been scheming like a criminal ever since
To make them love me and make it seem effortless

This is the first time I've felt the need to confess
And I swear
I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian
'Cause I care” (ignore the links, I got this from genius lyrics)

Prolly gonna stop there, I could go on a lot more

The ending to Neru's "jailbreak" is an all time classic in my eye.

A young adult who made their own plane to escape their unnatural walled in city has their plane erupt into flames as reminisce that they managed to finally escape. Even if only for a few fleeting seconds. It's such a a potent tragic, yet poignant ending that sticks out in my mind to this day.

With the engine ever-heating and whatever happened to the plane.
How great is the sky reached all the while to a nonchalant degree.
Even if my body were to be blown away somewhere.
I think all of this is already good enough.

oh I’m back to drop ”the lakes” by Taylor swift

“Is it romantic how all my elegies eulogize me?
I'm not cut out for all these cynical clones
These hunters with cell phones?”

“Take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die
I don't belong, and my beloved, neither do you
Those Windermere peaks look like a perfect place to cry
I'm setting off, but not without my muse”

“I want auroras and sad prose
I want to watch wisteria grow right over my bare feet”

“A red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground
With no one around to tweet it
While I bathe in cliffside pools
With my calamitous love and insurmountable grief”

I absolutely love Panic at the Disco - House of Memories for the lyrics.

If you're a lover, you should know
The lonely moments just get lonelier
The longer you're in love than if you were alone
Memories turn into daydreams, become a taboo
I don't want to be afraid
The deeper that I go
It takes my breath away
Soft hearts, electric souls
Heart to heart and eyes to eyes
Is this taboo?
Baby, we built this house on memories
Take my picture now, shake it 'til you see it
And when your fantasies become your legacy
Promise me a place in your house of memories
Classic song

Excuse the double post-
Have an entire fking paragraph :)

“Chrysalis” by Young Medicine song
It’s the new song I keep talking about, it came out like 2-3 days ago

[Pre-Chorus]
There's no way to cope with this
I’m hoping I don't explode, this can't be happening

[Chorus]
I don't think I'm ready for this
Can I put it off? I'm counting
Hour by hour gone
Couldn't stop myself from breaking
Worst of all I can't replace the
Hours, the hours lost

[Post-Chorus]
Stay with me tonight
Please don't leave me behind

Basically sounds like they want someone to stay, maybe it’s someone who can’t move on after a death?

“Everything is Perfect” also by Young Medicine
This is also new, this, Chrysalis and two unreleased songs (at the end of everything & parasocial) are the only new songs in an album which is basically songs from previous singles-
Anyways

[Chorus]
No, I can't be the only one
Feeling lost, with nowhere to run
In the dark, reaching for a purpose
Hold me close, tell me I’m not worthless
Every night, it's a loaded gun
Pull the plug, on what I’ve become
Bleeding out, maybe I deserve it
Hold me close, tell me everything is perfect

[Post-Chorus]
It’s a curse, that I can’t outrun
Cut the cord, and I come undone
Take a look, can't you see I'm hurting
‘Cause inside, of my mind, I'm burning

[Bridge]
Every night, it's a loaded gun
Pull the plug, on what I’ve become
Bleeding out, maybe I deserve it
Hold me close, tell me everything is perfect

[Verse 3]
Am I real? Will I bleed? Was it worth it?
Hold me close, tell me everything is perfect

Just straight up suicidal themes
