What’s a very underrated Pokémon character that you like?

I'm back with more.
Kanto: From Kanto no one really comes to mind. Erika and Sabrina are quite popular (The former in Japan amazingly so, even), so my Kanto reps don't come from mainline games.

It's actually Candela, Spark and Blanche, the Team Leaders from Pokémon GO. Their designs are cool and beyond the petty wars of teams that the fans themselves made, they are surprisingly full of quirks and personality traits to bring them to life. On top of that, I like that there exists another equivalent of 'the chosen three' (2 protags + rival group, so to speak) that isn't the MC but still plays a big part and are full of skill, while also having a certain moral/value they represent, while also not being just a team leader that gives orders from behind a desk, but actually does a lot of physical work themselves while representing those values. I feel they get overlooked a lot purely because they are from Pokémon GO and Spark, for example, gets reduced to just surficial meme level where he gets portrayed as an overly sensitive child, but I would definitely not mind to see them back in mainline games or maybe even being just referenced.

Johto: I already mentioned Jasmine before, and adding to that, I think it's quite cool how she takes it upon herself to take care of a Pokémon important to the village and not being afraid to prioritize it over a Gym Battle. She's also not rude about it at all and is definitely a breath of fresh air compared to a more entitled and bratty Claire who sends you on a goose chase elsewhere over her own pride. On top of that, while she stutters, it's just part of her character opposed ot being played up as her primary character trait (Like how Leon has just 'getting lost' being beaten to death for no reason other than to try and be funny). She's just a girl who's a bit shy and happens to stutter because of it. On top of that she specializes in a kick-ass type (I'm a sucker for girls running seemingly non-girly stuff and rocking it like a Steelix for ace). And then there's also the bit where she appears in sinnoh and refuses to go home until she mastered Contests to show another side of her personality and I just think it's neat. Jasmine definitely deserves to get talked about more.

Other than that, I also quite like Karen. She may not be that overrated cause everyone and their mother overquotes her quote to hell and back, but I actually like Karen for the implications that can possibly come with it on a deeper level. She's the first Dark-type specialist, a type that is called 'evil' in Japan. Now, imagine this girl who has an affinity for night-based Pokémon (Since a lot, if not all, of her Pokémon either appear majorily during nighttime, or evolve through night-time phenomenon), and discovers a type called evil (Again in Japan). All the prejudice against the species and constantly being told it'd likely be better to walk away from it as result. But this girl has taken a liking to the typing and is determined to show the world different. So instead of doing what would be easy (Walking away and using a different type), she does what she wants and runs with teh Dark-types (Truly skillfull trainers win with their favourites, after all). Naturally there's a lot of sentimental headcanon mumbo-jumbo here, but Karen is a character I would not mind a deeper backstory on to explain her quote beyond just a surface-level cool quote. Considering her views on Pokémon and using a type called 'evil-type' in Japan certainly gives me a vibe that there's more to the quote than meets the eye.

Hoenn: I find Hoenn a bit hard cause I feel most characters get talked about quite a lot, but I do find myself liking ORAS Courtney. I think they gave her a good personality overhaul where her 'obsession' with Maxie fits well with her machine-like way of talking and behaving. On top of that she also was a scientist (If I remember correctly) which showcases she is likely smart enough to work on her own but still willingly choses to follow Maxie. I think with her behaviour and way of talking she sets herself apart and carves a memorable niche as she's the only one to do so. I also quite like Shelley but more so the original design. The pink hair color is really nice and I'm personally not a fan of the ORAS design. Unfortunately RSE doesn't have much there character-wise, so that's just it on that front.

Sinnoh: Marley. I find it a crime no one talks more about Marley. Especially cause Marley combines two primary traits of highly popular characters into one. Like Lillie, she doesn't like to see Pokémon hurt and like Marnie, she has the goth lolita aesthetic. On top of that, she doesn't talk much just because she doesn't want to, but she shows she doesn't because she doesn't want to hurt people with her words. On top of that, she takes an interest in Shaymin and even visits its slab in hope of meeting it one day. And she even outright says she likes battling (with) you despite not liking to see Pokémon hurt. For a character that's able to be missed due the way they need to be found, I find her full of personality and they did a great job with her.

