Will we ever have a mono-type trainer on the cast again?

Well, no. It did work for Misty because there were loads of Water-types throughout Kanto and Johto. But like others said, she did show interest in other types.

It's hard to stick to certain types and have a full team of them AND being interesting at the same time. If the certain type is rare, then it's probably better not to be mono-typed.

Where is this, Misty had a load of diversity in water types come from?

She only made one capture in all of Johto you know. Misty didn't get most of the Kanto and Johto water pokes. Ash got both starters and Kingler and Lapras.

2. A predominantly Psychic type pokemon...

But Psyduck is pure water type. Though it was weird that Psyduck had access to Psychic moves. I often wondered if Psyduck was meant to be a Water/Psychic type earlier in development.

I would only want a mono type trainer on the show if they show off the fact that just because a Pokémon is one type, doesn't mean they can have moves of their type. In the games, I love the fact that any Pokémon type can learn an attack that doesn't belong to their type. Like how Starmie can learn Thunderbolt, or how Tepig's line when it evolves is capable of learning a ton of moves that aren't Fire or Fighting. It can learn things like Scald, a water type or Earthquake a Ground Type move. Diverse Move pools rule.

"Will we ever have a mono-type trainer on the main cast again?"

Well, we really can't answer that question completely because the direction of the next series could very well be different from what is currently happening with the anime (i.e. Best Wishes).

Misty was the closest thing we ever had to a "mono-type" trainer on the main cast and her character was constructed on her affection towards one type of pokemon, but she still expressed a desire to catch pokemon of other types (such as Oddish and Jigglypuff). Furthermore, Misty also owned pokemon outside of that type. She wasn't a mono-type trainer, obviously.

Since we've never had a mono-type trainer featured on the main cast, the chance that there will be one is very slim. Nevertheless, anything is still possible in this anime.

I don't really think that a mono-type trainer in the main cast could work that well. While Pokemon types have more combinations and have more diverse movepools than they did back with the franchise started, I still think it would be difficult to make all of the Pokemon stand out, in terms of their personalities and their movepools, by a certain point. Aside from Togepi and Azuil, who I keep forgetting isn't a Water Pokemon, Misty only caught Water Pokemon, but the only Water Pokemon that really stood out was Psyduck, despite never using a Water type move in battle. It would be difficult to make a mono-type team stand out, especially compared to the other characters in the cast, like Ash, who would be catching different types of Pokemon. Besides that, I think that the writers are more interested in giving the characters different types of Pokemon so that they aren't tied down to using mainly one type of Pokemon for one character and that they have more of a chance to develop different movesets for their Pokemon.

I know. I call it that because he's predominantly using psychic-type moves.

Will we ever have a mono-type trainer on the cast again?

I don't think it will work anymore like it used to. It was fun up until a certain point. Then we got May who had different Pokemon and then Brock had started getting baby Pokemon, and of course there was Dawn, so I don't think it will be worth to do that anymore. I rather see different types of Pokemon of the same Pokemon species instead of just, water, fire and so fourth. But as far as having all dragon Pokemon, I would have liked someone on the show to have had a full party of dragon other than Clair had.

Do I think it will happen? No. What do I base that on? Gut feeling. I could talk about how Iris and Kasumi weren't true monotype trainers and yet DP showed that they could follow the way that people play the games if they wanted to but I'm sure that some one else could do a better job. I'm mainly posting this to point out the second point. The writers could write any type of trainer will if they wished to do so (IMO) however the question is in someways whether they would want to or not.

I'm want to say yes if the character him/herself was on a journey to get non-gym experiance while training to be a Gym Leader to take over a gym from one of his/her family member (or alternatively, a protege of whatever current Gym Leader He/She is planning to take over for). Outside of that, I'm not really sure.

I think there could be, and keep an interesting team at the same time. With all the duel typings, you could make really decent Dark, ground or steel teams. Just a few examples. You could get upto 7 types in one team and still specialize in the 1 type. The writers could make it happen, but somehow i dont think it will

I think the funniest part of it all is how Misty didn't even get a large chunk of the Kanto/Johto water pokemon.

- Ash got Squirtle/Totodile/Kingler/Lapras...so those pokemon and all their evolutions were off limits for her.

- Tracey had Marill, so she couldn't get one of her own.

- Seel/Dewgong was owned by her sisters, as well as Seaking.

- Water pokes such as Wooper/Quagsire, Magikarp, Suicune, Chinchou/Lantern, Mantine, etc. would also be skipped.

Perhaps if the writers showed Misty getting a wide variety of pokemon, instead of only getting a select few, it would be different. I believe this is why aside from Misty, they will never do it.

Well, let's not jump to conclusions by saying that they'll NEVER do it again. I'd just say that it's highly unlikely. With regard to how mono-type trainers are properly defined, Misty wasn't a pure mono-water type trainer (ex. togetic, azurill). Even though her team was predominantly water, she expressed the interest and desire to capture non-water types. But given the fact that she was indeed a passionate water pokemon trainer, that makes her the closest thing to a "mono-type" trainer.

