Would you like a mixed type gym?

I have always thought it would be cool to have a gym that uses different types. it'd be more of a challenge as long as they dont reveal his or her pokemon

Gyms should move on and start focusing around different strategies (a weather one or two, Trick Room, Inverse, Doubles, Rotation, maybe a stall one, also a hax one with Serene Grace Togekiss Air Slash + Twave spam, Prankster Swagger spam).

The type representative angle has been done enough plus then Dark will never get a gym!. So I'm all for them approaching them differently it we're to keep on with gyms being the focus.

Well technically we've already had a few variations of a mixed type gym. In gen 4 a few gym leaders had to borrow Pokemon from other types. Plus in gen 5 the striaton gym had 3 types (albeit you only fought 1 (i liked how the anime handled it better))
And in gen 2 and gen 4, Gary runs the Viridian gym without a defined type, using instead a mixed team.

Yes, i want. I'm sick and tired of the monotypes Gym Leaders, makes pretty much every gym leader easy to sweep. Gym Leaders with a rain team, sun team, sandstorm team, trick room team and so forth will add a much needed challenge to the main series.

Never going to happen as long as Game Freak is obsessed with making the games as easy as possible for casuals, but yes, I would like to see gyms that have more complex themes and strategies.

Can't say I'd like the current setup gone, since it's useful enough as is, but Norzan makes great points. Of course, it might be harder to make teams based on those themes and that's why they stick to types.

I agree with this so much. I really liked how the Striaton Gym focused on a more conceptual strategy (type advantages) as opposed to the usual elemental rock-paper-scissors routine. I would love to see more of that, and with different battle styles, as you mentioned, too.

This is where I am. Dark should get a gym at some point (seriously :p), but yeah I think they should do a generation where it's all themes.

You can do weather (rain, sun, hail, storm), tactics (Baton Pass, stall, all out sweepers), different rulesets. Don't do Hax though, that would drive people up the effing wall :p

I think focusing on different stats would be cool too (an all-out speed team, all out physical attack etc) because you'd really have to prepare differently for something like that.

i think the only issue with using more competitive-themed teams is that they have a strong chance to become either too challenging or equally as boring. after all, since gym battles are singles and the AI doesn't switch, most of the themed teams wouldn't work or would require the AI to constantly waste a turn to set-up rain.

I like the idea of more strategy-based gym teams. While that technically doesn't have to do away with the type restrictions, I think it could be a viable option for the future.

Something that comes to mind are some boss teams from colosseum. Dakim specifically gave me trouble because of his strategy alone, not his Pokemon. He spammed protect and earthquake, I'm pretty sure every one of his Pokemon knew both moves save for his shadow entei. A gym with a clear strategy as simple as that could replace the standard "all out [TYPE]-attack GO!" That the others use.

That said, a shoutout to Elesa for being stuck with one type (and even two of the same Pokemon) and having a good strategy to go with it (volt switch).

This is a fair point, but I also feel like it wouldn't be too difficult to code the AI to set weather only if there isn't, and then lead with a starter (or a mon with drought for example). Then switch to a mon to sweep.

The AI is something that needs to improve anyway. I'm currently doing a mono-Water run in AS and the other day an NPC used Helping Hand three times in a row (in singles battles). It was dire. So if they can program a bit of a better AI then strategies rather than types would probably be a nice change - if only because you would go into it not knowing what (types) to expect so you can't really counter lead (unlike now, where if you're in a Fire gym then just lead with a Rock, Ground or Water type).

Added bonus for aesthetics people: Strategy-based Gyms would lead to more varied and creative Gym Leader designs. It is far easier to reflect an elemental affiliation through a character's appearance than it is to reflect their strategic decisions. But for an example, consider the Battle Chatelaines. A thing that I liked about them was how their hairstyles were indicative of the battle style that they specialized in, with Dana having three loose strands (for Triple Battles), Morgan having a spiral (for Rotation Battles), and so on.

You can still have a theme and be monotype. Lots of gyms have a strategy revolving around the tm they give out or at least they used to.

Say for the sake of example there was a rain team - they would be mostly water types anyway (with maybe a Weather Balling Roserade or Vanilluxe thrown in for good measure). I don't see why 'theme' necessarily has to replace 'type'. In fact if both are present that just makes for a deeper battle strategy.

Also i'd really love to see a different kinds of battle as themes (e.g. doubles, triples, rotation etc) which doesn't necessarily rule out 'type' either. You could even have a rain team triple battle where all or most pokemon involved are water types.

As for mixed-type gyms, well I'm torn. On the one hand there's the points i just made, but on the other the 'type' gyms are kinda really played out and predictable. There's no element of surprise because the game usually tells you before you enter the gym what type the gym specialises in.

I think it'd be interesting if, in Gen. 6, each Gym specialized in two types instead of one. This would lead to great opportunities to play up dual-types such as a Water/Psychic gym (The Slow family, Starmie) or a Bug/Grass gym (Parasect, Leavanny). The Elite Four would graduate to putting together the best team regardless of type.

I'm pretty much the same way. I really have no problem with type theme gyms, especially since I'm waiting for the day there is going to be a Dark-type gym.

Would be nice to have the best of both worlds since I read some great ideas here regarding AI strategy, but the familiarity of type theme gyms should be an element to that kind of role, as well. That, and having more than two to three Pokemon with different types of strategies, of course. That would help in creating a more challenging experience.

I say sure! Why not a gym based around a certain play style / strategy while having a mixture of Pokemon? We've had plenty of stereotyped style gyms; e.g. Koga's gym with status conditions but I'd like to see them deploy a wider variety of Pokemon sometimes.

Yeah, agreed on the general sentiment here. Gyms that focus on varying degrees strategy could offer so much more to gameplay than simple mono-type challenges.

That reminds me of Riley and friends from Sinnoh...I always liked the wide variety of Pokemon that they each brought to battles and tag battles. Seeing characters like them as Gym Leaders would be awesome.

Plenty of non-Water Pokemon work in rain though - more than just a random Weather Ball mon anyway.

Anything with Dry Skin (Jynx, Toxicroak, Heliolisk, Parasect - all aren't Water types), Flying types appreciate it for Hurricane (some of which aren't part Water), Electric types for Thunder, Beartic and Armaldo are non-Water types with Swift Swim, Goodra is a non-Water type with Hydration (Accelgor has it too, but probs way too frail to use it), and also any Steel, Grass, Ice and Bug types have their Fire weakness removed so generally appreciate it for that.