Other than that, I also want to name Aaron. Everyone loves Guzma. Whenever Guzma gets named, people always say how cool they find it he uses Bugs, likely because of his own childhood. But Aaron was the first one to take the seemingly weak Bug-types so far that they managed to become an Elite Four member. When you fight him first he has a Dustox and Beautifly, which people wouldn't attribute as a 'strong' Pokémon (Or at least not E4 worthy), and yet here is Aaron. Rocking it like no one's business. I also like the gimmick of 'my ace is a bug but not a Bug-type' so the taem doesn't roll over and die over a Fire attack (Though some medium does attribute Vespiquen as his ace). He's just really neat.

Unova: Bet you thought I'd only end up saying female character, huh? This choice may be more popular than I think, but I'd actually say Alder. Whenever I see people talk about Champions I find people kind of... skipping over Alder? They name Iris, or sometimes even N, but Alder kind of gets skimmed over. His first entrance kicked ass, he's a wise man who makes Cheren think about what it means to be powerful and what you do next when you have it, purely because he lived the same way Cheren did and it resulted in the death of his partner Pokémon. On top of that, in BW2 we see him teaching young kids from the town, as well as his teams containing Pokémon his former E4 also used, showcasing he may appreciate them on a personal level (Which we know from Marshal, since Marshal was mentored by him too), and therefore has the same species as them as a tribute. Everything about Alder just clicks for me. He's not some weak old man who's wise and neither is he a strong old man that's stupid. He combines it all in one package to make for an interesting Champion that functions as a mentor that people can look up to (And on top of that, in BW2, he also runs a team that's half bug, so you could theoritically, attribute Alder as someone with an affinity for Bug Pokémon, the 'weakest' type).

Kalos: This is probably a bit of a weird one, but I'd actually say Lysandre here. I think Lysandre has a lot of interesting traits to him that could make him a really compelling guy. He's the descendant of the ancient King, he's rich and tech-savvy, he owns a café, but he's also a man who desires for the world's beauty to be cherished and remain as it is. He goes about it the complete wrong way, but if you throw all that together, Lysandre could have made for an interesting entrepeneur who in his giving back to the community learned this was not the way, and defaulted to more extreme manners to get there, despite knowing it's wrong. I think the beauty 'decaying' just to grow again could have also been a valuable lesson about how everything in life goes throuhg a rough patch or dies out, but that it will always get better or make way for something else to grow. Such is the circle of life and the balance of death and life. But instead he just gets hastily thrown under rubble and that's the end of that, and I really dislike that part, but it is what it is.

I can also vouch for Trevor as mentioned earlier, but also Shauna and Tierno. Yeah, they're maybe not the most exciting type of characters, but I found a friend group that travelled together, but all travelled for different motivations and who saw worth in totally different things was a cute take on things. One that also made a lot of sense considering the Pokémon world.

Also the aforementioned Valerie. She's a fashion designer, is from Johto (I believe?) and has an Eeveelution so she could have easily been a former Kimono Girl. On top of that she also used to be a model (Like Elesa and Nessa are nowadays) which is a part I also find a lot of people skimming over. I think those makings would have been interested to elaborate on and explore why she came to Kalos. In that aspect, she's definitely the Kalos Gym Leader who has the most to them, but it stays with 'tell don't show', unfortunately.

Alola: Kahili. As mentioned, she was the first Trial Champion but apparently went abroad. On top of that she's also a pro golfer and the daughter of a resort owner. Instead of just taking random Flying-types, her team is also nicely constructed with a sub-theme on the golf terms to give it a lot of personality. I personally would have liked it if she came back a bit earlier, and popped up here and there as some 'mentor' as you did the trial (Since she also was once a trial goer), and then reveal herself as the first Champion, but what can you do? I guess that abandoned trial site could have helped a bit, but no point in crying over lost milk. Not to mention Toucannon is a funny ace for her. Just imagine it launching a golf ball at high-speed just for her to yeet it away with her club. That's the good stuff.

