What's the point in Goh trying to catch all the Pokémon to try to get Mew when Project Mew seems to be the way to get Mew

So what the point in Goh catching of trying catch every Pokémon to get to Mew which has been said in nearly every Journeys intro when Project Mew exist. Like what was the point of him throwing pokeball at random common Pokémon when he should be more focused on trying to get evolved Pokémon to fight Mew like he not exactly working from the bottom to all the way up when he capture Pokémon like Golurk, Flygon and Suicune so early on. He hasn't been shown study any of his Pokémon and he only really bonds, trains and uses a small handful of Pokémon. So what is Goh trying to catch them all when it kind of leads to nowhere for his goal for Mew.

His goal is to catch all Pokèmon, Mew is just one of the Pokèmon he needs to catch, so he's focusing on catching the ones easier ones to catch before moving on to the likes of Mew.

He simply thinks catching every Pokemon will somehow lead him to mew. Mew is his end goal, and completing his Pokedex is how he thinks it will happen.

So he basically using a baseless assumption.

With catching Pokémon like Golurk, Flygon and Suicune doesn't seem like he catching the easier one first. It also lead to the question of why should people care about the catch them all goal when it doesn't really lead to anywhere and is not really been a challenge.

Honestly, this would have made his goal of catching Mew significantly more interesting than just watching him catch everything and watching them become background NPC's. Seeing him build a team to fight Mew would have been a lot more interesting than just watching him catch Pokemon and never do anything with them.

If that's the case, why not have him just catch only Bug, Ghost, and Dark Types since those are super effective against Psychic.

It is a popular in-universe speculation that Mew has genes of all existing Pokemon. So simple logic tells to catch them all to use data from pokedex for researching nature of Mew.

Well... he's not wrong, since the experience of having caught everyone else will help him catch Mew.

While I can see Golurk and Suicune being hard to catch, Flygon doesn't strike me as a hard catch.

I think it's up to personal interpretation since the writers are really bad at communicating the details of Goh's goal. But I think what they intended is that Mew is the all-time hardest Pokemon to catch (and it makes sense they took that decision, since it's a popular mythical without evident god-like attributes), so Goh has to catch lots of Pokemon before catching it. Project Mew is more about Mew itself and its behavior.

In terms of Ash's goal, Project Mew is like obtaining the badges, while catching Pokemon is like battling other trainers and training your own Pokemon.

He's basically a researcher, by catching them, using them, and bonding with them he understand pokémon. If he understands all pokémon, he hopes to understand Mew itself, pokémon that carry the genes of every pokémon.

His reasoning still baffles me.

How catching all the Pokemon will make him understand Mew?
What does Gou think that will happen when he gets them all, Mew will appear to congratulate him or something....

That doesn't make any sense.

1. He won't catch all Pokemon. At this rate he will barely exceed 100, so at most he might end up with 151. He's only caught 16 Pokemon so far this year.
2. He initially didn't even want to catch Scorbunny due to his obsession with Mew, but then to rationalize his desire to have it as a partner, he claimed that catching all Pokemon would bring him closer to Mew. The logic might be questionable, but the point is that he enjoys catching regardless of Mew and you'd have to be very oblivious not to notice that.
3. Project Mew was hardly part of Go's plans. He initially rejected it because he wanted to find Mew by himself. Changing his mind is called character development, and Gary had a lot to do with that.
4. Just saying, but we still have little idea of how winning the PWC fits into Ash's Pokemon Master goal exactly. A champion is meant to defend their title for as long as possible, but it's obvious that Ash doesn't care about that. Imagine Leon losing to Ash only to realize that the latter doesn't even care about the title and was just proving a point about being superior to him. It happened with Drake and Brandon, after all.

As a kid (which he is) Goh doesn't need much reasoning. It's his dream and he sees this way to achieve it. As I said before, there is a simple logic: Mew can be any Pokemon, therefore it's needed to catch all those Pokemon to learn how Mew can behave and where it can hide.
And catching Pokemon is so exciting as well. ;)

Heck, what if one of those Pokemon WAS Mew using Transform?
