Actually, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon came first.Consider that back in Hoenn, there was a type of NPC trainer called a "Pokemon Ranger". That became a spin-off.
Then Spike Chunsoft volunteered to do a Pokemon crossover with their roguelike engine: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
Maybe a crossover with Monster Hunter, too? Take the mechanics of MonHun, use it to hunt Pokémon, and we have Pokémon Hunter
Well, no way would they extend the same lenience to their flagship kid-friendly IPs....That's the game I would want, given Nintendo's lenient allowance on violent games.

Mature themes in a Pokémon game could work, but knowing TPCi, it would at most get a Teen rating. Someone could pull it off, sure, but there's a good chance it will end up being the Pokémon equivalent of Shadow the Hedgehog (the game).^ I think the "if handled correctly" is the difficult part. I can't imagine any self-respecting developer who wants to remain in TPCi's good books would develop anything either bloody or even involve too much swearing. Pokemon does have an image to maintain and any developer that would try to tarnish that by including anything that's too graphic would also leave a smear on The Pokemon Company's name. That wouldn't go over well with them.
That said though, I wouldn't mind an overall more darker Pokemon game! Pokemon Colosseum/XD did a fantastic job of what is basically mind controlling Pokemon which is something I've really wanted in another Pokemon spinoff.