Galar: I don't think I got anyone here. Leon is quite disliked in the West but he's the second most popular character in Japan. Nessa is also a top 15 popularity character in Japan, and we all know how she took the west by storm. I guess I would say Klara. We all know how she started out, up to the point she even cheated during your fight, but then actually betters herself and vows to train hard and work hard, despite first putting up a deceiving facade (Even photoshopped her league card). It shows a nice change from someone who expected things to just come to her natural (or by deception) to someone who realizes it takes hard work after (seemingly) seeing you put in the work too and getting rewarded for it.

I guess Sonia is quite popular too, but I have to mention her too. I think it was a really cool idea to have a character that's kind of stuck in life and has not the faintest idea what to do with it. While her childhood friend is the literal Champion adored by many. And her other friend is a popular model and Gym Leader. And her grandmother is a renowned professor. Sonia's story of trying to figure out what she wants and likes, and getting into her groove as the story goes on, was really cool and I feel it's not talked about enough. (Still wondering how she managed to do the Gym CHallenge and get to at least Opal without evolving Yamper though.)

If you made it so far, I'm so sorry for you. But thanks for reading. I guess?

  • Lorelei: Great design (specially in FRLG) and I like how its type speciality isn't as evident. Also, the fact that you likely haven't battled many Ice-types before you meet her makes her a real challenge.
  • Ethan/Gold: Great design with a nostalgic flair.
  • Wattson: I like his ORAS redesign and how he literally made his own city like a badass. He seems like a funny person, and loves dogs too!
  • Norman: Similarly to Lorelei, this franchise can make the most realistic characters the most badass. And I'm glad your only father in the main games has a positive relationship with you.
  • Juan: Communicates better the "Contest Master" vibe than Wallace (not sorry) and the Spanish name and inspiration also helps. He does need an unique ace though, maybe in Paldea...?
  • Glacia: Her ORAS redesign is superb and makes her look like a real queen of ice.
  • Noland: Scientific + Mechanic can make a great ace for the Battle Factory, and he is very fatherly.
  • Scott: One of the best feature guides we've had, if not the best. He's very charismatic and helpful.
  • Lucy: Seviper is a great Pokemon to base a character, and she completely rocks that aesthethic.
  • Aaron: Besides what was said before, he sports a very interesting design that looks youthful yet powerful.
  • Cilan/Chili/Cress: A very cool concept for a first gym leader, though I wish they had appeared more in the game.
  • Alexa: Thanks to the anime, but she's very welcoming to Kalos.
  • Drasna: Badass collar and very cool attitude.
  • Emma: Do I need to say it? It's a real shame she hasn't come back nor gotten a better design that has allowed her to become more iconic.
  • Xerosic: With his high IQ yet apparent sickness he'd have been a very interesting character to explore more.
  • Faba & Wicke: I love the Aether family to death, but most members are popular except their adopted uncles! Their designs are great as well as the way they bounce each other.
  • Melony: Frosmoth clothes, enough said.
  • Raihan: Cool design, personality and battle style. There's a lot of missing opportunities with his character, and he deserved a Sports Dragon or at least a Dragapult as his ace.
  • Oleana: She's more than the competent sidekick or the ultra-smart secretary, which makes her memorable. The game should have used her more.
  • Rose: The way he's written in the last part of the game is terrible, but how could I not love a brown skinned sugar daddy chubby businessman who uses a Copperajah?
  • Cyllene: Turning Cyrus into a woman was hilarious and unexpected. and the mystery as to whether she's evil or not keeps you engaged in the game. At the end, she compensates that lack of a twist with an intriguing personality.

Chatot from the Explorers games. I guess being a Mystery Dungeon character pretty much makes him underrated and underappreciated by default, but he's one of the most unintentionally comical characters I've ever seen, yet turns out to have a lot of depth nevertheless.

I want a remake of Explorers of Sky.

If X&Y had a better main story, Lysandre could've been an effective commentary on the problems with ecofascism/"lifeboat ethics" (though there's already the outrageously expensive entry fee into Team Flare to escape annihilation) or certain kinds of discourse on overpopulation.

It is kinda sad that people judge characters by their design outside of the player characters...

