What’s a very underrated Pokémon character that you like?

Mine is Trace ( he‘s so nice but everyone really hates him )
I liked Trace too; I know LGPE wasn't terribly popular, and I'm sure that's part of the reason why, but I really believe he's overlooked when it comes to rivals.

Characters I like that just don't get a lot of attention? Roxanne, Cail, Todd Snap, Lunick, and Leaf.
Roxanne feels forgotten about as far as Gym Leaders go; Cail was fairly plot-relevant in Colosseum but is languishing in obscurity; Todd isn't even too obscure, but still doesn't seem to be nearly anyone's favorite; Lunick was shoved to the side in favor of Solana; and Leaf, though I love her, continues to be very overshadowed in terms of popularity.

Character most people hate but I like? Not too sure. I think the general consensus on Blue is way more positive now, but I feel like I distinctly remember that not always being the case, at least among western fans.

Nate. Not the Nate from Black 2 and White 2. The one from Pokemon Battle Revolution. My actual favorite male protagonist design.

I'm pretty sure he has a 0% chance of appearing in anything ever again since he shares a name with a main series character and he's from one of the Genius Sonority games.

Ah, the Orre games. Doomed to forgotten obscurity and relegation to side series status, but honestly not that much different from games like Let’s Go and Legends today. If they had been released later I think they’d be classified as main series, but alas.

If any character in the series earns the title of “not underrated” it would probably be Miror B. He’s one of the few characters everyone remembers and for good reason. Personally, though I’d say Cipher Admin Venus deserves to be remembered just as much based on her design.

Ah, Venus. Easily a contender for gaudiest outfit in Pokemon. (Seriously, how is that gigantic golden moon behind her head not weighing her down?)

Valerie is a character people seem to really dislike, mostly due to her bug eyed design and such, but Idk, I think she looks elegant. That and her desire to be a Pokemon gives off massive trans vibes, so I appreciate her in that regard.

There's quite a couple. I quite like Valerie, but I don't see much love around, but I'm taking that as a consequence of how X/Y was received and is being remembered. Another one is Jasmine, who I feel gets remembered at times because she's cute but I don't feel if you go up to someone and ask their top 5 favourite Gym Leaders they go "Hell yeah, Jasmine!".

Kahili, too. I really like Kahili's design and her 'backstory' but I do acknowledge the way she kind of popped up without any referencing before that really does her no good.

There's some others but I don't really want to clog the entire thread so I just kept it with Gym Leaders/E4 for now. To be continued?

Roxie is one of my personal favorite Gym Leaders, honestly I'm surprised and not surprised that we don't have any songs in future games that was "made" by her and her band. Piers collaboration when?

While Orre was brought up and while the whole region can be considered underrated (or overrated due to how highly agreed how underrated it is), one admin from the Orre games is Lovrina. While she is annoying, she has a lot of story potential and yet they never delve into the admins that much, I strongly think she is younger than we were led to believe but we'll never know.

I am an avid fan of Pokémon characters in general, so there's bound to be several characters that I like that not many people do. Since I could go on and on all day, I'll restrict myself to one character per region.

Kanto: Trace
I'll be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of Trace for some time. But after a while, his willingness to take in Cubone with the resolve to avenge its deceased mother and how he brings it to his final team in the Champion fight really touched my heart. While he's always at the same places Blue was in the original, he sets himself apart as a character (being in shock at the Nugget Bridge after seeing Bill as a Pokémon, taking on Archer in Silph Co. with the player and holding off a Rocket Admin afterwards, etc. rather than being smug about his own strength as a Trainer).

Johto: Eusine
Yeah, he's not as underrated as some of the other characters here, but a lot of people see him, to an extent, as a character of comic relief. The dude is trying his hardest, and the fact that the player will inevitably succeed as the one to catch Suicune, this goes unnoticed. I am personally advocating for Pokémon Masters to give him a Suicune, despite Kris already having one (maybe his can be Shiny to match his friend Morty's Shiny Ho-Oh in that game). After all, characters like Zinnia and Leon obtained Legendaries in Masters they failed to obtain in the main series. Maybe this entry is more Masters-related, but even in the main games, people have overlooked Eusine quite a bit, and that's rather sad.

Hoenn: Joseph Stone
Steven's father, owns the Devon Corporation. The biggest reason he's underrated is likely due to how little one would encounter him in the main story of the games he's in, but he's quite interesting as a character if you're willing to go out of your way to find out more about him in-game. I like it when we get to see familial relationships in the games, such as Blue and Professor Oak, the Hoenn protag and Norman, Leon and Hop, Roark and Byron, Koga and Janine, Liza and Tate, Professor Magnolia and Sonia, Piers and Marnie, and the list goes on! But there are so many other relative characters that don't get a lot of attention like Daisy Oak, the DPPt player-not-picked's younger sister, parents and grandfather, and so on (many of those have used generic NPC models in their games, so that might have something to do with their obscurity). Joseph Stone is one such character in particular that I think is heavily underrated for this reason.

Sinnoh: Saturn
Of all the villainous team "admins," "commanders," and the like, Saturn has got to be my favourite of them all. Most players end up preferring Mars out of the Galactic Commanders, but Saturn is quite the interesting case. He loyally follows Cyrus like the other Commanders, but is not fully aware of what the full scope of his plan would entail for him and the rest of Team Galactic. I like to think Saturn is the first of the Pokémon villains in the main series games to be somewhat reformed in the end, as he realizes that "extremism is never the solution." I honestly believe that not enough people appreciate Saturn's development, though it's probably because Game Freak gave Mars and Jupiter more screentime.