Reason why it wasn't totally effective with Misty was because she had pokemon that were practically helpless on dry land (Goldeen, Horsea). Think about it. Most of the time, whenever Misty called on a pokemon to battle or assist her with something, it was one who could move around easily on land like: Politoed, Staryu, or Corsola. It's because the anime has hinted at the notion that amphibious water pokemon have a greater advantage over non-amphibious water pokemon by having greater mobility on dry land. And when I think about it, that's kinda dumb as it defeats the purpose of having pokeballs to keep pokemon in and to train them in habitats that are different than their native homelands.

Having mono-type trainers on the main cast was never really a staple. All we had was badge collectors. Coordinators were big after Misty and many thought that they would become the new staple but clearly they've ran their course. If they ever decide to do a mono-type trainer again on the main cast, (which I still think is very unlikely) then I think it would be more effective with a pokemon type with less limitations and more versatility. I think a normal type specialist would be ideal. That pokemon type is very flexible and they can learn a wide variety of different types of attacks.

I honestly wonder if Iris will get another dragon at all, as she isn't as obsessed with them like Misty was with water pokes. After all why isn't Iris going into huge rants like Misty did about water Pokemon every 30 eps?

I think a mono type trainer would have to be perfectly written and not a Mary sue.

I don't see why. Everyone in-universe and out knows overspecialisation in Pokémon leads to one's downfall.

They're just not useful in some situations, as mentioned above, like Misty's Goldeen.

Like i said before i still think one type trainer in cast could work again, and i dont think mono trainer would necessarily end up equals stale.

MIsty was probably closest we had so far as on type trainer ad many people liked that. They thought concept looked great on paper, and if writers gave her more battling screen time and expanded on story im sure opinion would be a whole lot different nowdays among people.

It depends on writers and how they will handle someone if his story will be interesting or not.You can have trainers with various type of pokemon in cast all you want, but that doesnt mean much if writers treat him poorly ending up wasted.Just look at poor Brock.

It doesnt matter if you have one or 15 different types, because with good writing you can be equally interesting no matter what you have.

Now that games evolved introducing huge variety of different techniques specific to each type over 5 generations situation would be a whole lot different if we had trainer specializing in one type in cast again.Several pokemon are paired up with different types so problem of variety could easily be solved by giving him more dual types opening access to different moveset which arent specific only for water, fire, flying etc.Take for example water, its paired up with almost any type except fire having wide specter of possibilities to choose from.Or Flying which was paired with almost everything but fighting type

Of course most types arent flexible and diverse enough to make some worthwhile and intriguing team out of it.But water for example is enough widespread, diverse and balanced to do some great story with characters having enough marketing value thanks to sheer number of existing options to choose from.
Sam for normal type or to smaller degree flying.Thy are paid with many different types from other specie increasing diversity and there could be made some great story arc out of it.

Having sidekick which focus on one specie of pokemon could be refreshing and intriguing to see in cast again, and it would be give us something new for a change. We always get trainers which use different types being similar to Ash in many aspects,so seeing in anime someone with different goals and motivations could give us something unique, fresh and endearing.

I believe Misty kinda proved back in original series how being one type trainer isnt handicap which stands in way of adequately promoting games. On contrary if type is very common ,character can have valuable marketing value, especially if he gets more dual types or<catch some different ones as long he stays faithful to his specialty. For example water trainer can catch ice or dragon types which have some characteristics specific for his specialty(like Dragonair)s its not like he is limited only for pure water type.Like people say even Misty wanted to to expand on it,expressing desire to catch some powerful dragon tyoe which lives in water and she had two pokemon which were of different type.

So its not like you can make very diverse team and enjoyable story with mono trainer if your creative.

Personally while i know it wont happen if writers ever introduce mono trainer again,i think Misty would be best candidate whose specialty is already one type not existing need to create new character for such role. She has fun, dynamic personality always bringing great chemistry within cast and there are things in her story are left unfinished on which writers could just pick up developing her more.Im sure many would be like to see her goal of water master advanced or seeing her doing tasks in trying to become E4,being more explored about her past, pokemon and unresolved issues.

I think the best possibility of it happening would be if the person was considering taking over the gym from their parents. Misty was already the gym leader so had to stick to water types where as someone who was only considering taking over the gym could catch one or two other type pokemon just in case they changed their mind.

Also I think the best typing would have to be Flying as their is so much variety. Taking just one region like Hoenn there was so much varity. Swellow, Pelliper, Altaria, Tropius, Skarmory and Xatu. That provides six extra types that are intersting and diverse.

Another example, using just Hoenn pokemon, would be if Max came back and wanted just Psychics he could have Ralts, Medicham, Natu, Spoink, Lunatone, Beldum. That's five extra typings to play around with and would work if Ash does go back to Hoenn to promote any remake or something he could have Max travel with him.

I don't think they will have a monotype trainer again but if they did an aim to become Gym Leader/E4 would have to be the way to go.