I would say Mira because she's very likable and has an amazing team but some people don't know her since her quest is optional in the games.

Yes it’s really sad that people don’t know that some characters are super nice but hate them because of how the characters look.

I am happy that I found someone that also likes Mira, she is really nice and wish that she wasn’t just optional because most people just forget about her :(.

The title is self explanatory, what is a underrated Pokémon character that you really like. Or a character that everyone hates but you like, or something along those lines.

Mine is Trace ( he‘s so nice but everyone really hates him )
Ruby (a resemblance to Brendan) from the Pokemon Adventures manga. As a child, he could kick a Salamence's ass with a Poochyena and Skitty, but he values cute appearances and winning Pokemon Contests above all else.

So, one character for me is Cameron. He's from Pokémon Ranger, so it's already getting pretty obscure here lol. Even so, he's generally underappreciated even in terms of what fans remain of the game. Probably not the most underrated and underappreciated character (I'd give that to Elita), but he's my personal favorite and it makes me sad to see how underrated he is :(. I'm not sure what other characters would be considered underrated for me though. If I remember some, I can always reply again later.

Anthea and Concordia.

Despite being tied up with N's story, I feel like they aren't talked about as much. Which is a shame because they possess the same mysterious aura around them as N. Even the games appear to seemingly neglect them, considering they only appear, like, once in both the paired games. I really wish we saw of them in the games/see more of them in the future.

I am probably not the biggest fan of them but Dexio and Sina are mad slept on.

They tend to be forgettable because their involvement in the story is usually left to be an afterthought, but after realizing what they've done, they are quite amazing.

These are two random trainers just like the player, but are often sent out on quests by Professor Sycamore. They've been able to accomplish a few crazy things.

For one they were sent by Sycamore to investigate Team Flare's actions and goals. Throughout their investigations, they found Pokémon tied to stones, which were draining their life energy. They both managed to free all of those Pokémon from the stones. They also managed to destroy a device that allowed for Lysandre to spy on Holo Caster users.

Actual people were sent over to help investigate the case of Team Flare and it turned out to work. Dexio and Sina disguised themselves throughout the investigation so I believe they were given the Honor of Kalos award in private.

In addition, Dexio and Sina were sent to Alola with a Zygarde Cube to dig into what's going on with Zygarde. Special enough right? But in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon they manage to actually catch a Zygarde and collect half of the cells in Alola! Just like that! We rarely have people in Pokémon obtain the equivalent of Uber tier legendary mascots, but Dexio and Sina technically did it! That's insane. They've accomplished more than any Champion or Gym Leader has (except you) in just two games with several afterthought appearances, and are probably continuing their journeys as we speak.

Quick Edit: sry your rivals will not involved in the freeing mons from stones. That was just Dexio and Sina!!
Edit 2 (October 10th 2023): I lied. Your rivals were. They were involved. It was briefly mentioned by Tierno following the climax of X and Y.

The other day I was thinking that if Ghetsis didn't get N to become the King, he would have probably done something similar and made them the Queens... And this would have been a nice what-if situation where the sisters (are they ?) would go after Reshiram and Zekrom respectively, developing a rivalry and re-enact the whole "two heroes fighting over ideal vs truth" story of old.

As for an underrated character of mine... I'd say Norman seems rather left behind despite being the first canonical father of the playable character.

I would say Morty. He is one of the more forgettable Gym Leaders, he has a repetitive team of the Gastly line... But as a character, he is nice and interesting. The only major young man figure in a town full of elders (even his gym trainers) that tend to the town's rich lore and the Kimono Girls as their likely successors. He has a friend (actually not from the town, who ends up leaving the town soon after) who is obsessed with Suicune and almost has a more major role than him in the event leading up to his challenge in his own town, who does much more of the action... While he is the aloof guy, he still cares and respects all this, but he is... Just there, supporting it all from the position he can. I find him relatable. I kinda want to support family and friends, care for them and be cared for, but I do not want the spotlght. Take it away from me. Please :)

i like hapu a lot! she wasn't someone i thought about too much until recently playing masters, but i suddenly came to the realisation that she's super cool and i enjoy her personality and character design a lot. she looks cute, is very cool, has a pretty cool team... i've just really come to like her! i never really see anyone talk about her (although she could be super popular for all i know), so i definitely think she deserves more love.