Unova: Yancy
Yancy has a good design for a character who is well out of your way. And I know the "dating sim" connotations associated with her character (and Curtis' for that matter). But in all honesty, what I like about her design is that in her normal sprite, she appears to be incredibly timid, but when costumed up as a celebrity, all that changes. This dynamic really adds to the surprise factor for those who actually did these calls, and unfortunately is not as present in Curtis' sprites.

Kalos: Trevor
Kalos, wow! There are SO many characters from this region that I would also consider underrated, like Gurkinn, Ramos, Sina, Dexio, the Battle Chatelaine sisters, Siebold and the Team Flare Admins. But Trevor in particular is a character who's so present in the game, and yet so incredibly underappreciated. His rivalry with the player is quite different than the nature of most rivalries in the series, with him trying to complete the Kalos Pokédex(es) and most of his "battles" being comparing the number of Pokémon in said dex(es). And don't get me started on how much justice Pokémon Adventures did Trevor.

Alola: Molayne
I must confess: Molayne is one of the characters in Pokémon that I can really relate to. His familial relationship with Sophocles being caring, yet teasing at the same time. Just read his quotes (and Sophocles' for context) while he's shutting the system down to stop Sophocles from being electrocuted upon the player's incorrect response. But them in USUM, he shows how formidable he is as a battler as a member of the Elite 4. I just think he's an all-around great character, and I'm surprised he doesn't get a lot of attention from a lot of Pokémon fans.

Galar: Honey
The Dojo Matron in the Isle of Armor and Mustard's wife. She tends to get ignored despite the fact that she's on par with Mustard, being super skilled in combat (and not just in a Pokémon battle either lol). Her battle takes quite a lot of Watts to unlock, which I can understand that not all players would be motivated to collect that many. However, she surprisingly has a lot of story surrounding her, and if you're paying enough attention, you'll find that she gets a good amount of screentime to fully appreciate her character. She's certainly more than just a caretaker. I wish her son Hyde got more spotlight than being a tech-savvy boy. I'd say he's underrated too, but Game Freak could have given him more of a role in, say, the Isle of Armor's story.

Hisui: Sabi
I'm sure several people were entertained by Sabi upon encountering her, but I've found that several people I talked to forgot her existence completely, which is sad. She has a lot going for her, including an awesome triple team of Rhyperior, Magmortar and Electivire. With a carefree personality, and being so young, it's quite amazing that she managed to become a warden for Braviary (maybe it's because she's clairvoyant as she says or something).

Anyways, that's basically it for the main series characters. Naturally the spin-offs themselves are underrated, so all of the characters in them are effectively underrated. No need to single out a character in every single one. This post is long enough!

Too soon for Paldea? I'll just say Arven for now. He seems like the kind of character I'd be a fan of while other people ignore him to the best of their ability. It's a vibe. Idk, I'd be happy to be wrong when the game comes out. Thanks for the commitment to reading this lengthy post.

I'm a big fan of Jasmine, one of the few redeeming qualities of Johto. The fact that, unlike her fellow female Johto Gym Leaders, she doesn't throw a temper tantrum when she loses. I like her more meek and polite personality, and her design is simple but elegant. Really, she's one of the best things to come out of Johto.

I also like Maylene, who I find to be a rather underrated Fighting-type Gym Leader, especially compared to other Fighting-type specialists like Brawly and Bruno. Throw in her backstory of her father being a gambling addict, leaving her dirt poor, and you can really sympathize with her and why she'll chow down when given the chance. I also like her design, as, like Jasmine, it's simple but gets the job done (and, again, it reflects her poverty status). Plus she gets the strongest team in the Battleground in Platinum compared to the other Gym Leaders. I was glad the anime gave her a little arc, which, in turn, helped get Dawn out of her funk as well. She also got some good spotlight time in the Adventures manga, furthering my preference for the DPPt segments of the manga.

ORAS made me love Courtney. I don't know why but something about her just clicks with me. I love her design, her odd mannerisms give me a good chuckle (and it makes me wonder why she's like that, along with making me realize I may like kinky girls), the little animated short involving her stalling Brendan and his Sceptile made me love her more, and I just overall find her fascinating. Bit of trivia, in a story series that I was planning ages ago but ultimately scrapped, Courtney would end up a permanent cast member and the main character, Geo's, new love interest after his trip through Hoenn after his failed relationship with a certain someone else (you can probably figure it out), as it would've made for an interesting Dating Catwoman scenario and allowed me a chance to create a backstory for her. But, yeah, Courtney really clicked with me for some reason.

In terms of male characters, I find Saturn of Team Galactic very underrated. Compared to Mars and Jupiter, who got a lot more screentime, he felt like he had the most potential out of all of them (considering he was the second-in-command, that's not hard to see why). But the fact that you only really deal with him twice in the games feels like something of a letdown, as there was so much more he could've done. I also came to love Toxicroak, which is his ace, only making me respect the guy more. It's a shame he got so little to do in the games. At least the anime gave him plenty of screentime, so that was a nice perk.

The sad thing about the Kalos gym leaders is that they have really good designs, and if they were fleshed out the way the Unova leaders were I think we’d be a lot more quick to appreciate them.

I’m also in agreement with @Dougbro1 on Trevor and personally would extend that to all the “rival buddies” of Kalos. It makes a lot more sense that starting trainers would travel together in a larger group and serve as a support system for one another so I was glad to see it fleshed out.
