Well, when it comes to love, everybody wants it to work out for them, and people generally have a deep fear of rejection. It often takes a lot of nerve to tell someone you're interested in them, and, when the feeling is mutual, there tends to be a lot of relief and elation.
Obviously, that wouldn't work for certain characters. If, say, a character similar to Vegeta (minus the Saiyan bloodlust) wanted to tell a girl he was "interested" in her, he'd probably do it non-chalantly, and brush off the rejection and go back to... whatever.
So, Sasuke from Naruto would go back to brooding.