Aarune--the amount of thought put into his design and backstory is just so cool to me. He's a former Pokémon Ranger from Unova and is actually wearing a roughed up/modified version of the outfit worn by male BW Pokémon Rangers. Maining (well, soloing) one of my all-time favorite Pokemon, Flygon, is admittedly a big plus for me, too. He would have been such a good opportunity to include a Mega Flygon, aaaaaaaargh

Sina and Dexio--meeting Trainers who did the same thing the player is doing a few years earlier and are now working for the professor is a pretty cool idea on its own...but they're also superheroes?! So, so much potential. It's a shame the games didn't use them more.

Emma/Essentia--her story with Looker is incredibly sweet, and her Expansion Suit is incredibly cool. Seeing more of her superhero activity after the postgame story would have been amazing. (What is it with X and Y and underutilized superheroes?)

Ultra Recon Squad--we finally got some aliens who are human-equivalents instead of Pokémon. They're not fleshed out much, but that just makes them more intriguing to me. I wish we saw more of them and Ultra Megalopolis. Also, they're all lefties like I am!

Trace--as others have said in this thread, he's a really nice guy who doesn't deserve to be hated as much as he is. I also firmly maintain that he was a smart design decision given the premise of LGPE. Think about it: if the new players are going to MEET Red instead of BE Red, that means Blue isn't really an option for a rival. So, instead of attempting to copy-paste the OG "jerk rival", they made a character whose personality is 180 degree flip from Blue's. It makes all the sense in the world. In other words, if you hate Trace, your issue may actually be with the setup of LGPE, not Trace as a character.

Cail (from XD/Colosseum)--for some reason, his attitude just hits me the right way: snarky, but not so antagonistic to the player that he feels like a whole-grade jerk. And XD showed off his caring side by having him be the self-proclaimed gatekeeper of (his hometown?) Pyrite Town. His design is cool, too.

Silva (from XD/Colosseum)--even more obscure than Cail, this guy was the best friend to Duking, de facto mayor of Pyrite. Duking is letting Cipher have the run of the town even though he strongly opposes their beliefs about Pokémon. Silva doesn't understand why, so he does some digging and finds out Cipher is holding Duking's pet Pokémon hostage. Silva tries to rescue the Pokémon and gets beaten up. And, this being Orre, he didn't just lose the Pokémon battle, he physically got beaten up. Wes rescues him, and Duking's Pokémon. But despite what he just went through, Silva is still determined to help take down Cipher. He goes after them again and again, getting captured and/or beaten up multiple times. He just keeps going, at first for the sake of his best friend and then later for the greater good as well. I have SO much respect for this very minor character.

I recently found out about Pokémon Duel, a now long-defunct mobile game from around the XY/SM era. And that introduced me to an extremely obscure character I like a ridiculous amount: Number 7. I love, love, LOVE his design...but his story is also a gut-punch to me. He's...had a very messed-up life. Pokémon's not exactly a stranger to implying messed-up backstories, but his was shown to a degree of explicitness that I'm frankly shocked they were able to get away with under an E rating. He badly needs a hug. And a happy ending, which he can't get because his game ended prematurely. (At least I'm free to headcanon...)
There's a point near the end of the released story where Number 7--a scientist developing advanced AI--boasts about how superior his AIs are to untrustworthy, greedy humans. Another character (Carlo) points out that Number 7 himself is a human. I was fully expecting him to say something like "Oh, but I've cast off my inferior humanity for the way of the machine"...or something like that. Especially given he calls himself Number 7. Instead, though, he smiles and says:

"Sure I am, Carlo. That's why I'm going to rid the world of my existence. The world doesn't need people like me. The world has no place for such tragedy."

WHAT. THE. HECK. GAMEFREAK.

Ice from Pokemon Ranger. Hardly anyone cares about spin-off game characters and I've never seen anyone talk about him, so I figure he's underrated.
