Why are Water Starters always the worst handled Starters in the Anime?

What I don't get is, why was Ash's Greninja meant to be the one to protect Zygarde? Wouldn't it make more sense for the Charizard that beat it to be the guardian? Honestly, Alain needed to lose in some way. He should have lost his Charizard so that way his arc could be over and stopped having a dumb phobia that never got resolved.

Water-type starters tend to be my fave starters, so it saddens me. Squirtle and Totodile were decent but still overshadowed by their Grass and Fire counterparts, Marshtomp was nothing but completely forgotten, Primarina didn’t do much, and Inteleon suffered from the most rushed evolution in series history.

Piplup was really the only exception, as Dawn’s answer to Pikachu. And Greninja for obvious “Shillmon” reasons. Oshawott was the attempt for a second Piplup, but worse executed. I hope Quaxly gets decent treatment come the next series.
